Obviously, as DVC members, we all spend much more time at WDW than most. I am interested in how you vacation at WDW.

We knew we loved WDW, and once we had our DD, we knew it would be a place we would go back to many times. Our vacation experiences have changed over the years, here is where we are at

97-2003

My wife and I vacationed to WDW a few times during this period. It was the first time I had been back since a family trip in the 80's as a teen; I was overwhelmed and blown away. At the time, we did not have our DD, so our first experiences were varied.

We loved DTD AND Pleasure Island. I remember we spent multiple nights in the Pleasure Island Jazz club. We played golf on multiple occasions and when we went to the parks, we WENT to the parks. Open to close - park hopper etc.... we didn’t stop. It was a vacation that you needed another vacation once you got home

2003 - DVC Members

On our trip in November of 2003, we decided to join DVC after staying at Wilderness lodge. We were impressed with everything, and felt the package was reasonable. We were also in the process of adopting, so we knew we would have multiple trips down.

2004 - 2009

During this time, we began using our membership in various ways. We sent my parents down for an anniversary trip, had family and friends stay with us on our membership. When we did the parks, we made sure to go slow, and go back to the room, as taking a young child for a full day was out of the question. One of the fun things that came out of this time was my wife and I would switch days staying in the room while DD napped. When it was my day to go back out alone for afternoons (our DD was typically down for 3-4 hours for naps - yes we were lucky), I would explore resorts or other things "outside" of the parks. My wife would spend her afternoons at the pool.

We discovered all the other things to do such as the mini-golf, renting bikes, fishing, or just exploring and enjoying what a great job Disney does with theming, landscaping, and creating an atmosphere of magic.

2010 – 2014 – The School Years

Yes, to the horror of school teachers everywhere, we have pulled our DD out of elementary school for a week each year for our vacations. For the most part, we have gone down every October for many years. We love this time of year, it gives us the opportunity to extend our summer by enjoying the perfect Florida weather this time of year, while our weather in NY begins turning cold and dark.

We never had a problem with this, as our DD has always been a good student, maintained her grades, and the teachers were always more than willing to give us her homework assignments. The flights down and back provided the perfect time to get the work done.

As our DD got older, we spent more time in the parks, but still took things a little slower. We always had at least one "day off" during our vacations just to hang at the resort, swim, ride bikes, have a nice dinner somewhere different each time, watch the movie, roast marshmallows, just take it easy. Even our DD enjoyed these days. Each resort has so much to offer. Also, we stopped doing the park hopper, we didnt need to do multiple parks each day. Rather, we would do a single park, spend as much time as we wanted exploring. And, we might go back to the hotel for a swim, or if everyone was on board, we would just stay, it all depended. One of the best things is the extra magic hours, when we could get those, it gave us more time to relax. When MK would do the late hours (or the halloween party), you could basically walk on the rides late. So, for those days, we might not even go to the park until 4-5 in the afternoon, and then just walk on the rides.

Needless to say, we loved going in October, it was the perfect time for us in all areas. My work really ramps up from November-January, so it was also a nice relaxing time before things got crazy!

2015 – The New Way

This year we found ourselves in a dilemma. I was not comfortable with pulling our DD out of middle school, especially her first year. We discussed what to do, and came up with ideas ranging from rolling our points and not going, to maybe doing a long weekend. I am not a fan of going during school breaks, we have always gone during “non-peak” times and the thought of trudging through the parks to wait 45-60 minutes of more for rides that we often walk right on was not appealing.

Our school district does not start until September 9th, and knowing most of the southern (and northern for that matter) would have already started school, we decided to go the week before labor day (booked Sun 8/30 – Fri 9/4) so we would still have the long weekend, and hoped the parks would be slow.

The Pro’s – We got our Disney vacation, and the parks were slow. We had no long waits and didn’t really need FP except for Toy Story Mania and Seven Dwarves Roller Coaster. The only time a park seemed somewhat crowded was Thursday at MK – and I figured people would get an early start to the holiday weekend. It ended up being a great time to go.

Con’s – I really enjoy getting that extended summer from the Florida weather in October, and I will miss not going to the Food and Wine Festival along with Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween party.

All in all – we had a great vacation, I am writing a trip report to post. I did not mind the heat/humidity at all; we did take a break in the afternoons and hung out at the pool which made a huge difference.

As usual, a great vacation, and for us, this may be the way we do WDW for the next few years!

Yep, things change. Glad you found it a great vacation and were able to 'roll with it'! Well done!

We are SoCal locals with a long history with Disneyland. Going to Disneyland is just part of life here -- you don't plan it or even stay overnight. It is triggered by a phone call, "Hey, I'm having a rough day and need to escape. Can you join me at DL this afternoon?" So, that is our "basis / context." From our perspective, going to WDW is 'cool' for the once-in-awhile visit -- but why make the fuss with all that travel? ;)

1996-2002
We visited annually for an IBM Conference at the Dolphin/Swan/Yacht Club Conf centers. At the peak (1999/2000), this conference drew 10k attendees and sold out in the first 20 minutes. We stayed at the Yacht Club, full fare paid by our employer. (Although, we sometimes didn't stay together. The employer chose the housing arrangements and sometimes I shared a room with another lady and my husband shared a room with one of the fellows. It was simply the rules -- if we wanted to stay together we had to pay half the room rate out-of-pocket.)

