I work a fair amount with kids and adults who use picture symbols to communicate. Either through Picture Exchange (e.g. you give someone a picture of what you want) or in schedules, task lists, etc . . Usually the pictures are on little semi-rigid squares (think cardboard) with velcro on the back so you can put them in book, or a sentence strip, or a schedule.
Sometimes things come up where you need a picture for just a little while. You need a photo of a sub on a communication board, or you're at the toy store and a kid is reaching for a toy and you want to talk about that toy, but of course you don't have a picture of a stranger or a toy you've never heard of handy. Making a picture is a pain. You need to take or find a picture, mount it on something that's not floppy like poster board, laminate it, put the velcro on . . . It's totally worth it if you have time and you're going to be talking about the thing regularly, but a pain in the neck when you're out in the community and you realize you need a picture of X and you don't have your computer, laminator, and velcro with you.
So, this is what I want. You know how you can buy binders with clear plastic over the cover, and it's open at the top so you can slip in a sheet of paper? I want a little square of white binder like material, with a plastic cover like that on the binder, and an opening on the top to fit in little squares. I'd package it in a kit with wet erase markers (e.g. vis a vis) and little squares of stiff paper, precut to the size. Examples of how I'd use it:
1) You're at the park and you see a cool piece of equipment, and want to talk about it, so you quickly sketch a picture with a vis a vis right on the plastic,
2) You're looking at the "wish list" in the Toys R Us Catalog, and your kid wants to ask Santa for something, so you cut out the picture and slip it in.
3) You're at school, and someone sends a new brand of cereal for snack and your want to ask the child which they choose, so you cut off a tab from the cereal box and slip it in.
4) You have a sub in your classroom, and you snap and print a picture and slip it in.
etc . . . Basically, a quick way to make a temporary Picture in a minute.
Then when you're done with that picture, you can take it out or erase it and use it for something else.
