Heading down in March 2015 and trying to decide on which one to do. dd4 and 8, dw that doesn't drink, and myself that might have couple of beers. They work out to be the same price, and looks to be similar food.
If you have to choose one, which .?

Run this over on the camping thread and you'll have more input.

HDDR is fun-- never did the BYBQ, but I think it is outside under a pavilion. Might help make your decision.

We have been to both. I think with the age our your children the BYBBQ would be the better choice. If you want character interaction than you want to go to BYBBQ. The HDD is more of a dinner show, where the BYBBQ has some skits and music with characters mixed in. You are correct that the food is about the same. The difference in food is that it is served family style at HDD while it is a buffet line at BYBBQ.

We've done the BYBBQ 4 times & HDDR once.
I really didn't care much for HDDR but love the BYBBQ (all you can eat Mickey Bars!)

I haven't done HDDR but we did BBQ on Halloween this year and it was so much better than we expected! Was the food great? Well, no but it was fine. They had Yeungling in addition to Bud and Bud Light, which was the nice and the sangria was great! The character interaction, however, was fantastic. The kids loved dancing with the characters and then each one came around to the table for pics/autographs. Mickey and Minnie also met out front for pics and autographs, and Phineas and Ferb came as well. The only thing that was a bit of a negative was the trick roper, who cracked his rope very loudly on the dance floor a couple of times at the beginning of his first show. My DD5 is sadly scared of loud noises and she was done for the night! Even though he never made that noise again, she absolutely was terrified! DH and I had to take turns taking her out of the area. That's not anyone's fault, though, because she is just a chicken! I would still highly recommend it!

A very strong vote for HDD, the best show at WDW next to Cirque. it is also good for kids including the ages you have. it is a dinner show, indoors and thus no bugs (you can sometimes have lots of them at the BBQ). I find the BBQ to be OK but mainly just a place to have long lines to get food, another opportunity to suffer lines to get to characters, and music that is just OK.

I've never done the barbeque, but just did HDDR for the first time last month. We really enjoyed it a lot. My 10 year old son thought it was just about the best thing ever. I felt like it started off a little slow, but by the end of it, I'd almost peed my pants from laughing so hard. I highly recommend it!

Thanks for all the input, We were leaning toward the bbq, but i didnt think the characters stopped for pics or signing. Wife hates hates hates camping, so that is why we were also looking at the hddmr. Guess we just pick one this year and one next.
