Help - Lost Gift Cards!!!

My brother sent us two gift cards for christmas both were $100 each ,
one for Foleys/Filenes and the other for ToysRUs.

But while my in-laws were over they were on the counter and must have gotten lost with all the open boxes and wrapping paper. I asked them they can find them and didn't take them.... I have a feeling they got mixed with the wrapping paper and got thrown out.

-- problem is I am pretty sure the receipt is with the gift cards...
-- my brother used his credit card... does any one know if there is any way
the stores can track it by his bank statment or credit card number to
reissue a new one....

OUCH! That's a big hurt, to lose $200 in GCs!

I'm afraid that many GCs have a stipulation that they are not responsible for lost/stolen GCs. Some will replace them with proof of purchase. I'm not sure what TRU and Filene's do for lost GCs. If your DB paid with a CC, they may be able to reproduce a receipt for him using his CC info and approximate date of purchase. Once they have a copy of the receipt, they may be able to cancel the old GCs and issue new ones. But that's a best-case scenario.

I hope that either the GCs or the receipts turn up soon. Has the trash already been picked up? For $200, I wouldn't be above diving into the garbage to find them...but that's just me.

Exactly my thoughts. We always have separate trash bags for wrapping paper. Can you go thru those bags and look for them?

thanks... all the wrapping paper and empty boxes were put into a large box from one of my daughters gift ..and that was already picked up by the trashman. we haven't thrown out our regular trash barrel yet so I am gonna go through that tonight....

I sure hope you can sort this out.

I tried to return something to ToysRUs without a receit and they said they DO NOT keep sales in their computer so they can't look up purchases.

WOW - I did the same thing about 5 years ago. Threw out by mistake gifts that were unwrapped and stuck in with paper and some other items. I'll never forget it.

Yikes! This is why I'm always super carefull with GC's I get, to the point of being paranoid!

Actually the stores don't get to count gift cards as revenue until they have been redeemed so they probably have a time frame probably at least after a year where once they aren't used then the stores count it as revenue

That's tough! It is going to depend on the store system though- if they have the ability to track purchases or not. I worked for a major retailer and although our GC's stated that we were not responsible for lost cards, we did try to help the customer. We had a system where we could look up purchases, find the current balance of the original card and reissue a new one for that same amount. But like I said, it's going to depend on the store and their system abilities. It wouldn't hurt to call their customer service number and see what is possible!

When my grands Walmart card was stolen at Pop, I brought the receipt to Walmart, they brought up the card, deducted what was already spent (in Orlando, the creep) and gave us a card for the balance, and cancelled the rest of the original card.

I have to say I am always afraid of this happening to us. When I purchase any type of card whether it is a gift card or a phone card I always store the receipt seperately.
