Heads up - Halloween overbooked, Disney called me

Good! Maybe NOW Disney will see that campers like the Fort more than resorts and they need to expand :)

But also, you teally scared me away from crowded season haha.

I'm going a little off topic here :offtopic:

Your reply though made me realize something. As much as I'd like to go to the Fort for a Halloween to see it all, I don't think my anxiety could put up with all the activity. When we went to the Fort last year about this time for the DIS meet, we were there over the weekends as well as during the week. We've also done a couple of weekend trips to stay at the Fort. It's my understanding that locals typically fill the Fort on the weekends. While this isn't a "blanket statement", we definitely have found the weekends to be much more intense (kids flying through the loops on carts w/out an adult, loud parties all night, etc.)

This past trip we checked in on a Sunday and out on Saturday. It was a totally different vibe around the Fort during the week. Very calm and relaxing.

If we ever did that (Halloween) as a trip, it might be Fort Only with no added park stress.

We started going over Halloween way back when MNSSHP was young, IIRC it was only held 3 nights, then in 05 it went to 10 or 15 nights, park was empty, we could walk on any ride. No crowds at all. this was 04 and 05 & 09. Very fun times, then it started getting more crowded but the weather and atmosphere is just great. plus Food and Wine is going, we love fall at WDW. Now we are waiting until Halloween is past. We arrive 11-2 this year, should be "calmer" than the last couple spring break trips

Skupper, I hear what you're saying. But the 200 excess campsite reservations far exceeds 15%. And a snafu of this magnitude at the Fort has not been reported before that I'm aware of.

Another reason why I say, try to get there early on your arrival day if you can. Don't be the last one in that night when they are overbooked. Or say hello to PO for the night.

The Fort expanded? I LOVE it when you joke around like that!

But they should.

I think if WDW had any interest in expanding the camp ground, they would have in the last 50 years.
They have their reasons to not. It appears it would be VERY profitable but we must be missing something.

Your not missing much. I can fit 4 hotel rooms in the same space, then build up 5 stories. Thats 20 rooms. Sure there is a fee to build, but they get more $$$ in the end.

But...they don't need much staff, housekeeping, room service, security, etc. that's worth something

4000 a night vs 200. I can hire a lot of staff. Even so, take away 200 a night for debt. 200 for fixing up stuff and 200 for staff. And 200 for whatever. Still profit of 3200 a night. On a campsite, at best 200.

It also "looks" way different to open a resort than it does a resort campground. Even at the fanciest, a campground will elicit certain visions from non-camping people.

They just did away with free FP...everything they do will max out their revenue- not guest experience.

We are staying at the Wilderness resort and would like to go visit the campground on the 31st if possible, just to walk around for a little while to look at the amazing decorations and maybe grab a drink at the bar .
Would they let people in from the boats?
Our other option is Disney Springs, but not to crazy about going there.
TIA

The boats (WL/CR/FW) are not running yet. Just the boats to MK (which you could do but it's a little indirect).

There is a bus that comes to WL from FW (the Yellow bus at the Fort internal route) that drops at WL then heads back to the Fort (Yellow) route. So if you are staying at WL you can catch a FW departing bus.

Once you get to the Fort, you are either on foot or on an internal bus (no wrong choice there).

That's great information.
Thank you!
I will inquire at the resort About the buses

I wanted to update this thread now that we are back from the Treehouse Villas. First, they are a lovely place to stay. It was very quiet at night, although during the day there are lots of staff carts and buses. It didn’t appear to be fully booked, especially during the week. We put out a bucket of candy daily and had some takers, certainly not like the campground.

Regarding our promised access to the Fort for Halloween and how that worked out.. well I can’t say that went smoothly, as I feared. On Saturday afternoon we went down to the Carriage House to inquire about the bus later and were told there was no bus, only those displaced staying at Port Orleans were to have access, in fact our folio was flagged no access. The cast member at Saratoga could not help and suggested we speak directly with a manager at Fort Wilderness. Two of us hopped a bus to Hollywood Studios and transferred to the Fort to speak with the manager. He took my information and went into the back to look over our notes. He came back and apologized and said what were told at Saratoga was correct that we were to have no access and questioned how were even got there on the bus, because they were supposed to be verifying who got on at the parks (they weren’t). After I explained the few phone calls I got about the overbooking and mentioned that the cast member who called me the second time said ‘they were given new guidance’ when they offered me the treehouse, he said just a minute and went back and read through the notes again. He then agreed that it appeared that it was implied we would have access, because other reservations he looked up that day specifically said ‘guest agrees to no access’ while ours did not. I have to assume something changed after our call because in order to comp rooms we were supposed to agree to no access due to capacity issues, but I can’t say for sure. In the end he said it was a cast member error and agreed to let us have access on Sat after 5 and Sun after 3, if we drove over and the guard gate could be told we were ok to let in, as he couldn’t control other means of entry.

That being said, we came over later Saturday and whoa .. we have camped a few weeks before Halloween and I have to say we prefer it then. We walked from main parking to 600, 500, 400, 1400, then back down to 1600, 1700. Couldn't believe the overflow parking all down the main drag! Didn’t check out the beach bash happening that night. The decorations were fun, but it was just too crazy, especially with us having tent campers, had we camped. Too many people, too many carts, too much noise, too much stuff to navigate a rig through, a little anxiety inducing for one in our group. In fact I got vetoed to go back on Sunday knowing it would be even crazier, in favor of football. But hey now we know and probably won’t be fighting for that much coveted reservation next time. I get the hype though if that’s your jam!

Edited to add: We did set up the Blackstone outside and had no issues, it was great. On Friday morning we went to the Fort to get ornaments and walked in through the exit by the Four Seasons, while some in our party made a gas and grocery stop and came back to pick us up and no one questioned us walking through there at all. In hindsight, I should have followed up with the front desk and manager then instead of making the trip over Saturday to square things away.

We were also surprised to see at least 6 open sites when we were walking through.

I'm glad you got to get into the Fort and see what the scene there is like at Halloween.

The Treehouse Villa does look peaceful at night.

So I guess things worked out in the end. Thanks for letting us know how it went and providing closure to the topic.

PS - supposedly we've heard in past years that MagicBands were being checked at theme parks for Fort-bound buses/boats and also from Disney Springs to keep other WDW guests and locals from getting in (especially for ToT) around Halloween and overrunning the place. But as you say, they can promise it but that doesn't mean it happens.

And I will add, besides being in a cabin at Fort Wilderness actually at the campground, it's probably the closest you can get to camping without camping. The trees are so nice, sitting out on the deck, still being able to cook outside. A 2 bedroom at the main Saratoga buildings would not have been the same feeling. A dishwasher and full size fridge was nice :) We missed having the boat to MK and the water pageant of course.

We did see several RVs parked in the main lot. Two Class As, a Class C drove through the villas one day and a travel trailer was parked in the main lot, jacks down and unhitched. We were glad to not have the 3/4 ton truck with us, the parking is tight in the treehouses, a bus got stuck one day when a car parked opposite a long bed truck and we had to get off the bus.

I am sure they were checking Magic Bands on the bus on Sunday! Maybe they weren't on Saturday yet..
