I would give him the codeine for dressing changes. Any manipulation of the finger probably really hurts. The hospital wouldn't knowingly give you the codeine if they thought it was not needed. Initially things like this don't hurt alot. The dr. injects tons of numbing agents etc. As it heals, things reconnect and rerecognize receptors and the finger can really hurt. Kids also underreport pain, b/c they are so adaptable. Keep track of doses of meds and times. You can alternate the tylenol with codeine and the motrin for effective pain relief. Call thr dr./nurse when in doubt.
