My daughter will be entering her senior year in college. Today she went for a tour of her first choice college. When she asked about the Disney College Program, the admissions person said they did not participate. Doing the CP, and eventually working for Disney, has been her goal, yet this college is perfect for her in every other way. Any advice? :confused3 I tried to look for information on their website but found it difficult to navigate. I'm hoping to get some good news for her because right now she is totally bummed out.

Thanks for any and all help and advice.

I THINK that anyone in college can still do the CP with Disney, you just have to take a semester off and you won't get credit for it at the college.

I hope somebody can confirm this or correct it if necessary.

This is correct, for the most part. The criteria for eligibility in that regard is that the student must be currently enrolled and have completed their first semester of college (they can however apply during this term). Individual schools may have additional eligibility requirements which must be met, but otherwise, the opportunity is open to anyone actively enrolled in an institution of higher learning.

Full details are available here.

She wants to go to Nazareth College which is right outside Rochester, NY.

Thanks for the information. I really don't see why the college wouldn't let her do the internship. I guess they could deny her any scholarship/finanical aid money if she took a semester off to do CP and they didn't approve it.

Hopefully, things will work out. I need to show her this board so she can get more information. She has talked with many of the CP people in the parks, most of whom seem to enjoy the program. I even looked at the CS program, but I think for her it would be better starting college first.

Once again, thanks for the help. (csaribay- what a great blog. Young people continue to amaze me. Can't wait to let my daughter look at it.)

Good morning,
I agree with the previous posters: the college may not give academic credit for College Program participation (and many don't, especially if you're not enrolled in a hospitalty program), but they wouldn't care if you took a semester off to do the CP and wouldn't punish you for doing so. (Students take semesters off to do much less valuable things.)

If she has AP credits to transfer to college it's possible she can take a semester off and not lose any time. In the worst-case scenario she would just be delaying graduation for a semester.

Looks like a great college, by the way!

My college allows you to do it, but you have to switch all the classes around it, making it really tough.

With the co-op experience at my school, the academic credit isn't as hard to get, it's just trying to make it work with when certain classes are offered.

Thank you all for your replies. My daughter just had a reply for Nazareth, and they do participate in the CP. She can do it in her junior or senior year.

I would also like to add that contrary to what popular belief is, you don't have to take a semester off. There are other options. Almost every university, even a fair number of community colleges, offer classes online. Whilst I'm in Florida that's what I'll be doing. Even if it's just 12 units, it's still Full Time and that way there isn't so much catching up to do. It's a little bit harder to find concentration classes online, such as those pertaining to a certain major, but you can certainly get a lot of general ed out of the way, and I'm sure certain colleges have different selections. The name varies from college to college, but it's mostly known as Online Courses, Distance Learning, Distance Education, Online Education, or some variant therein. Hope this helps!
