So my daughter and I Finally came home from the hospital on Friday after being there for 18 days...Her appendix ruptured and caused a bunch of nasty things to occur...Anyways she lost 10 pounds while being in there and it is freaking me out!! She didnt have 10 pounds to lose...She is 8 years old and tall for her age..I call her our little Nicole Richie..cause she is that skinny now..She is to be on a pureed diet for the next two weeks..but honestly she cant stand it..so i have given her soft things she likes like mac n cheese...milksshakes...carnation instant breakfast drinks..with icecream in them...oatmeal with vit d milk butter and brown sugar in it..and SHE ISNT GAINING AN OUNCE!! I dont know what to do..Am i being paranoid for nothing..I would think by now she would have gained something...Any ideas ..suggestions...please..I am one FREAKED out mama!!! :guilty:

Now the first thing you got to do is to calm down. Take a few deep breaths and remind yourself everythings ok. Now if you think about it regular people don't gain an ounce in a few days. It takes a few days or weeks to gain more weight, expecially if you have not gotten a growth spurt (sp?) recently. So don't worry, all of us know it takes a more then a few days to gain an ounce. Also remember you went into this but you came out stronger.

Do something relaxing with your daughter. If you start freaking out don't let her see it because most likely she will be freaked out too ( I know this because my neighbor has a problem and is afraid of bugs and desease's (sp?) She has an adopted son and she cries alot which scares him and in turn makes him scared)

When ever you start panicing again just take a few deep breaths. everthing going to go okay

FIrst of all momma, breath :grouphug:

It'll be alright. As long as she's not losing any more weight I think she's alright. But call your doctor, ask him if it's ok. But for tonight, just keep doing what you're doing. If they were worried, they would have kept her.

It will be alright.

I can't imagine all that's happened though. I'd be freaked too. But all that is over. She's home with you. You're her momma. If something was terribly wrong you would have already taken her back to the hospital. But it's not. She's ok, she's just taking some time to recover. :grouphug:

First of all relax. It has been 2 days.

There is nothing wrong with being skinny as long as your are healthy and packing in fatty foods and empty sugar calories isn't healthy.

Are the doctors concerned? What about something like Ensure or Boost. Don't they make a kids version Pediacare or something like that. I'd first talk to her doctors though before starting a supplement.

If the infection spread to her colon you really do need to watch what she eats. What about pureeing hearty soups like Beef Stew.

I understand how scared you are. Our DD is also very small and thin. Whenever she gets sick and won't eat I really start to worry about her losing weight.

You have to remember her body has been through a shock and needs time to heal. I wouldn't push fatty food w/o getting your dr ok. As much as you want her to gain back that weight rushing it might cause more harm than good. In due time she'll be back to her old self and her weight will get back to what it was.

I hope she's better soon. Remember to take care of yourself as well.

Relax. Lets talk about what she can eat. Cream of Rice, Soft scrambled eggs.

Fruit Juice has a lot of calories. Make her a nice Chicken soup from scratch

Buy a Natural or Organic Chicken.
Brown the chicken in a heavy soup pot along with onion, carrots & celery.
After they are golden brown add 3 boxes of Chicken broth. Make sure it does not have MSG in it. Add fresh parsley & let it simmer 2 hours it will be so good for her.

Now I strain the broth & discard the vegetables. You can serve it Jewish Style with no vegetables & egg noodle only or add some sliced carrots & celery.

We like large egg noodles. Do you have a Traders Joe's

In agree with the rest. Calm down because she'll feel it. If the doctors didn't think she could handle it thry wouldn't have have let her go.

Protein drinks and Gatorade to build up her system.

Better yet...call the Dr. and speak to him and tell him your concerns.

thank you all for your words....i have been giving her pediasure for kids...milkshakes..carnation instant breakfasts...all that stuff...trust me i am not cramming hamburgers and stuff like that down her..we came home from the hospital with a list of fattening things they want her to eat..and lots of fat and sugar were on the list...i would never jeopardize my childs health... :confused3

In second grade my Ds fell off the monkey bars and broke his jaw. The drs. didnt wire the jaw but I had to puree everything he ate for 2 1/2 months. He also lost alot of weight that he didnt need to lose. If ds wanted a happy meal we bought it and pureed it. It became a game of his wants versus the blender. Most of the food he did eat.

Ask your daughter what she wants to eat and then puree it.

Best wishes to your daughter and a speedy recovery. My BIL had this happen to him recently and it is an ordeal to go through.
