Help! Good Sam vs AAA for emergency roadside

It is time to renew my emergency roadside plan. I have always had AAA plus RV, but I never really looked into Good Sam's roadside assistance. I've checked out both online & seems that they offer obout the same coverage.

AAA would cost me $100.95 per yr (plus RV for DH & self)
Good Sam would cost $93.00 (membership 12.95 plus 79.95 for roadside assistance)

What do you all recommend?

We did the same comparison last fall.

I chose the AAA because of all the other benefits that we get from AAA. Now that I am planning another Disney trip, I am glad I made the choice because of the discounts they offer.

We still belong to the Good Sams club also.

Check with your insurance company. You might be able to add road side assistance to your policy for less. It is worth a phone call to check your options. Ours was less than Good Sams.

We're going to be checking into this now that we have a pop up, but as AAA is saving us 15% per night on our FW trip, I think we'll keep it. I get a 20% discount at my dry cleaners, and other stuff too.

We have roadside service with our insurance co., Progressive, it's only $35.00 per year. I'd definitely check with my insurance co. first. Good luck.

Be careful with an RV and AAA, coverage is not consistent from area to area. Your coverage is determined by the AAA region you are in when you have the breakdown, not by the coverage purchased. If the region does not have an RV plan, then you will not get RV services. Good Sam coverage is the same through out the country and that is why we went with Good Sam. Before we had an RV we had good success with AAA.

We have AAA Plus for me and DH has Good Sam which yes also covers me. Are policies are coming due in July and we are already trying to figure out what to do. We do like getting "free" travel books from AAA, but many of the other discounts they offer we don't use. The nice thing about the + is that they tow you upto 100 miles. Down side of AAA is it is a pp charge rather then family like Good Sam. I think I will now look into our vehicle insurance co for roadside . I guess we have to lay it all out and see what the best option is. I do know that our local AAA doesn't even offer the RV policy we have to go 1hr away to get it. This may not be much help ,but hopefully it is more information to your cause.

If you buy the AAA RV plan and the region you break down in has an RV plan, you will be covered to the extent of the break down region's RV plan. If there is no RV plan in the break down region, they will not supply any RV services or towing. It ends up being hit or miss with AAA unfortunately.

I just got off the phone with my car insurance company and was quoted a price of $15 /yr for road emergency service. WOW. I had to ask if I heard right. It does cover our car, truck and TT. The plan is a reimbursement plan and she did say they will kick you off if you abuse it. I think we used AAA's emergency 3 times in the 14 yrs we have had it so, did I say WOW. We problably will keep 1 AAA membership with + because it tows up to 100 miles and I travel out of state to visit family and it would be nice to come home with the car rather then hanging out at the closest garage.

Isn't a bit sad when you get to the age in life that low insurance quotes can brighten your day!

This original post is 2006 - whats the latest out there for emergency coverage?

We had to use our emergency tow coverage (via Geico) last year when DH was hit by a drunk driver whilst towing the TT - he'd gone to fetch it from storage. The drunk had been playing golf all day. They simply towed the SUV with the trailer still attached to the repair shop.

I'm going to check our new insurance coverage for both car & trailer. What do AAA and Good Sam offer?

We prefer Good Sam. It is around 119 per year and it covers all four of our vehicles and the camper NATIONWIDE. AAA+ RV was going to be 180 per year and there are states where RV towing is not provided. So it was an easy choice for us. We have Good Sam for the emergency road service, and we have a single AAA standard membership for myself at $45 per year for the Disney and non Disney campground/hotel room discounts

AAA, RV PLUS, couldn't service a flat tire on a MH in Indianapolis either!

AAA gives you 4 calls per year. Good Sam appears to be unlimited.

For that reason, we actually have both, and pay for 2 AAA memberships (not a joint one for spouse)

We've used 3 of my husband's AAA calls so far this year for tire blowouts, no Good Sam.

AAA has not once been able to inflate our tires to the 80PSI required, though, even though we've told them ahead of time to bring a proper compressor.

Good Sam is by far better for RV's than AAA, if you compare it line by line. Tow milage is higher, all cars in household covered, and any vehicle you happen to be driving is covered. Another thing Good Sam does is this. Many large motorhomes (mine included) do not carry a spare. When I call Good Sam about a flat, they ask if we have a spare, I tell them no, and they ask what my tire size and brand preference is (if available). Then they send a truck with the tire (of course I have to pay for the tire), then the service guy removes the tire, pulls it off the rim, puts the new one on, & puts it back on the motorhome. The complete service call is covered, except the price of the tire. I have been told this service may not be available everywhere, but me & some of the people I know have not run across an area where it is not.

I do keep a basic AAA membership, just for me, for the discounts.

I haven't researched ALL the plans out there, but I like one thing that seems to be unique to AAA. They tow up to 100 miles to the place of MY choice. Could be past closer service centers, could be to a campground, my choice. Some others say no limit on the distance, but will tow you to the closest service place THEY can find.

It is a plan truly designed for RV's. They also give more miles.

Also, I had a flat on my Dually and because it was an inside rear tire AAA would not send anyone out. They would only cover the outside tire. Coach-net will. I also had another problem where I broke down with my FORD and they sent a Tow truck that could barely Tow a Smart Car. I switched to Coach-Net after that and have not had a problem. Of course, I now own a Dodge and have not had the need.
