Help! I need an appetizer that does not contain...

Thanks, everyone!!!!LOL. That's what I should have done, but it's automatic with me, "What can I bring?" :faint: Now I have to come up with an appetizer for a group of people who can't eat anything. I usually make a peach-based rib thing - it's really good - but peaches and apricots are out, lol.

I was hoping to avoid "Pigs in a blanket", but with some of the weinie twists the DIS has provided, I think I might be able to pull it off.

There's only so much you can do with all these restrictions.

DS suggested Gansta Burg. I didn't even ask what that was - don't wanna know.

OK...now I gotta know what Gansta Burg is!

Did the hostess actually give you a list of restrictions???

Don't know what the heck it's called but I basically brown 1lb sausage and 1lb ground meat (I use ground turkey) and then melt about half a lb. of velveeta into the meats.

Put a tablespoon of the meat/cheese mixture on those little rye cocktail breads and bake in the oven for about 20-25 minutes...

That's what I'm making for NYE
LOL, that's DH's favorite and he suggested it, but I turned it down. After you posted, I said it might not be a bad idea.

For the first time EVER, he said he was going to sign up just to tell you that 1) You stole the recipe from him and 2) Why do I listen to DISers and not to him.

Says his screen name will be "Mickey Killer." (He - gasp - doesn't like Mickey.) So if you see a Mickey Killer, feel free to ignore him. It's really easy, trust me. :)

If the hostess gave me that many restrictions-- I'd be really put off. Passive agressive me would bring something I'd like to eat (usually on the no list) or I'd brings something really different and tasteless like wheatgerm salad.

I make whole water chestnuts wrapped in bacon for people who don't eat seafood. It's a yummy (and cheap) alternative to scallops wrapped in bacon. Just cut a bacon slice in half, wrap around water chestnut, secure with toothpick and bake until crispy!
You can also make it with veggie bacon for peeps that don't eat meat.

Wow that's not very nice :( I try to accomodate all no matter what foods they can or cannot eat. What if they were allergies? You could wind up making someone really ill.

OK...now I gotta know what Gansta Burg is!

Gangsta Burg is a song... well and someone gets shot.

There is also a gangsta burger which has all kinds of stuff in the hamburger.
There is also a ghetto burger which is the exact opposite of the gangster burger.

A list of 20 restrictions is not good for anyone. Those people could just be picky and not full of allergies. If I know its an allergy that's a different story, but if it is jut pickiness, well that's your problem.

I would personally be put off if someone gave me a huge DON'T list for something to bring.

Hummus with pita chips. Very easy and very tasty. I just take a can of garbanzo beans and food process it with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, lots of garlic cloves and a little bit of cayenne and salt.

There's a difference between can't and won't though. If this is because of people that "won't" I'd be pissed.

Not exactly. I asked what I could bring and she said an appetizer would be great, so I said I'd make the peach rib thing. Then she said that would be great and she wasn't sure what was in it, but remember her and her DD's allergy. Peaches, apricots out. It just went on from there, lol. Everyone has an allergy. One is even a diabetic, lol. Forgot to mention that. :)

There will only be eight adults, eight teens, two grammer school kids, a preschooler and a 2yo. But the kids will all be off doing their own thing and I don't really care if they don't like it - they can eat Oreos.

I'm thinking I'll do the burger meat/sausage thingy and some slightly frou-frou pigs in a blanket (or pigs in bacon and sugar).

See that's my issue as well. If they won't --forget it, it is annoying. Sure I try to accommodate preferences (as a former vegetarian) but to be handed a laundry list of don'ts is so tacky.

A true hostess accepts what is brought and makes do with it.

Really that many restrictions for such a small crowd? Cheese and crackers work well.

See that burger sausage thing would be "too meaty" for me, but I'd eat it if it was brought to my house.

Me too. I don't think I'd ever survive if I had given birth to a picky kid. People that just "won't" eat something drive me nuts. I absolutely loath blue cheese(which is pretty much the only thing I don't like:lmao: ) but I would never ask someone else not to use it just because of me.:confused3

I guess I am just different. I treat dislikes the same as I would a vegetarian. It is absolutely no different to me than that. If someone chooses not to eat a food because they hate the taste of it it doesn't bother me. Then again my family is filled with lots of restrictions (choice and medical) so I don't let it get to me.

That list wasn't that bad to me though. It is super easy to find foods to make that don't involve all of those ingredients. I personally hate cream cheese so I know of lots of foods that would easiliy fit into those restrictions :)

Of course I don't do this with my children. They actually eat more than I do and are less picky. I am speaking of adults though who have tried enough to know what tastes good or what would make them gag.

ITA! (I'm not a blue cheese lover either).

spinach, apricots, peaches, pineapples, nut nuts (peanuts okay), sour cream, cream cheese or meatballs (chopped up meatballs okay, primarily meatball no good.)

No fresh fruit. Also nothing Asian. Or too spicy.

No beer. No liquor that has any of the forbidden ingredients in it.

eta: No seafood, please.

:faint:

Help me. I'm sinking.

You have just taken out the entire arsenal of southern party food ingredients! I'm stumped.:goodvibes No cream cheese!

ETA! Oh, I've got it. Stuffed mushrooms (sausage with bread crumbs?). You can make them ahead of time pretty easily.

So no spinach, apricots, peaches, pineapples, nuts, sour cream, cream cheese, meatballs, fresh fruit, Asian, spicy, beer, liquor, or seafood?

Wow- um water?

Chicken tenders w/ ranch, bbq, or honey mustard on the side
Guacamole w/ tortilla chips
cheese, crackers, olive, & pickle tray (was going to say grapes, but..)
Hummus & pita chips
Ham & cheese party rolls

If it was just allergies, that would be one thing. But what, somebody is allergic to meatballs, but not chopped up meatball? Allergic to "asian" and "too spicy"? I don't think so, lol. Sounds like annoying picky people to me ;)

Even if it were just allergies, assuming nobody had a contact or airborne allergy (like extreme peanut allergy or something), I don't really get why you couldn't bring something with the offending substance (as long as it was labeled). Everybody at these kinds of things doesn't have to eat every single dish!
