Hello from FW/WDW newbie

Probably not. In fact, WDW in September may feel a bit cool to you.

I have always heard no private watercraft allowed. I have seen an occasional private kayak at a campsite, but I have never seen anyone actually using one. Although I have not seen the rule in writing, I am sure that Disney does not want private watercraft in its waterways.

Thanks...would hate to bring it and not be able to use it.

That is awesome! I presume you have read Bill Bryson's book A Walk in The Woods? If not, get ahold of a copy. It is hilarious! I have hiked parts of the AT, and have vaguely dreamed of a thru-hike. I hope you and your DD get to go!

I have read it and about a dozen others written be all types of people. lol Actually many of the people in the hiking community are against that book as his memoir is highly fictionalized. I don't know one way or the other, and really don't care, it is just amusing on the Whiteblaze board how some people REALLY hate that guy. I actually plan on writing my own book on the experience. I have been writing something that ultimately will be the first book, the AT hike will be book two. My daughter is going to do a hiking book for kids. :surfweb: A lot of things are lining up, some sponsors already and other things that I hope pan out as well. We are excited about it. I am a cancer survivor, so the hike is a big deal for me right now. :goodvibes

Hold on a second.

Are you a hippie?

If so, do you now, or have you ever, played the accordion?

Please anwser honestly.

This could be important.

TCD

ROFL! :lmao: No, I am not a hippie, although I guess if I was 20 years older I would be. My mom was a hippie back in the day if that counts. (And my DH often says my skirts look like something Stevie Nicks would wear, lol.) :hippie: I do not play the accordion. I think that would give me a headache. :rotfl:

Oh man, I like you FW people, you make me smile. :worship: It is my day off and I am spending it hazmatting the youngest's room. Not making me in a great mood, but Tri-C, you lightened it up. Thanks!

I figured serious hikers wouldn't be real fans of Bill Bryson. But, I have read all of his books, and I have loved them all.

I really hope your through-hike comes together and that you and your daughter get to go.

OK.

I thought my hippie-dar was going off.

Must have just been a false alarm.

You can stay.

Hi, I had a few questions that I wanted to ask and it seems like this board is the place to find out anything on FW.

First, I have to say I have never been to WDW and at my old age of almost 40, I thought it was high time to go for myself and my kids, who also have never been.

I just hate spending money when I would rather be in as much nature as possible and not stuck in a room. For me, hotels are for romantic get-aways and girl trips, not to be stuck in there with 3 kids who want to argue over the tv channel. lol

Thanks for any input! -Dawn

I'm late to the party again..

Welcome to the Camping Boards Dawn!!!!

What a great way to spend your first trip to WDW....at the Fort!!!

You're doing it right the first time! Nice! :thumbsup2

I'm right there with you on being cooped up in a hotel fighting over the remote. Give me the great outdoors with plenty of roamin' room for the boys and i'm happy.:goodvibes

Hope your first visit to WDW Fort Wilderness RESORT and Campground is fantastically awesome!!!

Oh and most importantly of all...

40 is not old!!! :upsidedow

Thank goodness 40 isn't old. I'll be 42 on Saturday...or is 41 the cut off for not being old? In which case, I'll be old on Saturday.

IOK.

Hippie-dar. :lmao:

You do know that hippies cannot be trusted.

She could still be hiding something.

I'm not saying she is......

just be careful!!!:hippie:

Happy early birthday!! And according to my license, 45 is still NOT old! :thumbsup2

Thank you and thank goodness...I'm officially still young.

He looks familiar. Kinda hot. :rotfl:

Really, that is one SERIOUS accordian playing hippie right there! :lmao:

My advice to you would be to purchase a guide book to WDW. We like the Unofficial Guide by Bob Schlinger. It's a huge help in deciding what and how you want to do each park as you enter. You need a plan to get the most out of your day even if just relaxing at the Fort. Good luck and have fun.
Love college football and WDW!

I whole-heartedly agree about getting a guide book...one for you, and -- oh, hey! One for your kids, too, would be a good idea...:rolleyes1

My youngest DD and I are planning to thru-hike the A.T. next year and she said we couldn't do that until we have done WDW, and that is how this whole trip began. LOL

Thanks again for the welcome and the advice, I am happy to get to know you all! :hippie:

Just a friendly mention that we will be expecting a trip report when you return, with lots of pictures. Sounds like you have the makings of a good one.

So are you going NOBO in early spring? Are you going to post to Trailjournals?

If you decide to post on Trailjournals, let us know your trail names so we can follow you. My nephew did a flip/flop several years ago and it was fun keeping track of his progress.

It may be too early for my brain to make much sense, but I had to follow up up on your comments. :goodvibes

First, OMG...the hippy accordion player is NO ONE I know and if encountered I would have to walk quickly away, because my children and I would be in peals of laughter. If this is one of you here, bless your heart.

