I usually cant watch Seeking Solutions with Suzanne but tonight she had on Hedda Nussbaum. Remember, her lover Joel Steinberg(?) abused her and their daughter Lisa and ended up killing Lisa? The pictures they showed of Hedda afterwards made you wonder if she would ever look normal again. Happy to say tonight she looks wonderful and happy and has written a book about recovering from the ordeal.

That's freaky, I just watched a Law&Order episode last night that was based on her story and was wondering what had become of her.

I always felt horrible for poor little Lisa. Her dad abused her and her mother didn't protect her. She (Hedda) endured years and years of violence prior to the adoption (did it ever go through?) of Lisa. Why she thought it was a good idea to bring a child into the situation was beyond me.

Yes. I know she was a product of abuse, but you do anything to protect your child. She did nothing. That girl is now dead.

As for Joel, he got a mere 15 years in prison:sad2:

And Joel is out of prison, after murdering a child.

I have seen way too many cases of child abuse in my life (having worked many years as a pediatric RN) and I have NO sympathy for people like Hedda Nussbaum who do not protect their children. I think Battered Woman Syndrome (as a defense against conviction for child abuse) is right up there with the Twinkie Defense. Sorry, but it really burns me to see mothers get away with being accessories to murder.

The thing with Hedda is that MANY people tried to help her. She had MANY places to go in order to get away from The Scum that is Joel.

I remember seeing an interview with her saying that her family BEGGED her not to bring Lisa into the home. But Hedda did indeed bring a child into her horrific situation. That child was also sexually molested by Joel.

:guilty:

I hate to say it, but she probably brought the child into the home knowing what would happen. I have seen this happen over and over. Mom the "battered woman" or "innocent bystander" is often actually a participant in the abuse, if only to procure the object of abuse (the child). I consider Hedda Nussbaum as responsible for what happened to Lisa as Joel Steinberg. She has NEVER taken responsibility for what happened. She should do prison time.

She has NEVER taken responsibility for what happened.

Not even 1% of responsibility:sad2: I just read an older interview with her where she was asked "Why did you then try to bring a little boy into this mess?" and she said "I was brainwashed".

That was her answer to everything:mad: Yes. Brainwashed.

Plus, Hedda, you were free basing cocaine like it was going out of style:rolleyes:

I read that story many, many years ago. I decided then to refrain from judgement since I wasn't personally there but I do believe Hedda was psychologically unable to prevent what happened at that time.

Ultimately the story still turns my stomach for what that little girl went thru. I think the best that can come from it is higher awareness of abuse to perhaps prevent it from happening to someone else.

IMO.

That is weird Makua, I was thinking the same thing...I just watched that Law and Order episode. I had forgotten the woman's name though. I remember feeling awful for the children in that situation.
Robin M.

Thats rather harsh. Lets pray nobody judges YOU.

Well, I certainly hoped that people who abuse and murder little girls (or stand by and do nothing while their child is abused for MONTHS then murdered) are judged. We are talking about a crime of almost unimaginable magnitude, not about somebody shoplifting or jaywalking. Hedda Nussbaum procured that innocent girl for Joel Steinberg, then smoked crack while he abuse and murdered her. Forgive me if I judge her for that.

I just feel that she was a victim TOO. I remember the photos of her at the time. NOBODY but her knows what it was like to live in that house.
You are right, I dont know the full story, do you?

Exactly.

Don't you think being high on cocaine (a deliberate act) makes her a victim? Not me. Maybe if she had chosen to not use cocaine she would have been able to save herself and the girl.

I blame her as much as her husband in that childs death. They should both rot. She had legs and free will-she could have walked away at any time!

It must be nice to be in a loving, healthy relationship and make judgments on people in situations so bad that it is hard to fathom living through them.

If we gave "Free Passes" to all who were under somebody else's control, we would have many-a-criminal walking the street.

Perhaps Joel was abused as child. Maybe that is what lead him to molest and murder his illegally obtained daughter. Poor Joel. Don't pass judgment on him. He may have had a terrible childhood and that is why he did what he did:rolleyes:

Or, what about the local case that just happened in my area. A MOTHER would actually "serve" her young child to her boyfriend in bed so he could sexually molest her. That poor mother. She was most likely abused by the man that was raping her little girl. She should not be judged. She should walk free:rolleyes:

Hedda allowed her daughter to be abused. Hedda had many opportunities to save both herself and her daughter. Little Lisa is dead. Hedda and Joel both walk free. Wrong. So very wrong:sad1:

To your first comment, I don't think anyone says either of them should have gotten a 'free pass'.

On your second one, I absolutely think Joel should still be in prison. A bad childhood alone would not have created that monster.

On the third comment, there are many horrible abusive situations in the world and all have different circumstances. What happened in your neighborhood isn't the same as the Nussbaum case; you are comparing apples to oranges as all abuse situations are not the same.

I think where we differ is how we view Hedda's position. I have had family members or friends in my life that were abused and/or had drug problems and can assure you that those factors in addition to mental illness in some cases, led them to behaviors they would never have otherwise displayed. While those problems do not excuse their behavior, they certainly played a part in it.

There is a difference between justice and judging.
