I am trying to lose some weight with bathing suit season creeping up on me. I just got "Just Dance" for the Wii and I am enjoying it. I also plan on walking once the weather gets nicer. However, I have found that my big problem is snacking at night and its always ice cream or tostios and salsa or cookies...so have any suggestions for healthy yummy? Post them here! :)

No suggestions on the snacks (other than to advise you that celery is a member of the plywood family - LOL), but wanted to ask you about the "Just Dance" for the Wii.. I've seen this advertised recently and I think my DGD (11) would enjoy it just for "fun".. Can you tell me what kind of music it has?

Thanks! :goodvibes

I'm addicted to Del Monte Fruit chiller tubes, so good, only 55 cals, 0 fat, it's sort of like a popsicle but a smoother texture as it's like a sorbet and it's real fruit. There's always popcorn too!

I enjoy it, it is all different types of music, ranging from beach boys to new kids on the block, Katy Perry, from the 50's to today (and they are popular older songs that she probably has heard at parties or on TV)
The playlist includes:
Fame
Thats the Way (I like it)
Surfin Bird
U can't touch this
Hot n Cold
Who Let the Dogs Out
Womanizer
Kids in America
HEart of Glass
Le Freak
Can't get u out of my head
I get around
I like to move it
A Little LEss Conversation
Cotton Eye Joe
Wannabe
Louie Louie
Step by Step
and there's a few more too

Its fun and i have done most (not all) of the songs and they are all pretty appropriate, nothing TOO provocative in the lyrics or dancewise , just good family fun lol. The rating says for EVERYONE 10+ for mild suggestive themes. My daughter (who is 5) was dancing with us the other day, she thought it was fun too. :goodvibes

Thanks so much for taking the time to type out that entire list - along with your comments..:goodvibes

Sounds good..:thumbsup2

I used to buy some of those 100 calorie snacks (crackers, cookies) until I got tired of paying the prices and now I just buy the snacks I like and portion them out into snack size baggies to make my own 100 calorie snack bags. :)

I also like sugar free jello with fat free Cool Whip. A whole cup of jello with 2 T. Cool Whip is only about 40 calories.

Fresh fruit (apples, pears, grapefruit, grapes, etc.)

Popcorn (no butter), pretzels.

Quite often I'll have a can green beans. 70 calories for the whole can. Put on a plate, pop into the microwave for a minute, then I use the 0 calorie spray butter.

I keep salad making supplies (cut-up lettuce, red cabbage, cucumber, tomato, red onion, garbonzo beans, radishes, hard boiled egg, etc.) in the frig so I can make a small dinner-size salad. Top it with some chunked up turkey, and fat free dressing.

Sugar free popsicles too.

I just got this as well and it's so much fun and a good workout.

I used to have a recipe for what was kind of like Ice cream sandwich cookies, only you used graham crackers (reduced fat), sugar free vanilla pudding (I used the sugar kind, because I'm not a fan of artificial sweeteners), fat free cool whip, and then rolled the edges in mini chocolate chips. I'll see if I can find the recipe to make sure I've got the ingredients right, but they were yummy!!

I love mini bell peppers! They are more crunchy than a bag of chips and so sweet and yummy! Dip them in a little hummus and you get some protein too!

Plain yogurt sweetened with a little honey, topped with some granola (I make my own, and use a combo of applesauce and oil to keep the fat lower than store bought) and blueberry's and peaches (frozen right now, can't wait for summer and fresh peaches!) My kids love this too and actually ask for it for dessert!! Shhh don't tell them it's healthy!

I'm pregnant now and all I want to eat is low fat cottage cheese!! Weird! I had forgotten how yummy it is and if you don't over do it, pretty dang healthy too!

ETA- found a recipe that looks like the one I used to use (just use the low fat/sugar free stuff instead of the regular). Only difference is that I didn't mix the chocolate chips into the filling, just rolled the edges of the little sandwiches in them before freezing.

pretzels or pita chips with hummus

string cheese

handful of almonds

I do this, too, but sometimes I'll use carrot. It gives me that crunch and dipping action I crave. A DIS friend suggested it actually.

I also will take a couple of slices of ham, lay them out flat, and top them with spinach, almonds, cheease, whatever, and roll them up like a wrap.

I have also bought some of the frozen veggies in a single serving and have heated those up as a snack.

Hmm..... trying to think of some others that haven't been posted.

My mom's special diet ketchup and cottage cheese sandwich. Take one piece of melba toast, carefully heap some low fat cottage cheese on top, decorate with ketchup. Consume carefully, before the melba toast gets soggy!

Raw veggies especially string beans. I buy 3-4 1 pound bags and snack on those throughout the week. I also like raw cauliflower and broccoli.

Life cereal- I scoop a cup out of the bag. They're slightly sweetened for when I need something sweet.

Mott's apple slices. They come in individual bags which are great for me on my train ride home.

I have never thought of wrapping almonds up with lunch meat, but that sounds really good actually! I try to eat a hand full of almonds a day, that sounds like a yummy way to do it. Turkey, almond, and swiss cheese sounds good! Now I just have to wait about 6 months until I can eat lunch meat again!

Nothing wrong with chips and salsa. Buy the baked chips and salsa is fat free. I say go for it.

I try not to eat anything at night, it is hard, but I am working on it.

Ideally, healthy snacks, should keep blood sugar up without unnecessarily spiking blood sugar levels, and tiding those hunger pangs until a real meal.

These are what I eat for my healthy snacks:

Sliced turkey & lettuce rollups (no bread,) with a slight smear of mayo or mustard. Sometimes I add in a slice of cheese. I love Oscar Mayer's "Deli Fresh" shaved turkey slices just for this. These can also be wrapped around a crisp slice of apple.

