Does anyone have their own plan, not affiliated with a job? I need to find a better plan but I am feeling overwhelmed!

We got ours from a local insurance broker (same guy who insures our home & cars). It's cheaper than going through work, but we still spend more on our health insurance premiums than we do on our mortgage :(

DH & kids are on a Wellmark (Blue Cross/Blue Shield) plan that we bought. I don't know if it is available in your state. It is the most common insurance around here and everyone takes it. I just went on their website and got a quote, then someone there sent us the forms. We chose a plan that has a $3400/year deductible. Everyone's expenses count toward that one deductible. We pay everything up to that point, then they would pay everything after that point. We have never reached our deductible, so we have never actually used the insurance, but it is there in case of major expense. We can handle $3400/year of medical expense if we have to. It just went up and is now about $321/month. Some people like the plans that pay more up front, but I would rather pay a lower premium, which is for-sure, and some expenses that MIGHT happen, than a high for-sure premium.

We've always had our own policy. We have obtained different ones over the years when one got too expensive.

We buy our Aetna family plan through Costco. It's more for major emergencies, but it does allow us dental coverage and a no-cost well checkup every year before co-pays kick in. It's not ideal, but DH's work plans are awful and my school plan only covers me.

I switched to this Aetna health ins. offered by Costco about 1 1/2 yrs ago. It was a drastic cost decrease compared to what I was paying every month just for the privilege of being insured. Yes I am a big Costco shopper, so this might not be for everybody. It just made sense for me to look into. This also means that I pay for basically all of my doctor visits until the deductible is met, but that never happens anyway (knock wood). At least now I can keep my $$ in the bank if anything ever happens. The ins. doesn't cover in every state, so check that. My previous ins. broker kept pushing the health insurance account or whatever that was, where you have to open a savings account. That seemed like too much thinking to me, I just want to pay to be covered and that is the end of it. There are hardly any banks that have those savings accts., and they charge about $6/ mo. to manage them. I didn't like that part. For me, so far, this seems to be a do-able option. Good luck!

Hi I just checked out the Aetna plan through Costco and really liked it. It has copays for unlimited office visits, urgent care, and specialists. What I have a question with is does the copay cover stitches if I go to an urgent care that takes Aetna? I have gotten two different answers. Thanks

Usually what is done during an urgent care visit is covered by the copay, my mom has Aetna as the supplement to her medicare and when she went to the urgent care they covered her stitches under her $50 copay. She was not billed separately for anything that visit.

I have experienced her being billed for doctors that work in the urgent care but for some reason bill her for what is not covered by her insurance. I think the explanation was they work for a group that is apart from the urgent care and bill for the 20% that was not covered by insurance.

My DH has an HSA plan through Blue Cross Blue Shield (we do NOT have to have an actual HSA ACCOUNT with money in it..it is just set up where it could work that way), it is pretty high deductible, but only costs $185 month. It does cover a wellness check and did well when DH had some medical stuff a couple years ago.

I m reviewing all the bcbs plans and don't see any that cover wellness. Does the plan have a name? thanks
