Help My DS13 really really wants an Xbox for Christmas, and I would love to be a cool mom and get it, but I just can't. I think the games seem very violent and nasty. They are either killing people or there is a war of some kind or how about the "Grand Theft Auto", yeah let's teach him how to steal a car. And have you ever seen some of the women on these games. Just what I want him to one day bring home. NOT! Does anyone have an Xbox, and think that there are games that are OK. I only seem to come across disturbing ones. Oh and by the way, we have a Wii, but DS think the games are suited for younger kids, now that he is a teen. He is also my oldest, so it bothers me that this violence could be around the other 3 kids. Bring on the opinions and comments as I would love to find out what everyone thinks.
Thanks!

We have an XBox and an XBox 360. They belong to DS but DH plays also on Madden football. There are good games out there, just have to be careful and research each one. The only game we have that I'm not particularly fond of is Halo as it has some 4 letter words. DH says he thinks it can be blocked, they just play it with the volume turned down. The majority of our other games are sports, Star Wars, any of the Legos series, Sonic, etc. With your DS being a teen though I don't know that any of those, besides the sports related games would be of interest.

Good luck in your decision.

Sports and music games are probably the biggest draw to teens besides the violent games. XBOX 360 does have a good selection of both of these genres, but like you said the biggest thing they sell are the violent games.

If it helps, here is a link to a popular gaming site called Gamespot. It has a good write up about every game available (for all systems). You could go there and check out what kinds of games are available for the XBox 360 in the different genres, and learn a little more about them.

There are some really violent and offensive games for the XBox and the XBox 360. There are also some very family friendly games. We have all the consoles and probably play the 360 the most. (Well, until the last couple of weeks - right now we're playing lots of Little Big Planet on the PS3 and Animal Crossing on the Wii).

Do you mean XBox or XBox 360? If you are looking at buying a new one, that would be the 360. Off the top of my head, some family friendly games for the 360 are: Lego Batman, Lego Indiana Jones, Lego Star Wars, Beautiful Katamari, Viva Pinata, PGR4, Madden, Burnout Paradise (though you do crash cars, but no one gets hurt). . . I'm sure there are lots of others, as well. We play Rock Band and Rock Band 2 often as a family, but some of the lyrics might not be great for every family.

My son is 12 and has been playing the XBox and the XBox 360 for several years, but of course we don't allow him to play the more adult/offensive games. Has your son mentioned specific games he is wanting to play? If he wants the console for Grand Theft Auto and games like that then I can see why you object. If he wants it for the more family friendly games, then you could get it and the games you approve of and just not get the games you object to.

Anyway, I guess my point is, there are family friendly games available now for all the game consoles, and there are objectionable games for all of them, too. (Even the Wii! Resident Evil, for example.) Just because the console can play games like Grand Theft Auto doesn't mean you have to buy the game, so just getting the console doesn't mean your child will be playing all the offensive games - but it does mean you'd have to be willing to research games before buying them. If you have any specific questions I'd be happy to try to answer them, and I know there are lots of other gamers on here who will probably weigh in. Good luck!
