so far we have been lucky and never had to deal with it
well at church yesterday i found out a few of the girls my DD's play with have it
I immediatly checked their hair and nothing but how long would it take to show is it immeidate or does it show after a few days??
Thanks

Great we leave for disney in 10 days
should i just buy the shampoo and do there hair to be safe or wouldn't that help????

as a hairdresser, if anyone comes into the shop, it shuts down....and we all get RID...I would do it now, to be on the safe side(beiing me,, I would problay bring a bottle with me to Disney:eek: )

I agree, go ahead and do it now! dd brought lice home from school many years ago. I used Rid on everyone in the family. Also wash her bedding. If there is anything else your concerned about (stuffed animal) but can't wash it, put it in a plastic bag for a few days to kill anything that might be on it.

If you have not actually found anything in your DD's hair do NOT put anything on it!! It's really important that you don't treat hair if it's not infected, as head lice can become immune to the treatments, plus you do not want to be putting poison on your DD's head for no good reason. The best thing to do Is wash and condition the hair, comb it through with a proper head lice comb. If no live lice come out on the comb, then don't treat it. If you look carefully through your DD's hair you will be able to see if there are any eggs. Chances are though, if no lice show up when you comb it through, there will be no eggs.

You do NOT need to wash bed linen, stuffed toys, or anything else, other than the hair. Lice cannot be caught from bed linen, stuffed toys or anything else. Other than direct head to head contact with another person.

i would recommend switching your daughter to tea tree oil shampoo, as it helps prevent lice infestation to begin with.

i don't believe this is correct. one of the ways that head lice is spread in schools is from clothing (hats, coats, etc) stored together in the coat closet. washing the bedding, etc helps prevent re-infestation after treatment.

I recently bought "Fairy Tales" leave in conditioner at our local beauty salon. It was 10$ a bottle, I spray my daughter's hair every morning before school. We had an incident with lice when she was in Kindergarten, and I would prefer NEVER to go through that mess again, so I am trying some preventative measures.
Have a wonderful trip, btw! I can't wait to go back.

jmmom, you are correct, lice does and can be caught within a small time frame other then head to head....that is why a hairdressing shop needs to be shut down ASAP. and everything is to be cleaned!

Fairy Tales? We also dealth with lice 2-3 times in Kindergarden with DD 6. She has shoulder length blonde (nit colored) hair. It was a nightmare to get rid of. Her whole class was infested and they finally had to decontaminate it and sent all the nap pillows (supply your own) home never to return.

Is the Fairy Tales a preventative? I may need to get some JIC.

Thanks,
Kalen

PS If the nurse hadn't told me I never would have known or seen them.

actually treatment should not take place till something is seen, the incubation period is around 9-10 days. eggs can be hatched within this time, and it can be spread thru clothing sheets ect. for a short period of time, that is why I said to briing RID with you to Disney, I was not kidding about that. better safe then sorry

One other thing, in my dd's school they learned that the girls with styling products in their hair got the lice less often than those that didn't.
I guess the film from the gels and such made it more difficult for the eggs to attach or something or other.

Lice love clean hair and clean scalps...its easier for them to move. I have been told several times to simply work a small dab of hair gel through my DD's hair. So far no problems...I also keep her haor up in a braid or tied back( its down to her waist).

we dealt with it a few years ago and it was days apon days and hour after hour of going through each hair on her head!

That's correct. Lice prefer very clean hair with no styling products. We went through this at our school for nearly 3 months straight. To check for them youself, use a pencil to lift hair up at the roots. You're looking for something very small and whiteish that will be stuck to the hair follicle. If it can easily be removed, then chances are it's only a bit of dandruff. Unless you find something, don't use any type of lice removal on the hair.

My sister had lice once. We did not know it. We used her brush and probably brushed her hair. (she is ten years younger than me) I even think my kids were around her. Thankfully none of us got it. I don't think you can get any more contact than we did. So I wonder if we were just lucky? We did not use the rid products either.

My daughter had head lice a few years back we tried everything. It didn't work. The doctor gave us a few ideas to try still nothing. Then my father in law (96 years old) told me that back in the depression they would use coal tar to get rid of it. Well that worked wonderful. Coal Tar can be found in Dandruff Shampoo. I think T Gel or Denorex has it. That shampoo not only killed the lice but made it easier to remove the eggs that hatch in 7-10 days.
I drive a school bus and when ever there is an out break I go running to the store to buy the dandruff shampoo to be safe. My daughter and I have long hair and I just don't want to cut it.
It is also safer to use than Rid, no poison. It was the longest month of my life.
Just a thought.

Thank you everyone i think i will get some of the dandruff shampoo as my youngest DD has some dandruff anyway

Head lice sucks. But do not use poision on your childs head unless you absolutely have to. Keep an eye out for the lice and only use a product if you find something.

There are many ways to kill lice on the head other then using RID or one of the other "poisions."

Soak the head with Olive Oil and let it sit for at least one hour. Repeat every three days until you see no more live lice.

Tea Tree Oil, add a few drops to shampoo, each time you shampoo. Or buy Tea Tree Shampoo.

There are also many natural products. If you can't find them in your normal store, go to the natural food store (or simular).

DD#1 had this when she was 4. The day before she had been at a BDay party--fun for me to call the mom and tell her she had to tell all the other kids' moms! I also had to inform her preschool and babysitter. One other girl at preschool and one other boy at the sitter's had them, so I don't know who had what first, but I know the preschool put the "dress up hats" in a bag for the rest of the year (this was April already).
DD#1 has very thick hair like me, so I took 3 DAYS off of work to comb through a section, pin it up, comb another section...then start all over again, until I could do it without finding a single nit. We were on each others' nerves pretty good by the end of those 3 days!
I had to treat her 1 year old sister as well, and treated myself as I thought I might have them but it may have been dry skin flakes. I know you can wash the pillows but we threw all our pillows out and started over. We also washed all the bedding on hot and slept on towels instead of pillowcases for 2 weeks--I'd wash the towels every morning. I did NOT want to go through it again. We also bagged her stuffed animals and Barbies for a week or two. Was I paranoid? Probably, but it was he** on earth.
FYI, some of my students had gotten lice from batting helmets--so if your little ones play ball, watch for that as well. The gel idea is probably a good one in that case.
