So today well I was at work my husband listed some of the things I had asked him to on craigslist. When I got off work he says "good news I listed the couch and a woman is going to send a check" I promptly said "and let me guess she is going to send her moving truck to get it?" He shockingly said "yes" I said "well the giant scam warning right before the request didn't prompt you to delete? What about the fact that she says she is deaf so you can't call her?"

Long story short I am mad and my husband gave out his full name, our home address, and telephone number! :scared1:

So now what? I know it is a scam. I know if I get a check it will be fake. I know they know where I live.

What do I do?

TIA

Well you haven't been scammed yet. Get back with them and tell them it's cash or no deal. If you can't get in touch, just don't cash the check. Nobody is actually coming with a truck.

I guess I'm confused. Why can't you just keep the couch and sell it to someone else? Isn't your name address and phone number in the phone book? Did he give out info such as SSN or bank account numbers?

Oh NO! :headache: Let's see.... I would first email the "customer" and explain that your husband was not authorized to approve a check in the mail. Offer to mail it back to her after you receive it. Explain to her cash only.

Um.... change the locks? :confused3

And make sure you have caller id on your phone. Don't think the scammer can get any financial info from what you've given out. Oh boy. Good luck.

Don't take any money, don't give em the couch. PULL the AD NOW!
Who care that they know where you live...they just know you were selling a couch, right? If you had valuables, THEN I would PULL all the ads and wait a while to re-list at a much later date......
Use an answering machine and do not accept the call, etc.......

Um.... change the locks? :confused3

Maybe I'm missing something, but what good would changing the locks do? Her husband didn't mail her a house key, right? :confused3

Anyway, you don't know for sure if you've been scammed. If you want cash only, then e-mail and make that change. If she won't accept, then oh well.

Why on earth would she need to change her locks???

It's not like her dh mailed the woman his house key! LOL

I seriously just laughed out loud. Poor DW. Can you imagine the DH saying, "And I mailed a housekey so they could get the couch at their leisure...." Omg. :lmao::rotfl:

Okay so maybe I over reacted. I am not expecting house guests and you guys are right they can't get to any of my account info with basic PUBLIC information. It is just that feeling that DH finally did something I asked and it turned into more work.

Thanks for making me laugh and calming my nerves!! :)

:laughing::laughing::laughing:
Sounds like my DH alot of the time!

You know whoever first said "when you want something done right do it yourself" first was a married woman!

A recently divorced friend of mine listed her wedding ring set on Craig's list. She had never listed anything before. A couple of days later I see that I had 9 missed calls from her on my caller I.D., so I call her to find out what she needed. She was so excited because she had sold her ring set, but had to mail the rings to the buyer's son because the buyer was out of the country. She said he was going to pay with Paypal. I told her not to mail the rings and she said "Why?" I told her it was probably a scam and either the paypal email saying he sent the money would be a fake, or that he'd claim he never got the rings and Paypal would refund him the money if he really did pay. She'd be out her rings and the money.

She didn't believe me at first so I said, "Okay, go ahead and send the rings to this guy's son who doesn't even live in our city or part of the country for that matter, yet this man happened to "find" your craigslist ad and is sending the wedding set to his son." :confused3

I finally got her to realize that it was a scam. She told him cash only and never heard back.

I think our husbands might be related. My husband has actually fallen for this BS more than once! Thankfully he never gave out any info...

I would email back and tell them they can tell it is the house for the moving Van to come to because your DH is the sheriff and his patrol car is parked at the information provided.
Then PUT SCAM in the biggest font you can...play their game back
:3dglasses

I would email her back and tell her that you will not take a check, that it is a cash only offer. For now on when listing on CL, include that the offer will be cash only (or Paypal if you have an account there and are ok with it). I am sorry to hear that your husband fell right into the trap. You have no obligation to sell the couch to this particular woman. Keep the ad up and sell it to someone else if this person won't pay by a more secure method. You should also modify the ad to include the payment methods you will except, and that there will be no exceptions. Good luck! :wizard:

I was actually joking.... I sensed OP freaking out and was trying to be somewhat silly. Sorry that one backfired. That's the problem with typing on a discussion board. No tone of voice etc.

Is this moving truck coming from Nigeria? :rotfl:

I knew you were jokng.

I emailed back cash only and I haven't heard a word back.

I knew I could get out of it. I just needed a quick vent and for someone to tell me I was okay
