Health insurance for the unemployed?

Agreed!! I never thought much about health insurance until my husband lost his job. Cobra is an expense that will gobble up unemployment benefits very quickly. My husband was very lucky that he found another job with great benefits within 7 months but we had to fly by the seat of our pants (uncovered by insurance) for that period of time. The good news is that we all remained healthy and had no pre-existing conditions to contend with. I will never again take health insurance for granted and I now have compassion for everyone who will choose to keep a roof over their heads, food on the table and live without proper health coverage. May you all remain healthy until we have health care for all!

Good luck finding coverage for your family. I hope your husband finds a great job very soon. :)

Cobra lets you know how much your employer was kicking in to your health insurance coverage. It is expensive to continue that coverage because of that. Temporary health insurance is affordable, unless you want cadillac coverage in the short term...

NH Healthy Kids is a great plan - it is really Cadillac coverage! I know several people who have used it, including relatives of mine. Even if you don't get it free because your income is too high (i am assuming the OP is employed so they still have one salary coming in) the sliding scale premiums make it pretty affordable.

Try Anthem for short term coverage. Just be careful with short term policies to make sure that nothing happens that could be considered a break in coverage. A high deductible plan will do two things for you - it will protect you from catastropic illness bills and it will prevent you from having a break in coverage. The break in coverage is crucial if you have pre-existing conditions.

Good luck to you - not sure what part of NH you are in but up here there is plenty of seasonal work available that pays better than unemployment. Not a great option but it will pay the bills and you are still eligible for unemployment when it ends. Even if the job is not in your DH's field of work, anything that pays more than unemployment is a good thing!
