Help get my son on Rock & Roller Coaster!!!

Truth be told.. here are some facts....

The Rock 'n' Roller Coaster opened at Dsney's Hollywod Studios on July 30, 1999.

This thrill ride features a high-speed launch of 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds, three inversions, two rollover loops and one corkscrew -- all firsts for a Walt Disney World attraction. (Technically it's 58 mph but what we don't know won't kill us)

Dumb question, but what's the difference between an inversion, a rollover loop, and a corkscrew?

To me they all sound like the "going upside down part" but they are written here like they are three diffrent things. What's the difference?

Our oldest DS18 despises coasters. This drives my hubby nuts. My mantra to him is "it does not change your ride experience or enjoyment of the atrraction if someone chooses not to participate. You ride and enjoy."

As for me. I'll try anything once. As for RnR, tried it, hated it. I do think that the coaster experience is very different from one to the other. This is the only attraction I avoid at wdw. Well, that's not true...I no longer ride Kali River Rapids either.....but that is a whole different story.

Snowmouse - I am curious about Kali River Rapids. I don't ride anymore because I have ALWAYS been the one going backwards down the hill with the wall of water coming over me. My family thinks it is hysterical that this happens every time I ride but when they ride without me they don't get wet! Now no one wants to even sit next to me!

To the OP - You are right it is really not a big deal. My oldest DS (14) has riden roller coasters (big ones) since he was 5. There is nothing he will not try and is a true thrill seeker (he wants to be an engineer to design thrill rides). DD (13) got a slow start but about 3 years ago started her coaster craze. She will not quite ride everything but there is not much she won't try. Now DS (11) is a different story. For years we have tried to get him to try the coasters (not force just keep asking if he wants to). We went to Hershey Park this week and to all of our surprise (even his) he rode all 11 coasters (some twice). Some he liked, others not too crazy about - that's okay. He even rode the new one - Fahrenheit (check this out if you are a coaster nut). It was pretty intense.

I guess my point is when he is ready to try he will. Sometimes they just need time to make the decision for themselves.

My Kali experience had to do with spending the day VERY wet, hubby refusing to return to the resort for changing, and oh yes...the chafing. UGH, never again.

I hate asparagus. I've tried it and I still don't like it.

No matter how it's cooked, how much I like the cook or the hostess or the dinner party, I still hate asparagus.

Forcing me to eat asparagus will not make me like it. It will make me naseous (sp) and make me angry that you're forcing me to feel ill.

I'm totally OK with the idea that you think I'm missing out on God's gift to vegetables. I'm glad you love it and sincerely hope you enjoy it.

But I still hate asparagus.

Maybe these coasters are your son's version of asparagus??

Moon - This is from my coaster fanatic son:

Inversion - any time you go upsidedown

Roll Over - at the exit of an Immelmann (half loop then half twist exiting in the opposite direction you entered) going directly into a Dive Loop

Corkscrew - a twisting inversion that looks like a corkscrew

I am sure this is more info than you needed to know but that's what I get living with someone who can name all the specs for every popular coaster out there!

Lisa3, thank you and your son for a very informative answer! He sounds like a real expert :thumbsup2

It boggles my mind that he can name everything to do with coasters but I can't get him to do his summer reading. I guess "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" is not as exciting. Can't understand why???:confused3

I loved the analogy to asparagus!!!!

I hate rollercoasters. I hate and will not ride anything with a big drop in it. This said, I love RnR. The launch is very intense, but after that it's a blast. I don't mind the upside down and corkscrews. I don't think you can ever tell what you're doing. I would never ride EE, ToT, or Splash Mtn. I did love Space Mtn at Disneyland because it doesn't have a big drop, but I've never ridden the one at WDW. I really hope they rehab the one in WDW to be like the one in Disneyland. I've ridden BTMR, but one time it jerked my neck real hard and I haven't ridden it since. Thought I would just let you know how a rollercoaster hater felt.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE RNRC!!! ... don't like the teacups though!!! Won't get me on those ... everyone has their own likes/dislikes ... I tried the "bribe" approach just today with dd11 ... I told her I'd go on PrimEVIL Whirl with her if she went on RnRC with me ... NOPE! Even offered $, NOPE again. I guess that settles it!!! ... I'm still going on my roller coasters and she'll do her teacups and EVIL (jerky) Whirl!!! heehee!

Give him time and someday he will try it. Like everyone said here - don't push him (not that you are).

It took me years (many trips down) to try it - and I believe you need to try everything once (even though I will not do those crazy rides in GA the few times I went).

I am sure you explained the ride to him so he get's an idea of what to expect. I went on R&RC once and this is they way I can describe it - the take off is like Mission Space and the rest is like Space Mountain/Everest with a lot more banging/jerking back and fourth. I felt my body take a beaten. I have done Everest also.

This is just how I would describe it - it's as close to it as compared to some rides in WDW - for me. You have been on it - so you would know what he has been on - but again - he will know when he is ready. I used to beg my kids sometimes just when I needed to convince them that it was a tame ride we were going on. I am not one to push them and scare them - they will never ride it again and not trust me next time. Now they need to convince me, lol.

I think you always have to give everyone time no matter how old they are.
One good idea is to always take them with you to queue for the attraction, they are sometimes as much fun as the ride itself and it gives the rider time to adapt. If he or she still does not want to ride there is always an exit at the loading station for those who decide they are still not up to it.

From what the OP says DS has tried and doesn't like. I'd respect that. If in time he changes his mind on a future trip and feels ok going have at it.

I can't stand anything that drops was hysterical on Splash and refuse rollercoasters altogether. I love test track, the teacups. My dd had gone several times in the past on ToT she did it because her older brother wanted her to. She hated it every time. That's just not fun. This year she was firm in her decision not to ride. DS gave her a hard time figuring if he came up with the right words she would go this trip. No go. I finally told him you need to respect someone when they know their limitations. It isn't a weakness to know that it is a strength. He left her alone after that and enjoyed the ride with his other sibs and dad.

If your son doesn't feel comfortable riding don't force him. You want him to have fun and it doesn't sound like this would be fun for him. There are lots of other things you can do together.
