What does this mean? We are looking at possibly adopting a rescue but the info on him says that he tested heart worm positive but is on course to complete the meds. Is this something that will be cured once the meds are completed or will he have continued problems from it?

Thanks,
Cristy

it will probably take several weeks of treatment, but I believe once the dog tests negative he is free and clear.....cured. I would ask them though how serious the infection was and what damage it did to the heart. If the worm infestation was severe there could be heart damage and maybe problems later from that. Make sure you get the full story before you adopt so that you will know what to expect.

We adopted a heartworm-positive dog several years ago.

Just had to wait until her treatment was over (2-3 weeks) and she tested negative for heartworms (2-3 days after that).

It will be VERY important to make sure your dog gets his/her monthly heartworm preventative AND that he/she tests NEGATIVE at her yearly check-up before you give the next dose of the preventative.

We've had our dog for about 5 years now, and no recurrence of the heartworms.

Good luck with your new addition!
