HELP! Grammar Expert Needed

and ASAP. I'm finishing up a paper for class (was JUST getting read to email it to my prof) and in my "observation" section (my personal opinion/thoughts) I am getting very confuzzled. What's tripping me up is the affect/effect usage. I can read the rules about that until I'm blue in the face and think I understand, but when I go to use them in a paper, I get confused.

If anyone is reading now and is great with proofreading, especially for that particular issue, I'd love to PM the last section for comment.

Yeah, I get so confused when actually writing it, though. It's probably the thing that trips me up the most.

I am no expert ....but, I get confuzzled on that one as well. I know one is a noun and one is a verb, but for the longest time got them mixed up.

Then I went into television production where they use...Special Effects...with an "E". And when I'm getting confuzzled, I just think of that and I am able to remember. Dorky--but it works for me.

I think that most people who are decent writers still have some things that trip them up. My exH used to do editing as part of his job, so one time when I was writing something with the effect/affect confusion I asked him, thinking he'd be able to quickly tell me which was right. He got confused, had to look it up, and still wasn't certain. Made me feel better....AKA misery loves company.

Not always. You can effect something (create it). You can have an affect, which is your appearance (usually used in medical jargon, to describe someone's demonstrated emotions).

Laura, our language is not complete without the exceptions that prove the rule. I can't imagine how difficult it is to very fluently learn English as a second language.

I just did that with the 2 examples that are confusing me the most and they both made sense. Maybe that means that both are true....it affected and effected me. Where's the brick wall smilie?

Both of them used the word "effect" and according to the excellent knowledge of my 2 proofreaders.....my thanks go out to the wonderfully talented Christine and my to the editing skills of my BIL.... I used them correctly!



I'm doing a final read-thru of my paper before I send it to the prof.

Okay, the problem's resolved - but another easy way to remember the difference is Affect is an Action word, i.e. they both start with the letter A.

That is the exact way that I remember it! I don't know why, but it works for me!
