I will tell you that I am a first grade teacher in MA and one of the books from our last science program was Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. My students also love the "Click, Clack, Moo..." Series. I always suggest to my parents that are coming in to read to my class to choose a book with their child to share with his class. When they know this is one of (son's name)'s favorite book, they are more likely to be intrigued.
the "Little Old Lady" book mentioned early on. Kids participate (it is repetative) and it's very cute. We also totally love Robert Munsch books. "Something Good" is my all time favorite kids book. "Alligator Baby" is funny too.
As for being "too young".. I went in to read in my DDs 3rd grade class and was afraid everything was "too young". I pulled out a book and a bunch of them said, "Oh, I love that one!" and I read a few more. I kept asking them if they really wanted to hear these and they were thrilled. (They had a sub who was fine with me staying.) They kept asking what else I had and sat thrilled.
This reminded me of another of DS's favorites -- Bad Dog, Marley -- by John Grogan. (It's the same author who wrote Marley and Me, but Bad Dog, Marley is a picture book for children.)
