Okay ladies who flat iron their hair -

I flat iron my hair probably 2 or 3 times a week. Maybe less. My straightener works fine, but recently it has started smelling like french fries or fried food when it gets hot! GROSS! My roommate said it's because of the dead hair cells on the part that gets hot (????).

Anyway, anyone ever had a straightener smell like french fries? :scared: Do I need to get a new one or can I clean it or something? It still works fine.

Thanks!
Amanda

Hmmm...
I was using the flat iron on my dd's hair yesterday and she said it smelled like grilled cheese

:confused3

It's likely a build up of hair products on the iron that is making it smell weird. You should clean it every week or so.

And this is a reason why I just let my wavy hair go natural. :) I hate when my hair smells like fast food!

Okay - clean with a Brillo pad - will do.

I didn't mind the french fry smell until today, when I was out somewhere and thinking "Who around me is eating french fries?" And it was my HAIR! :scared1: So... off to clean now!!!! :rolleyes1

We're you straightening your hair when it was damp? And/or if you're not gliding it fast enough through your hair, you may be literally frying your hair, thus the fried smell.

Well if you use self tanner it smells like cooking hamburgers so if you use heat up the flat iron you will have a whole little McDonald's going on for you.

:lmao: Well, at least I got a laugh out of my disgusting straightener!

Oh, and I use this spray stuff on my hair before I flat iron it. Like a heat protection thing. Maybe that is the source of the funny smell?

I'm sure that's it. The spray dampens your hair a bit and then applying so much heat to the combination of damp hair/spray is causing the smell. But I'm sure the end result is worth the french fry smell. :)

I think the "my straightener smells like french fries" sounds like a great tag to me! :rotfl2:

Ahhhh - well, I always make sure my hair is 100% dry before I straighten it, but maybe the spray is making it damp. Maybe I should wait a few minutes so the spray is dry before I straighten.

I knew the DIS would have an answer to the "my straightener smells like french fries" dilemma! :lmao:

It's a good idea not to straighten your hair while it's damp anyway, regardless of french fry smell -- using hot tools on wet or damp hair can essentially fry the hair. I'm sure you don't want that!

Hmmm, I have a straigtner that's specifically made for wet hair. It sucks out all the water and dries it as I straighten. Luckly I only use it on the weekends when I have plans. I'm too lazy to get up in the mornings to straighten my hair.

Okaaay... clearly an exception to the rule. I guess I should have said it's a bad idea to attempt to straighten wet hair with MOST flat irons.