I have Birnaums and Fodors, but I will definitely get the unoffical guide. I am looking for those secret things since my kids are older and aren't so much into the small child things. We may even geocache in the park, that will depend on how crowded it is. I found that other thread with all the hidden things in the World and have been reading it nonstop for two days. LOL :surfweb:

Actually we are going SOBO, starting July 7th and heading home. I am pulling DD out of school for the time we are on the hike and we will trail-school. Most people start very early spring here in GA because you have to make it to Katahdin by Oct. 1st and even then the weather is already cold. We want to head home (we know what hiking in the south during spring/summer is like already and we can jump those sections we have already done if needed). I will have a Trailjournal, also a blog that I have already started and my facebook page, which will have a fan page so people on FB can track our journey too and not necessarily be my friends if they don't want to. We haven't really chosen a trail name yet, but are thinking about Pinky and The Brain. :rotfl:

Thanks for the advice about green Mickey ears. I think I have the perfect plan....also will work with Halloween decorations. :thumbsup2
Which looks to be appropriate in late September? I think the kids would get a kick out of decorating our site, we really go all out at home, so to take a little with us will be fun. Plus, we are going to MMNSSHP after all, right? pirate:

Two more questions:

Do they rent small fridge's to campers? I do not have the room to bring one, and I know the ice will cost an arm and a leg there to refill every day. Just trying to figure out the best way to go here.

Also, I saw mention of a grocery delivery service there? That would be so great and save so much room if I could just order those things that I don't prepare and freeze at home.

I lied, sorry, :worship: ONE more question: do the sites in the 2000 loop have cable? If they do, do I need to bring my own cord/box? I'm sure my comcast converter will not work there, but my small camping tv is not digital. Hmmmm....maybe I should go looking for a new travel tv...sorry, I digress, shopping pulls me away every time. :tigger:

Sorry such a long reply....I get wordy but I also don't get a ton of personal computer time and have to answer everything in one fell swoop. :surfweb:

I am so very excited, everything I think about right now is WDW (and WWoHP--not gonna lie, it is what it is. Hi, my name is Dawn and I am a HP addict.) :wizard:

9 more days! :hourglass

All the sites have cable TV; but, you will need your own cable.

I don't think Fort Wilderness rents refrigerators. ???

Have fun!

Thanks Judy! Do you know if it is a coaxial cable or AV cables I need? I solved my travel tv issue, will have a small digital one within a few days....love Amazon! ;) I guess I could just bring both cables and figure it out then. I don't care so much about the tv, but I know that there will be moments I am glad we have it (ie, tired 10 yr old who will need a nap but not want one). :happytv:

Awesome about the grocer, thanks! That will save so much space and time! :cool1:

Lastly, can someone tell me what the deal with clotheslines are? No clotheslines at all or just where they can be seen? Worried about mildewed towels, ick! :laundy:

Oh yeah, one more thing (of course!)...what is kungaloosh? Should I come prepared? lol

1. Coax cable is what you need. The cable connection is on the utility pole, so depending on where you place your tent, you may need 15' or more of cable. You can buy a 25' length at most places, and that will cover it. I know you already bought a digital TV, but just so you know, you don't need to have a digital TV or converter box, just a cable attachment on the back of your TV.

2. There are no clothesline rules at the Fort. Do whatever you like. It is very humid this time of year, so you may want to prepare for using the coin operated dryers. There are coin operated washers and dryers in every comfort station.

3. Kungaloosh is the name of an alcoholic beverage that used to be served at the Adventurer's Club in Downtown Disney. It is the beverage of choice of many FW campers. Disboard member Fortwildernessguy has the official recipe.

Thank you, TCD! I do have a long cable stored in the utility closet, I will grab it. The little tv I just bought said it will automatically pick up digital channels without being plugged up. Hmmm...I must be way behind on this whole conversion thing, I thought all tvs, whether new digital or old analog, had to be connected to something. Who knows, we'll see what happens. Go with the flow, right? :cloud9: (sorry, I often ramble, lol)

Oh, I kept seeing comments about clotheslines and thought that must be frowned upon. No worries, I have pop up hampers and the like, just usually have a line somewhere for soggy towels. I won't put it where it is an eyesore. ;) I have planned for less clothes and a load of laundry mid week. Glad to know comfort stations have them and it is not just one place. Clean clothes are good. ;) :laundy:

Mmmm...I may have to find that. I have a feeling a week at both WDW and UO with just me and the kids will have me needing kungaloosh nightly.

Kungaloosh

1/4 Cup Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum
1/4 Cup Blackberry Brandy
1/4 Cup Strawberry Daquiri Mix
1/4 Cup Orange Juice

Add ice in a blender until slushy!!

Only by some...

For most Fort Fiends, clotheslines have become a sort of religion... along with green thongs...

ROFL!!! :lmao::rotfl::lmao: I see that the green ears are represented in MANY ways. lol ;) Love it!

I have known people to purchase an RV just so they can go camping at Fort Wilderness!

I'm beginning to see that. One of the kids remarked that FW could be our new camping spot for a while, buy passes to WDW and come there a few times a year instead of some of the other places we usually go. I am beginning to think they may be right, we'll never see EVERYTHING in just a week. ;)

We have a TT but September - January it is DH's hunting lodge. LOL It also had a tree fall on it a few years ago and although it was repaired, it is not the same to me. It seems rattle-y (I know that is not a word, if there are any of those police here on this board) and just not as sturdy as it once did. I would rather stay in my tent set up now than that fiberglass claustrophobia-inducing coffin. A nice big new one is on the agenda...but as we are a cash only for frivolous purchases family, it won't happen until DH's bonus time...and with this economy that could be never. :confused3

Good thing I like tent camping, have a pretty good system/set-up and have almost got it down to an art. ;) I do have to say though, car camping is so much better than hike-in camping in one major way...ELECTRICITY (for blenders, right?!) :cool2:

I am so liking you people. :worship:
