Help for a potential DVC member?

Hello! My husband and I are considering the DVC, and had a few questions...and I think I've found the right place to get some good answers! The Rep. I've spoken with seems only to upsell, as I would have guessed!
Anyway, Let's say we decide to buy.... my questions are:

-Are any of the DVC resorts easily to purchase into? Or will I be limited to a few? (I was hoping for Boardwalk or Beach Club Villas) and if so,
-What are the benefits of my "home" resort? I have the points sheet...do I get discount points on my home resort?
-Is 160 pts. enough to really enjoy WDW--hopefully 2 trips a year?

I would also LOVE some real opinions about availability and the program's worth. There seem to be a lot of posts from people peeved that they haven't been accommodated. And finally, do you really feel that you're getting your money's worth? I was sort of shocked at the point value associated with the Contemporary... and I love to stay there. Will I have to get used to not staying there anymore? Are we limited to the DVC resorts from now on?

I thank anyone who can offer some advice!

Disney will try to sell you SSR or AKV, but you can actually get any of the resorts from them, subject to availability. All of the resorts are readily available on the resale market (very limited AKV).

You get the 11-mo home resort booking advantage. If you really would like to stay at BWV or BCV, I would buy there to get the 11-mo advantage. You annual dues are determined by which resort(s) you own at and how many points you own.

That depends upon the accomodations (studio, 1-BR, 2-BR, GV), the season you travel in, and whether or not you want to stay on Fri/Sat nights.

I am very happy with the value that DVC provides, and I personally have never had any problems with availability.

The best "bang for your buck" is using your points to stay at DVC resorts. Yes, you can use your points for the Contemporary Resort, Poly, GF, etc., but as you've seen the point cost is much larger; plus the point cost can go up every year.

Here's a link to an old thread that may be of some help. Advice for prospective DVC buyers

Read the disclaimers in the first post, because none of the prices or promotions that come up will be valid today. But the basics haven't changed.

The thread starts off with a discussion of the choice of home resort.

I really appreciate all the useful info! Now to decide if we'll take the plunge! Thanks again!
