Heelys - Should I let the kids use them

Okay I'm old. what's a heely? :confused3
Sneaker-style shoes with little wheels that pop out of the heel area kind of like roller skates. :teeth:

I would say no as well since it is not allowed in the parks.
Thanks. I guess that answers it. I had no idea they are not allowed in the parks. It would have been terrible to be turned away when we got to the park. :thumbsup2 :Pinkbounc

You will see them being used even though they are against the rules. Sometimes the CMs will stop the child, but not always. I would also say that it is not a good idea.

Please don't!

There were at least five occasions on our trip last week when some kid wearing these shoes crashed into me or my parents. None of the kids apologized, but a few of the parents did. I also saw one kid crash hard on the pavement because he lost control. He was crying and bleeding and had to be taken to the First Aid center.

I didn't see any CMs enforcing this rule which is a shame.

Let me say this, I think it's quite possible that all those kids rolling around in the parks are part of a new advertisement strategy by Heelys ( ;) )

They were all over WDW in Feb. and when we got back from our trip my younger brother was begging for some himself.

Guess what (need I say $60 dollar sneakers) he got for his b-day?

:smokin:

They are considered roller skates, which are not allowed in the parks.

We were there earlier this month, and I don't recall seeing anyone actually using them...I would hope the CMs would enforce the rule against them as they can't be safe in those crowds!

Two weeks ago I saw two kids wearing these outside the MK. As they went down the hill in front of the boat launch, one kid crashed into this man and then the other kid, ran over first crashed kid and crashed himself. Screaming, crying, kids bleeding from the hands and knees. :guilty: No, I wouldn't let your kids wear them to the parks.

the problem with heelys at wdw isn't that the child may wreck and some may deem them dangerous; the problem is that they are allegedly forbidden by wdw policy. as frequent guests, we should respect that rule.

some woman at a grocery store let her kid use them and I nearly got whacked-I certainly hope I do not see them in the parks.

Never saw any CMs say anything (wish they had... but they may not have seen the kids rolling). However, at Kennedy Space Center, the Security person was really letting this kid have it. She made him promise not to roll anywhere and she wouldn't make him take them off. Of course, he was rolling later, but I was glad to see her explain the safety issues to him in no uncertain terms... hope Grandma who was there too made him where other shoes the rest of the trip.

Rub_shoulders, Fizgig rocks. :)

Anywhoo, I've seen them at the parks as well and even if they weren't against the rules, I definitely would never allow my child to use them. it's WAY too crowded, most kids don't have the control or restraint to use them appropriately, and you wouldn't want to have one of your children wipe (or wipe into someone else) and ruin a vacation. Not to mention I heard a couple of cases of verbal "crowd rage" where people would vent to their travelling partner that the next Heely that ran into them was going for an unintended heely off of the nearest mountain.

They were much more strict about heeleys...when we were at Disneyland last summer they made my DS pop the wheels out before entering the park...we didn't know they weren't allowed at the time....we see them all over Disneyworld now....don't thing the CM are really enforcing the rule...maybe just too many!!

I almost got mowed down by some kid on them the other day in the mall. I decided that if the kid whizzed by me one more time, I was going to get in his way so that he'd have to take a fall!

where is this rule "written?" as ds has heely's... they are his only "sneaker/tennis shoe" type footwear and i have no problem letting him wear them to the parks (w/or w/out wheels)...

he has had various pair of them for two if not three summers and has never "lost control" "wiped out" "crashed into anyone or anything" etc... he can walk just fine in them (w/the wheels in) or roll depending on his preference... but has not experienced any of the above issues...

i struggle to consider them "roller skates" because they are walkable, even w/the wheels in whereas w/roller skates you *have* to skate...

anyway, i'd love to find this rule... for my own curiosity and to show ds when i say no 'cause he's the kind of kid that needs proof!

gigi1313- I must agree my son has them also, and does fine. He also used them in WDW and never even came close to running into anyone. He has sense enough to not use the roller in crowds of people. However, he did use them for example when walking from the Boardwalk to MGM. We saw many kids with them, and actually had several people ask us where we got them, because they thought they would be good for their child. I think the real issue comes down to parenting and making sure your child knows when not use them and to be responsible. Walking down Main St. with a crowd is certainly not the time or place.
