My Son absolutely loves Mission Space! In the past, I have endured Mission Space so that my Son wouldn’t have to go on it alone.:sad2:

I thought I would be able to bypass riding MS during my upcoming trip because I’m going in a large group and surely, I thought, there would be an MS fan in my party. Well, it turns out that NO one else in my party, except for my Son, wants to ride MS!!>:(

So once again, I’m going to have to be trooper, grab a barf bag and close my eyes!:(

Any advice on how NOT to get sick on the flight simulator to Mars which if you ask if more like a torture device?

Thanks in advance.

PS: How do I get my Sister (50-something), who is afraid of heights, on Soarin' ???

I always thought closing your eyes makes it worse??? The best thing to do is to stare directly at the screen--no looking to the left or right. You could also consider a motion sickness medication--inexpensive wherever OTC meds are sold. :)

ETA: Avoid MS for a couple of hours or so after a meal.

I can't help with MS aside from suggesting meds, I just hate that thing. As far as Soarin goes I'd suggest asking the CM in the ride to place you in the bottom row. The bottom only goes up a small amount (5ft maybe?). Tell her she can also look to either side & see the building walls, that helped me ground myself.

Mission Space: If you feel you *have* to go with him, don't blink. Stay focused on the screen. That helps.

Soarin: Don't. She's a grown woman who knows her comfort zone. If she's afraid of heights, pressuring her to do it anyway is unkind.

When MS opened I had a friend try it out for me to see if I would be able to handle it. He gave me the best advice and it has never failed me:

Keep your eyes open and don't look to the side. Just open eyes, straight ahead, the whole time.

There are disorienting moments in terms of eye focus (I have astigmatism and I bet that's a factor) and I find as I get older, it gets a little harder to "recover" my balance each time I disembark, but I've never gotten sick once following those two rules.

Motion Sickness Medication? I'll make sure to swing by Walgreens and pick some up! I already packed the migraine and cramping meds - something tells me I'm not going to be myself this weekend!

I'm afraid to keep my eyes open, but I'll try real hard.

Thanks... I'm not the kind of person who forces anyone to do something they don't want to... it's usually the other way around! :(

Here is my heights story with Soarin.

Momma doesn’t like any views if it involves being near a height no matter how pretty. Hates elevators that are glass. You get the picture. In 2002 (she was 70 at the time) when we went to WDW I really thought she would like Soarin even if she doesn’t do heights. She was very nervous but decide to give it a try. She rates in her top 5 fav rides at WDW now.

Aren't there 2 mission space options? One that spins, and one that doesn't? Would he be happy with the one that doesn't spin? You couldn't pay me to go on the one that spins....lol

Nope he prefers the Orange level (a/k/a torture device). I do it because he gets really excited when I ride with him and my heart is is full because it's a way of bonding with him.

HATE MS!!! As soon as the screen came to my face I grabbed my husband and said I don't think I can do this. Door was already shut tho and the poor father and son in there with us looked terrified FOR me!! I just kept my eyes wide open and stared at Gary Sinise praying I survived :scared: Never again lol

I am the biggest chicken when it comes to heights and I LOVED Soarin'. I even was in the front/top row. Almost freaked in the first 15 seconds but once I settled in it was the best feeling. Can't wait to try the new one!!

23 days!!!
:tigger:

I have no problem with MS or Soarin', so I don't have first hand experience. But I do agree that keeping your eyes open is a must. You just make your motion sickness significantly worse by closing your eyes.

My kids now love both of these rides, we ride them repeatedly (though we prefer MS green). When they were younger and a bit afraid, what I always said to the is "It's Disney...you're going to be safe. The ride won't literally kill you or injure you. You're going to survive. The worst thing that can happen is you won't like it" That convinced them to give it a try, because I think it helped comfort the fear. They realized that they'd walk off the ride with all limbs in tact. Once they tried it, they loved it.

I would recommend what others above have said: Keep your eyes open and on the monitor, DO NOT turn your head at all even if you are looking at the monitor (the lateral movement will screw up your inner ear leading to extra dizziness and potential nausea).

In addition you can get meclizine over the counter. Take 1 tab 1 hour prior to the ride. That should help reduce the chance of motion sickness... a word of caution though, it can cause some drowsiness and will dry you up (dry eyes, mouth, etc). But that's an option.

As far as your sister... take her drinking around the world. That should boost her courage to get on Soarin'!

By closing your eyes on orange you are destroying the trick that is behind the ride. It spins but you aren't supposed to FEEL that.

It's entirely possible that you'll find the rise to be a breeze if you follow the instructions perfectly. Don't close your eyes. It's impossible for the trick to happen (it feels like you are going into space) if your eyes are closed or you look away from the screen.

I get it, because I go on the big coasters at Universal with DS. But I have a limit. If your limit is just this one rode, maybe see if there's another ride to bond on? Have you talked with him about how it makes you sick?

I could never say that. Especially about MS. There are no guarantees in life and Disney isn't immune to accidents.

With normal simulators taking my eyes off the screen works well. It lets me feel how little we are actually moving. Looking around on soarin and the Simpsons ride at Uni is great. I cannot watch the plunge on Spider-Man at Uni.

But MS Orange is a whole different beast!!
