Hawaii 2020 Questions? Bring 'Em On!

Amazing! Love these! Do you know the title of the song starting about 8:12 in your youtube video? I have heard it so many times and love it :)
Watching this has me so excited... it's a year and a half away but planning it will be FUN!

Not sure of your question since that video ends at 7:25, HappilyEverAfter80. :cutie: But the song/mele is, "Hawaii Aloha". Here's more info on this song along with lyrics in both Hawaiian and English. And there is a great video of Bruddah Iz, whose voice left us far too soon, singing it. What a voice....

Wish I could find one of my previous answers to this to copy/paste...

The Atlantic has a reputation for being rough, but according to a career navy gal that was at our table during the Sept 2015 sailing, she said the Atlantic is more known for "chop"/choppy seas, whereas the Pacific has a major current that comes down from Alaska along the coast well into California's coastline before turning back out into the sea. She said when you get into this, it can cause what's known as "rolling", which is where the ship sways side to side as opposed to bow to stern movement. If rolling motion does occur, it tends to be more impactful for those with motion sickness.

Now! Here's my experience having crossed the Pacific 3 times on the Wonder, once in September & twice in October. I didn't think it was bad. I don't get motion sickness. There was some roughness in patches over the days but didn't seem to bother most folks at all. My DD#2 has had terrific motion sickness since she was small & she was w/me on the Sept. 2015 Honolulu to Vancouver sailing. She started Bonine/Meclizine the day before & took it throughout. She also took some homeopathic motion sickness remedy. Late in the sailing we found out the acupuncturist in the spa could place acupunture/acupressure "seeds" (teeny round adhesives w/a pressure point nub) on her temples and around her ears (it was just a few total, very inconspicuous. She is DEFINITELY my fashionista so believe me, she would not have kept them on if they were noticeable! ::yes:: ), with instructions to press on certain ones if she felt at all nauseous. DD swears they were a HUGE help. The only time she had trouble was when we were getting about a day out from Vancouver. The F & B officer, who I have come to know, noticed DD wasn't at dinner and asked about her, he immediately sent sliced green apples and saltines to our room for her. That is apparently the recommended remedy (besides Meclizine) the crew uses. :thumbsup2

DD said she would do that sailing w/Pacific crossing again in a heartbeat! Unless you suffer from motion sickness, I wouldn't worry about it but go prepared. For anyone that DOES have motion sickness, check w/your physician, and take what they recommend. We are not fans of the scopolamine patches as they can make you super drowsy. For DD over the years, Meclizine has worked the very best for her.

That's the lowdown as I know it in a LONG answer to your question, FSUgirl! Hope that helps! :cutie:
Thank you for this! I don't normally get motion sickness so should theoretically be fine, but I'm also hoping to be pregnant on this cruise so who knows how that'll affect me lol. I've been in rough seas in the Caribbean where the entire cruise ship was sick and me and my friend were perfectly fine so under normal circumstances I think it sounds like I'll be good to go.

Yes, Kahului is Maui. It's where the Int'l airport is and the biggest town on island for sure. And yes, the 9 nt. should definitely be able to attend the luau, and the Old Lahaina Luau offered is AMAZING!

Nawiliwili is the port right at Lihue, Kauai. Lihue is the main airport city on Kauai. Hilo is on the windward/east side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Honolulu is of course on Oahu. :cutie:
Thank you for breaking down where everything is, very helpful :) The luau is definitely on my list that I'd want to do. I wonder how hard the excursions will be to book since most of the cruise is platinum and gold.

You should be fine then, barring if you happened to be in your first trimester. :scratchin

Hard to say about the luau. It is a large luau with a lot of seating & I would imagine DCL has blocked the lion's share if not all for that night. Luau are not cheap. I've attended the OLL offered and cannot say enough good things about it, especially if you've never done a luau I think it's pretty perfect! :thumbsup2 But I know when we are on Maui we pay right at $125/pp and that is with NO transportation. Our cruise in 2015 overnighted on Maui so I booked Feast at Lele myself and had a car rented for our 2 days on Maui. But without an overnight, I personally would pay DCL's price to make doggoned sure I got back to the ship before departure. JMHO. :cutie:

Feast at Lele, btw, is run by the same great folks that operate Old Lahaina Luau. It is a little more for the grown ups IMO in that there is no Imu ceremony (where the pig is taken out of the pit/Imu oven ), almost no local crafters to watch and/or buy from, etc. And it's table service. But it is also a Polynesian luau as opposed to traditional Hawaiian, so there are dances and food from across Polynesia. Both luau are outstanding IMO. I have done both more than once. :sunny:

Well I'm hoping to be pregnant in January or February so I might be. Oh well, my engagement cruise I was super sick and constantly throwing up and had an amazing time so I'll just figure it out lol.

It sounds really fun! My Fiance doesn't eat pork, so he might not want to do this, but it just seems like a shame to miss it. I always like booking cruise excursions for that exact reason that the cruise won't leave you behind.

I notice a lot of,the excursions are in small 14 seater vans. Does that mean there are multiple vans picking up or is this just a very limited excursion?

this may be outside of the point of the thread... hopefully not by too much. we are thinking of Hawaii for 2020, but more of spring break land vacation than cruising. Any suggestions on which island(s) to visit, assuming we would have about 10 days total. My close friend has suggested Oahu for Honolulu/Waikiki but I wouldn't mind doing something a wee bit less 'city'.

When I first thought of going to Hawaii I was considering doing the Norwegian Pride of America. It is a week long cruise with no sea days so you could see a lot more of Hawaii and then spend a few days before and after the cruise in one place.

If I were going (back) to Hawaii for 10 days, I'd split my time. A little on Oahu (Waikiki), plus a bit of Kauai and Maui.

Been there, done that -- cannot recommend them. Great ports and excursions, horrid ship and crew. [who knows, maybe they've gotten better over the past 10 years -- but in 18 cruises that is still the worst one we have ever been on]

If you go to Hawaii and spend any time on Maui, be sure to go to the Lahaina Luau -- just incredible and one of the original.

We have an Oceanview 9D GTY held. Hoping to grab a better Oceanview room with a Guarenteed Stateroom and one large porthole. We may be the only Silver in Board, lol.

We are also Silver and got a 9D GTY. Are you on the 9 night?

I feel so lucky to have gotten a booking. We weren’t even looking but I was listening to the Disunplugged podcast and they mentioned this cruise so I immediately went online and snapped up a room. Now I just have to talk my husband into going :p
