I completely agree with you! This whole, "I paid for my seat early and I'm not giving it up" is ridiculous! I have flown every legacy US carrier, AirTran and JetBlue and never not been seated with my young child! We have even had a gate agent purposely put us in the exit row knowing we couldn't stay and an adult party of 2 would gladly take those seats for more leg room. We have had to fly 2 and 2 many times (DH and 1 DS) and (Me and 1 DS) but it was fine! I was going to post that you don't need to worry about it, Delta will take care of you, but I knew that all of these responses would show up! "There is no guarantee" "You should have booked sooner" "I paid for my seat" Blah, blah blah.
OP--Enjoy your vacation, and at least one of you will be seated with your 3 y/o, they are not going to seat her alone!
I have no problem moving if need be. But really?? Because someone else waited until the last minute to book 3 of the few remaining seats (which is why the fare was so low to begin with), and they decide that these seats, which they chose, are no longer going to work for them, so they get to have someone move that booked months in advance and paid a premium price for doing so??? Sorry I don't agree. I have moved in the past. But I'm telling you...if the FA asks my dd and I to move out of our middle/window seats to accomodate someone else, then that airline had either put us in better seats, or compensate me. I booked early to get the seats I wanted.
I know it's not the case in the OP, but let's not forget how often legacy airlines change flights/times, and subsequently seating assignments. So if I book a flight that fits my schedule & seating requirements and the airline makes a change and my party is not sitting together anymore (specifically if I have a young child), should I not raise a stink?
Just something to keep in mind the next time you frequent travelers are asked to change seats to keep a family together. It may not have been that families fault they got separated.
Absolutely...been there, done that. If flights/times have changed, then I am probably going to have been moved as well, so I will understand a family needed others to move. I have booked with Delta, choosing my seats, up towards the front because I needed to be off the plane quickly that one time. Then, Delta changed the flight time by about 20 mins and we lost our seats. Now, I am seated in the far back of the plane and my dd was in the middle of the plane! I called them, and got us two seats together, but it was in the back.
Okay...so then, a month goes by and Delta completely canceled the flight and put us on a flight that was 3/4 full. Now, you have to understand that our flight was also 3/4 full....so, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what is going to happen. When Delta made that change, it really messed up my arrival time, so I had to cancel something on the other end. But, when I called Delta to see if there was something else I could do, since that flight was so overbooked at this point, they put me on the flight I had originally wanted, but didn't book since it was double the fare of the flight I ended up booking.
So, I understand that families get messed up when airlines make changes. I just have a problem when someone waits until the last minute and books when they find a nice, low fare. And that fare is low because it's for single middle seats!! So, after buying their fares, they come along and say that the seats are working for them and how do they get to sit together. That is my issue.
