Have you tried cooking the rice in chicken broth and/or adding a small amount of cooked chicken breast to it? My old dog had this problem once and the vet told us to try this, take the dog food away, and to limit the water intake. Just make sure he gets enough water to stay hydrated. I'd call the vet if he doesn't improve. Hope he feels better soon!

Rule of thumb is to pretty much give it 24 hours. After that...call the vet, he could have something hung in his system. Are you missing toys or has he eaten any rawhides lately? Also, you can give a dog Immodium. It is safe.

This works for me, my vet always said to not feed them for just 1 day only water. Boil White Rice and Chicken and start to feed him that and then in a day or two start adding his kibble back in food then just his food. It always seems to work for my dogs, not feeding for 24 hrs seems to help their insides to calm down a bit. He may be ok with eating the rice if your adding the boiled chicken too, good luck and hope he feels better soon :)

My vet always recommends rice and boiled hamburger (which my dog loves). Is there any blood in his stool? I agree with calling the vet after 24 hours especially if there is blood. Is he vomitting too?

Yup, browned hamburger and rice works. I have also heard that canned pumpkin helps too, but never had any on hand to try.

I've used brown rice cooked in broth and mixed with beef in broth stage 1baby food. Worked great and my dog loved it.

But I agree, if it has been more than 24 hrs and you can't identify what the dog ate to cause it, ie a forbidden food like grapes, chocolate etc, I'd call the vet and see what they say. My dog got a hold of the preservative pouch from a pepperoni bag and had diarhea for 3 days. The vet had me do the rice/beef food and slowly mix kibble back in the third day.

Good luck!

My dogs will always eat some canned pumpkin and it works very well. For a 25 pound dog I give them about 2 tablespoons mixed with some dog food. I usually just keep adding it to the food daily until the can is gone even if they are back to normal. If you use Immodium AD like someone else posted be very careful on the dosage, if you give too much it will cause the dog to vomit.

Petsmart sells something that is like doggie Pepto - we have a puppy who occasionally gets that way (doc says she eats too fast) and give her a teaspoon or so with her breakfast or dinner (We don't "free feed" our dogs eat their food 2 times a day, cause the little ones gets sick when they go too far between meals :) ) But back to the Pepto, lol! I have found the "doggie Pepto" in the vitamin area, pretty inexpensive, about $6. But I do agree with the other posters, if it goes too long, I'd call the vet just to be sure :) Good luck!

Just went through this with my dog last week. With hold food for 24 hours, only allow them to have water to keep them hydrated. Then give small amounts of chicken, slowly adding their normal dog food back in their diet. If after 24 hours of no food they still have the runs, definitely take them to see the vet.

When we adopted our dog last year, he had a serious, serious case of the runs. We brought him to the vet and they gave him anti-diarrhea medication and it worked like a charm. We did have to give it to him a couple of more times after that until he got use to our dog food and he has a nervous stomach so once he got settled into our house, he was fine.

I wouldn't recommend the pumpkin since our vet has us give that to our little dog for constipation.

Our dog gets this a lot since he's had his gall bladder removed and practically anything out of the ordinary causes it for him. Our vet gave us a probiotic to try as first line of defense. If that doesn't work in a couple of days, we take him to the vet. Our probiotic is prescription, but Petsmart sells some too. I wouldn't use canned pumpkin - we've tried it before and it caused loose stool. Stick to rice as far as "home remedies". Good luck!

Thanks everyone ! He was able to eat some rice this morning and his stools have firmed up a little. I will cut off meals until tomorrow and just give him water. I going to go boil some chicken now. Thanks again!

A spoonful of yogurt several times a day has helped my dogs - flavored or plain. It helps balance the intestinal "flora". I have also done canned chicken and white rice.

My dog has a very sensitive stomach and we have battled cases of the runs on and off for a bit. Boiled hamburger and rice has always done the trick for her. We recently switched her food brand and formula and have started giving her a tablespoon of plain yogurt once a day and it has helped tremendously.
