My Grandma is 75 years old, she has been dying her hair every other week since before I was born. So it's already very over-processed. For whatever reason, she decided to do a home perm :scared1:. I haven't seen her (she won't leave the house) but apparently it's awful. Her hair is now very dry, broken & frizzy.

Any ideas on what we can do to fix this? Can you recommend any heaby duty leave-in conditioners or anything? She's stubborn & cheap - so I'm not sure we'll be able to talk her into going to the salon.

Oh, and to make matters worse.... The whole family is leaving for a cruise next week and she has now refused to be in any pictures :confused3

The damage is already done. I would drag Granny kicking and screaming to a trusted beautician and have them cut in a way to minimize the "damaged" look!!!! There are products they can recommend to help her hair look less damaged. I would pay for it myself if I had too!!!

I suppose a buzz cut is out? What about a nice hat? :hippie:

(Sorry, I have no idea what can be done. I do know some hairdressers that specialize in fixing problems - maybe find one of them and "treat" her to it yourself?)

I remember when my grandmother was sick and couldn't dye her hair. It was pretty much all grey. Our conversation went something like this:

Me: I love your hair this color. It lookds great.

Nanny: NO YOU DON'T IT LOOKS TERRIBLE

I think she was 84 at the time. She also dyed it every other week so we never knew what color it was when we went to visit her.

Good Luck

Probably not much that can be done at home with an OTC, but you could try a very heavy duty type of conditioner (I'd go with something that needed to stay on the hair).

Or, if you want really homegrown, try mayonaise, or mashed avocado. I don't know if you can get her to try that, but you could try.

Yes, I too would take her to a good hair salon and pay for whatever it is they could do.

Barring that, a wig?

:)I am not trying to be funny here but what about some cute matching scarfs and petal caps that match her cruise outfits. Maybe a new beachy hat to match her coverup. When my DH's grandmother decided to go "to her bed" or began spending more time in it... she had a mohawk everyday becasue of her tossing and turning. She finally got the "almost" buzz cut.

I have very, very short hair...my hair now does the same as hers. When DH was making fun of me one morning....I told him, "it reminds me of Grandma"...I thought he was going to fall out on the floor, laughing.:rotfl2:

He looks at the top of my head most mornings and gives me this look...:sad2:

I'm currently letting my hair grow out gray......hats are my friends :thumbsup2

I will be the one that says the damage can be minimized....I had that perm. I have long hair and when I say it was fried, that is an understatement.

The main thing that helped was Aveda, damage remedy conditioner. I would leave it in overnight, wash and use it to condition in the AM. It is a little costly, $25.00 for 6 ounces (I think) however; you use very little.

After about 2 weeks of sleeping with it in, I no longer needed to do it.

To this day, I use it daily (I don't think it is intended for daily use) and totally swear by it.

You do need to go to an Aveda salon to buy it. Some malls have Aveda stores in them. If you google it, you can look by zip code.

:cutie: Okay, you have me smiling. I needed something to make me laugh. :cutie:
I've been there done that myself--more than once. I went through a phase where I changed my hair color every 3 weeks--my way of dealing with roots was to change my total color. :rotfl: Has she washed her hair yet? If she washes it asap she might be able to reverse some of the damage.

If the hairdresser/crew cut thing doesn't work I swear by Garnier's leave in conditioners. Buy a shower cap, buy a turbie twist towel if she doesn't have one already. Have her comb the conditioner into her damp hair, put on the shower cap, and wrap the towel. Keep it on overnight. A night or two and it should work. The conditioner actually makes a great styling cream during the day too.