Celery sticks filled with cream cheese & topped with chopped walnuts or filled with no-sugar peanut butter. Or filled with Laughing Cow Lite cheese. I cut one wedge up into small pats and they either go on 3 celery sticks, cucumber slices, or strips of bib lettuce.

A scoop of tuna or chicken salad, or egg salad in a lettuce cup. Also dip in whole grain crackers or pita triangles.

Wedges or cubes of cheese, or string cheese.

A handful of nuts.

Sugar free yogurts with nuts.

Deviled eggs.

Homemade, pre-baked chicken nuggets.

Turkey hot dogs (without the buns) sliced up like Vienna sausages.

Can of refried beans topped with low-fat shredded cheese and low-fat sour cream, scooped up with celery sticks or lettuce leaves.

Hummus has become my best friend. I have hummus scooped up in lettuce leaves rather than pita chips.

Mini pizzas made on whole grain pitas, (instead of pizza dough, to keep the ratio of carbs to protein down, and the whole grain fiber,) with jarred tomato sauce and loaded with low-fat shredded cheese. These bake up quick in a toaster oven.

Nachos made with baked, stoneground whole wheat pita chips and smothered with chili and shredded low-fat cheese.

*** Make sure you drink enough water. It really does make a difference. Water lubricates the system and allows for better digestion and fat to burn more efficiently. It also flushes out the toxins & sugar. ***

I've learned there is a big, big difference between a "snack" and a "treat." Cookies, chips & sweets should be a small treat and not used to quell hunger pangs between meals.

Treats should be portioned out to a few sweets: 1-2 cookies, a few chips or pretzels.

I love a good half cup of sugar-free jello.

There are better tasting protein bars out now. Some are healthy because of the high fiber in the whole grains. Zone Perfect makes bars that taste just like a good chocolate bar but has a high percentage of protein. They are much better than cookies or real chocolate candy bars Zone Perfect also make fruit yogurt bars.

Balance Bars and Trader Joe's 40/30/30 bars are good too. They mostly have nutty flavors. You don't have to eat a whole bar for a treat.

Other sweet treats to have: No- sugar-added Fudgsicles, sugar-free Popsicles®, sugar-free Jello, drink mixes lightly flavoring water, and hard candies and chewing gum.

If you want mindlless munching food, I'd go with 100 cal bags of microwave popcorn or dry cereal (not directly from the box!).

DH is trying to lose weight right now - his biggest snack foods were always ice cream and cheetos so it's hard to get him to switch, but I've made him some snack items he's loved.

Almonds are great - I bought a huge bag at Whole Foods and made up individual snack bags for him to take to work. Whenever he wants something to nibble on he just eats them.

I buy whole wheat pita bread and put it in the toaster until it's warm and a little more crunchy - it goes great with hummus and low fat cottage cheese. Hummus is great - it's good for you and great to dip things like carrots and bell peppers in. If you're struggling with ther transition to healthy snacks, you could start with pita chips as they'll be more like regular chips.

I also make something sort of bizarre but DH loves. I take wholegrain bread and top it with grated cheese and grated cottage. Then I roll the bread up and cut them into mini pin wheels. It's a good source of fiber (the bread), you get dairy/protein from the cheese and a serving of vegetables with the carrots. It makes about five pinwheels and just a couple keeps hunger pangs away.

I have lots of healthy snack ideas. I usually (mainly during the Winter) will watch a movie on Friday nights at home. Movies aren't as good without something to munch on throughout :). I bought an air popper for about $15 from Walmart and air pop popcorn then drizzle olive oil and salt and toss. I'm not a fan of olive oil but this takes just like buttered popcorn. It's amazing.

I also get a stack of corn tortillas (the little ones but you can get any size or flavor you want). I get a pastry brush and a bowl of canola or vegetable oil. I brush the top of the tortilla with the oil and then stack another one on top of it and brush the top of it and so on. No need to brush the bottom as they get oil from the top of the one they're stacked with. Stack as many as you want (they keep for several days in Ziploc bags). Cut into triangles (or any shape you prefer :) ). You could also do this with flour/whole wheat tortillas. Bake in a preheated oven at 400 degrees for 10-15 minutes (until they're crispy) and sprinkle with salt. These are so good! Especially with homemade Texas Caviar (lots of different recipes all over the internet for this).

I make muffins on Sunday for the week. I usually try to change it up every week. Last week I made Earl Gray Whole Wheat Oatmeal muffins and they were so good!

I love pickles and eat them a lot.

I also love hummus but I tend to eat too much of it when I open the tub :rolleyes1

Ezekiel makes a sprouted whole wheat bread (you can usually find this in the health food section at a grocery store or at Trader Joe's) that I love toasted with honey and cinnamon on it (or natural peanut butter and cinnamon).

If I'm out I'll get a kid's size smoothie somewhere (those regular Tropical Smoothie smoothie's are way too big unless I'm using it as a meal) or a thing of green beans from KFC. I try to be prepared with granola bars in my car or purse but if I'm out and hungry and just need something to get me to my next meal these are my two fallbacks.

I try not to eat three hours before I go to bed.

Edamame is tasty for a snack/side/meal. My Sam's Club sells a box with about 8 smaller packaged portions. Microwave and sprinkle with sea salt (included) and it is really tasty and slows you down while eating.

If I really want to be exciting I will microwave them then toast up in a hot skillet with a little soy sauce, oriental hot oil and chopped garlic. It is salty, spicy and garlicy...YUUMMM.

My kids eat a lot of go-gurts (yogurt tubes). They also like them frozen.
