DD6 started throwing up this morning & has been doing so all day. She can't even keep sips of water down for very long! Does anyone have any helpful advice to get her well? :confused3

I called our pediatrician & they said it was probably just a virus & to try to keep her hydrated. She is also complaining with a headache. She received a flu shot at her school yesterday morning, but the nurse thinks it is unrelated. She has had a cough for a while, but she has intermittent asthma & it takes forever to get rid of a cough when she gets one.

I have heard that water can sometimes induce vomiting. Try small amounts of pedilyte or gatorade. Like medicine dropper amounts every 15 minutes or so. The small freeze pops are also good. I would be worried about the headache too. Could be from the act of puking, but you never know. Keep an eye on her and don't wait too long to take her in if you think she is getting dehydrated.

Good Luck :grouphug:

My pediatrician always recommends ice pops when my kids get sick like that. The headache could be because she is dehydrated. Try also freezing some juice in ice cube trays and let her eat those if she can. Good Luck. I hate stomach virus'.

After you get sick(vomit) you should not put anything in your stomach for at least 30 min preferably 1 hour. I let the kids rinse & spit. then it is no more than 2 oz & wait 30min. We do ice chips that way they are not putting to much at once.

the headache actually started last night. i thought maybe it was a side effect of the flu shot so I gave her a dose of children's motrin & she was ok all night. this am she was complaining of a headache once again & i thought the same thing & gave her another dose of the motrin. Not 10 min. later she had to throw up. I thought it may have been because I had given it to her on an empty stomach. Since I work at the school & we were running late, I let her go on to school & brought the motrin with us to give to her after she had breakfast. At around 9 am, she started throwing up again so I brought her home & it had been mostly dry heaves all day. She can't keep anything down & we have waited after each episode before giving anything. She wanted a popsicle a couple different times, but didn't eat much and then shortly afterward, it came back up. She has been sleeping on & off all evening & is doing so now & I don't know whether to let her sleep or wake her up & try to get something in her.

The flu shot is for seasonal flu not for H1N1. Is there H1N1 in your area or at your daughter's school? Does she have a fever?

she does not have a fever so far. I don't know of any cases of H1N1 at her school, but I have heard rumors of it being in the area.

When my son has been sick, all he ever wanted to do was sleep...not eat. He'd easily go 36 hours not eating anything, and it was ok. His body just wanted to sleep.

I wouldn't worry so much about getting food in her. Let her sleep...rest is what will help her body fight whatever it is.

Reason I mention it was because my son just went back to school today after having H1N1. He had a high fever for three days, 102+ degrees, bad cough, some vomiting, chills, etc. From what I have read, some cases of H1N1 don't have a higher fever.

I am no medical expert; however, the combination headache and dry heaves would alarm me. Sounds like more than a stomach bug or flu especially since there is no fever. Did she fall or recently bump her head on something? Good luck! It's awful to feel helpless when your little one is sick.

We all had something similar last month. The baby had it the worst and after 3 days of throwing up had to go to the hospital and be rehydrated. They said not to give anything for 1 hour after vomiting. At 1 hour they can have no more than 1 ounce of pedialite or gatorade. Those drinks hydrate much faster than water so if they can hold it down for a few minutes they are much better off than if they'd had water. They said if they kept that down they could have something to eat 2 hours after that.

Everyone else it was 24 hours of vomiting and a 2-3 days of a really bad headache. Just be forewarned it was highly, highly contagious. From the person who gave it to us to the end 11 people got sick. Up to a week after everyone in our house seemed better people got sick.

Did she get the shot, or the mist?

I was just, I mean JUST, reading on mothering.com's forums about throwing up being a side-effect, on the info in the box, of the flumist. Their doctor said it was nothing too, but it's been like clockwork, as soon as she lays her head down, for 3 days now, since getting it sprayed up her nose. Of course those on mothering know that we can report vaccine reactions, not just doctors...

I've dealt with dozens of stomach bugs here. Make sure she's getting about 1 tablespoon of liquid (preferably pedialite, but my kids hated it in all forms) every 15 minutes - really, no more, and no less (or else it comes back up). No food until she is feeling better - it just irratated to stomach. Tylenol for the headache, not motrin, which also irritates. I give my kids a bucket with a liner for daytime, towel on the pillow and on the chest, bucket by the bed, for nighttime. If she has no fever, it should pass within 48 hours, but with a fever, if it's rota (and you can tell by the poop smell), up to 10 days.

Hope she feels better!

She got the flu shot. She made it through the night without throwing up any more. She asked for a drink a few times during the night and wanted kool-aid. This morning she has had a few more drinks of the kool-aid. She is still complaining of a headache. It seems like it is more shooting pains than a constant ache. I gave her a dose of motrin around 8am, so she has kept it down about 20min. so far.

Food and motrin are the worst things to give a child with a stomach bug. My pediatrician told me that you can survive up to 2 weeks without food (when my twins had rota, and had nothing but water for 10 days). Popsicles are good, but don't let her eat the whole thing at once. Try to get her hydrated, in very small doses, and then let her sleep.

uuugghh, I didn't know that about the motrin!! i'll remember that in the future.

My oldest had a stomach bug last spring that should have been 24 hour, but even at 36 hours anything she ate came back up (even 1 teaspoon of pedialyte given every 10 minutes) Our friend, a nurse, said that if her blood sugar was low enough, it could be causing the vomiting at this point and to give her a lollipop. Because you aren't "eating" anything, the sugar can get into your system without causing you to vomiting again. I know it sounds crazy, but it worked perfectly for us - so if you think it was a 24 hour bug and not something more serious or concerning (like dehydration) then you might try it!

I would call your pediatrician...esp. since she has a headache. Our family doctor said that her office has been flooded with early cases of seasonal flu. If they test her and she has it, maybe it won't be too late for Tamiflu...I didn't catch when she started getting sick. I had the flu 2 years ago and really felt like I was dying but never really ran a fever...weird, I know. They swabbed me w/in 36 hours, so I got Tamiflu. I was still sick for over a week , though. I'll cross my fingers for you and pray for a stomach bug. :wizard:

The flu shot and other shots are able to transmit the actual virus. Your daughter could also be having a bad reaction to the vaccine, so keep a good eye on her. If things don't get better I would take her in right away. It seems very suspicious to me that her reaction started so quickly after the shot. Praying she feels better soon.
