Hello from FW/WDW newbie

I have always heard no private watercraft allowed. I have seen an occasional private kayak at a campsite, but I have never seen anyone actually using one. Although I have not seen the rule in writing, I am sure that Disney does not want private watercraft in its waterways.

That is awesome! I presume you have read Bill Bryson's book A Walk in The Woods? If not, get ahold of a copy. It is hilarious! I have hiked parts of the AT, and have vaguely dreamed of a thru-hike. I hope you and your DD get to go!

I have read it and about a dozen others written be all types of people. lol Actually many of the people in the hiking community are against that book as his memoir is highly fictionalized. I don't know one way or the other, and really don't care, it is just amusing on the Whiteblaze board how some people REALLY hate that guy. I actually plan on writing my own book on the experience. I have been writing something that ultimately will be the first book, the AT hike will be book two. My daughter is going to do a hiking book for kids. A lot of things are lining up, some sponsors already and other things that I hope pan out as well. We are excited about it. I am a cancer survivor, so the hike is a big deal for me right now.

ROFL! No, I am not a hippie, although I guess if I was 20 years older I would be. My mom was a hippie back in the day if that counts. (And my DH often says my skirts look like something Stevie Nicks would wear, lol.) I do not play the accordion. I think that would give me a headache.

Hi, I had a few questions that I wanted to ask and it seems like this board is the place to find out anything on FW.

First, I have to say I have never been to WDW and at my old age of almost 40, I thought it was high time to go for myself and my kids, who also have never been.

I just hate spending money when I would rather be in as much nature as possible and not stuck in a room. For me, hotels are for romantic get-aways and girl trips, not to be stuck in there with 3 kids who want to argue over the tv channel. lol

I'm right there with you on being cooped up in a hotel fighting over the remote. Give me the great outdoors with plenty of roamin' room for the boys and i'm happy.

Hope your first visit to WDW Fort Wilderness RESORT and Campground is fantastically awesome!!!

My advice to you would be to purchase a guide book to WDW. We like the Unofficial Guide by Bob Schlinger. It's a huge help in deciding what and how you want to do each park as you enter. You need a plan to get the most out of your day even if just relaxing at the Fort. Good luck and have fun.

My youngest DD and I are planning to thru-hike the A.T. next year and she said we couldn't do that until we have done WDW, and that is how this whole trip began. LOL

It may be too early for my brain to make much sense, but I had to follow up up on your comments.

First, OMG...the hippy accordion player is NO ONE I know and if encountered I would have to walk quickly away, because my children and I would be in peals of laughter. If this is one of you here, bless your heart.

I have Birnaums and Fodors, but I will definitely get the unoffical guide. I am looking for those secret things since my kids are older and aren't so much into the small child things. We may even geocache in the park, that will depend on how crowded it is. I found that other thread with all the hidden things in the World and have been reading it nonstop for two days. LOL

Actually we are going SOBO, starting July 7th and heading home. I am pulling DD out of school for the time we are on the hike and we will trail-school. Most people start very early spring here in GA because you have to make it to Katahdin by Oct. 1st and even then the weather is already cold. We want to head home (we know what hiking in the south during spring/summer is like already and we can jump those sections we have already done if needed). I will have a Trailjournal, also a blog that I have already started and my facebook page, which will have a fan page so people on FB can track our journey too and not necessarily be my friends if they don't want to. We haven't really chosen a trail name yet, but are thinking about Pinky and The Brain.

Thanks for the advice about green Mickey ears. I think I have the perfect plan....also will work with Halloween decorations.
Which looks to be appropriate in late September? I think the kids would get a kick out of decorating our site, we really go all out at home, so to take a little with us will be fun. Plus, we are going to MMNSSHP after all, right?

Two more questions:

Do they rent small fridge's to campers? I do not have the room to bring one, and I know the ice will cost an arm and a leg there to refill every day. Just trying to figure out the best way to go here.

Also, I saw mention of a grocery delivery service there? That would be so great and save so much room if I could just order those things that I don't prepare and freeze at home.

I lied, sorry, ONE more question: do the sites in the 2000 loop have cable? If they do, do I need to bring my own cord/box? I'm sure my comcast converter will not work there, but my small camping tv is not digital. Hmmmm....maybe I should go looking for a new travel tv...sorry, I digress, shopping pulls me away every time.

Sorry such a long reply....I get wordy but I also don't get a ton of personal computer time and have to answer everything in one fell swoop.

Thanks Judy! Do you know if it is a coaxial cable or AV cables I need? I solved my travel tv issue, will have a small digital one within a few days....love Amazon! I guess I could just bring both cables and figure it out then. I don't care so much about the tv, but I know that there will be moments I am glad we have it (ie, tired 10 yr old who will need a nap but not want one).

Lastly, can someone tell me what the deal with clotheslines are? No clotheslines at all or just where they can be seen? Worried about mildewed towels, ick!

Thank you, TCD! I do have a long cable stored in the utility closet, I will grab it. The little tv I just bought said it will automatically pick up digital channels without being plugged up. Hmmm...I must be way behind on this whole conversion thing, I thought all tvs, whether new digital or old analog, had to be connected to something. Who knows, we'll see what happens. Go with the flow, right? (sorry, I often ramble, lol)

I won't put it where it is an eyesore. I have planned for less clothes and a load of laundry mid week. Glad to know comfort stations have them and it is not just one place. Clean clothes are good.

I'm beginning to see that. One of the kids remarked that FW could be our new camping spot for a while, buy passes to WDW and come there a few times a year instead of some of the other places we usually go. I am beginning to think they may be right, we'll never see EVERYTHING in just a week.

We have a TT but September - January it is DH's hunting lodge. LOL It also had a tree fall on it a few years ago and although it was repaired, it is not the same to me. It seems rattle-y (I know that is not a word, if there are any of those police here on this board) and just not as sturdy as it once did. I would rather stay in my tent set up now than that fiberglass claustrophobia-inducing coffin. A nice big new one is on the agenda...but as we are a cash only for frivolous purchases family, it won't happen until DH's bonus time...and with this economy that could be never.

Good thing I like tent camping, have a pretty good system/set-up and have almost got it down to an art. I do have to say though, car camping is so much better than hike-in camping in one major way...ELECTRICITY (for blenders, right?!)

I am so liking you people.
