My husband has told me I can pick one lens and he will get it before our December trip....the problem is I can't decide which one. I thought I wanted to replace my 18-55, but since I have start researching I am really interested in the 35mm. So which one should I get?!?!?! Suggestions, comments....anything! Thanks!!!

What kind of camera do you have?

What did you want to replace your 18-55mm with? An 18-200mm? 24-105? Is there a price limit??

What 35mm are you looking at?

For Disney my favorite was my Sigma 30mm f/1.4. I took this with my 18-200 and each spent about half the time on my camera.

For me the next lens would be one that covers a range I currently do not have, either 55-250 or 10-22. Of course the 50 f/1.8 is always nice to have too, at only about $100. ;)

:rotfl: while that would be nice....there is no way DH is letting me spend that kind of money!!!

I have a Nikon D60 (that I bought from a friend when she upgraded to the
D90) I had a 18-55 and a 55-200 but my 18-55 was stolen out of my DD's diaper bag. So I'm trying to decide what would be best for the trip. I thought I would just replace the 18-55 but then I started looking around and really like the 33mm. The one I'm looking at is Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX.

Thanks for the help!! I used to shoot film but this is my first DSLR since starting back to photography and while some of it has come back there is a lot that is new and I still have to learn!!!

I have a 50mm 1.8 and it is great for what I got it for...but now I REALLY NEEEED a 35mm. The 50 is just not good when you want to take a picture and you are not a good distance. Oh well...that is my next lens!!! :thumbsup2

That's kind of my fear...I have the 55-200 but I'm really wanting something for when we are doing character meals so not having a lot of room for pictures....I'm really thinking I need them both, and do plan on getting them both eventually but one won't be until after disney.....UGH I hate decisions!! LOL!!!

Don't mind Mark, he just rents that lens from time to time to document his nasal hair loss.

PS. Be sure to put a luggage tag on that lens handle so Magical Express knows where to send it....

No kidding right...it would be a shame for it to get lost! LOL!!!;)

I had a feeling Mark would pick this lens.

My only concern about the 1200mm focal length is...how do you take family snapshots at Disney with this lens? You'd have your family stand in front of Cinderella's Castle, and then you'd set up your camera/lens at the Main Street Railroad Station. You'd need a walkie-talkie or cell phone to tell your family to "move a little to the left."

I also don't think the pop-up flash will reach that far.

And it'd be really hard to include yourself in the picture, too. The self-timer is only 10 seconds.

However, with an aperture of f/5.6, is it good for low-light photography?

Oh, and there's no "Image Stabilization" in this lens, so it'll be a little tough to hand-hold for a steady shot. :)

In all seriousness, though, I'd recommend either the 18-200mm lens, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens, or that 35mm f/1.8 lens.

For character meals, you'll want to have a wider lens, cuz you never know how close you're going to be to Winnie the Pooh at the dinner table. I'm not quite sure if 30mm is wide enough for those kinds of shots. It might be, but I'll let someone else weigh in on that.

The 18-200mm lens is a great travel lens. It's really versatile, with an 11x zoom range. One of the downsides is that it might be tougher for low-light situations.

I know some people say you can use the 30/35mm for character meals and such but I wasn't a big fan. I used my Sigma 30mm at dinners this past trip to get pictures of food shots. Every once in a while I'd try to take a picture of my mom or have someone take a picture of us and it was kind of awkward.

I have the 18-200mm. I love it. Many of my shots on my trip report were taken with this lens, incl the Fantasmic shots. As a family focused trip, I'd get the 18-200, if you're looking to really get creative or "photograph" Disney instead of "take pictures" at Disney, I'd get the 18-200.

Thanks for the input. Off to look at the 18-200!! I'll save the 33 or 35 until closer to Christmas.

You will def. want wider than 35mm at Disney. Not to confuse the issue but you already have a 55-200mm for the 200mm end, for less $$ than the 18-200mm you could get an 18-70mm($380) or 18-105mmVR($360) AND get the 35mm 1.8($199) for low light.

I second that suggestion. I think the 18-200 is nice and you definitely need something on the wider end, but the 35mm f/1.8 you will love. If it were me, I'd probably go with the 18-105VR and the 35mm.

Happy shopping! :goodvibes

I will third this! I really like my 18-105 for basic photography such as birthday parties and family functions. It gives you a little reach and yet is wide enough to get group shots. If I don't want to "get fancy" that's what I use. The 35 1.8 would be great for your parade shots and dark rides. Those two alone would be a nice light, set up. What I would not do is get another kit lens.

So what you do is you tell your hubby the "experts" say you should get the 18-200 for convenience at Disney but you were thinking for just a little over half of that price you could get these two. They'd still be light and easy to carry and what a bargain!:thumbsup2 The trick is to show him the 18-200mm and it's price FIRST. He'll be so relieved when he sees the price of the other two combined he'll want to get those for you!

The funniest thing is when I was trying to figure out what to get he told me to come on here and ask "my board" what you guys thought!! LOL!! I ended up getting the 18-105 and the 35mm.

Thanks for all the answers!! Now I just need to get to WDW to try them all out!