2002
I changed employers. My new employer paid the conference registration and only the 'cheapest' off-property room with a rental car. ACK! I survived only because my husband, still with old employer, was enjoying a room at the Yacht Club and gave me his hotel parking pass. Without that parking pass, I was doomed! A few months later both employers were bought out by a mega-corp.

2003-2004
The mega-corp employer didn't pay a dime towards our conference expenses. Gladly, my customer paid my conference registration -- but all our travel was paid out of pocket. We exchanged into BWV through II against our other timeshare and I started making offers on resale BWV contracts. When these failed, we bought SSR, direct, over the phone in the pre-opening phase.

2005-2015
Used our SSR points to stay at BWV
every year for our conference. Yeah! (We didn't originally have sufficient points for our needs, so please assume we banked/borrowed and traded in against other timeshare for a few years, as needed, to make it work.) We also used these years to add a night or two, on either side of the conference stay, to visit the other DVC locations at WDW including AKV Concierge for the Wanyama Safari experience (in the early years when dinner was served family style).

2015 -- the Conference ends!
Ack! This past January was the last year of our long-standing event at the Dolphin/Swan, etc. Oh, my. :(

So now we enter the "new normal." This year we enjoyed a weekend at the Poly for F&G and have a 1BR unit at the Grand Cal booked to celebrate a special friend's Dec b'day. If we don't return in April 2016 for F&G ... we'll bank almost half of our points into next year and figure things out as we go along. Gladly, we have our points in 3 contracts and can sell off small chunks if it seems best to do so.

I like the SoCal - let's go spend an afternoon, that sounds fantastic. We are thinking of places to move/buy once our DD is off to college. Right now we are calling it the 7 year plan. My parents own a home in Florida, about an hour from WDW. We like the area, but prefer to be a little closer to the beach, but who knows what will happen.

We also own at SSR, love it. Nice you were able to get in at BWV. We just stayed at BWV and loved it, great location, and obviously with your conference at Swan & Dolphin resorts - it's perfect.

I'm a new DVC'er but not a new Disney Fan. I've been going to Disney off an on since I was 7 years old. First with my parents and sister, when I lived in NY. I remember flying down, staying at a Days Inn (no disney hotels for us then!) and spending a week at disney. It was overwhelming, exciting, and yes, needed a vacation from a vacation (even for a 7 year old!).

In 1996, I went with my parents and stayed at a friend's rental house in Coca Beach. It was a 4-day trip, but still the kind that we tried to pack everything in that we could. Exhausting, but fun, but still exhausting.

Between 2002-2006 I went with my ex. We lived it up! My ex never been to Disney before, but one trip was all it took. We stayed at concierge levels in GF and AKV, and a regular room at the Contemporary. We went every other year for at least a week. We had a great time, but even then, it was exhausting and we had to take at least one day where we declared a "rest day", doing nothing but staying at the hotel relaxing. My last trip to Disney was in 2006 and by then, I was burned out going to Disney. Prior to this year, I had no desire to go back to Disney.

Fast forward to now....divorced, moved, picked up running to get in shape, found the RunDisney events, saw a special Florida Resident 4-parks for a good price ticket, asked my sister if she wanted to go and that's the end of that! LOL Between April and June of this year, my sister and I did weekend trips to Disney, hitting one park a weekend, with one weekend doing RunDisney's EEC. The second I set foot in the MK for the first time in 9 years, I fell in love all over again! I realized that my love of Disney didn't go away, it was just dormant.

Since then, I signed up for more RunDisney events, looked into DVC and realized that I could have my cake and eat it too! Living only 2 hours from Disney and having a flexible work schedule means I could take weekend trips to Disney and not feel pressured to do everything/see everything on every trip. Buying into DVC meant that I don't have to worry about having the cash on hand for the trips, and I am probably one of the few people who love SSR so I know that I'll almost always get a room (except for super peak times like holidays).

So now I look forward to going to Disney for 2-3 days at a time with a specific purpose in mind - RunDisney events, go to "this park" for "this reason", etc. For example, I went in June for Friday-Sunday just to go to HS for the Frozen Summer of fun and because I wanted to get my "Honorary Citizen Button". In a week, I'm going to GF for MNSSHP for 3 days. My plan is to hit MK during the party only, skip the other parks, and instead explore the Boardwalk (something I've NEVER seen), visit WL (another hotel I've never visited) and enjoy the accommodations rather than hitting the parks hard.

When I go in November for W&D marathon weekend, I'm looking forward to just sticking with Epcot and not feeling pressured to do everything else knowing I'll be back in January and February (and possibly April for Star Wars half marathon weekend).

So my Disney Vacations have changed in that I take a much more relaxed attitude and find I'm taking time to smell the roses - checking out the less popular areas that I only heard about but never experienced.

We are in the exact same place you are. My DH actually just brought it up a few minutes ago. We've been cruising a lot, feels a lot less crowded than WDW.

Buying into DVC meant that I don't have to worry about having the cash on hand for the trips, and I am probably one of the few people who love SSR so I know that I'll almost always get a room (except for super peak times like holidays).

We love SSR, I think the resort is amazing. I love getting up early and walking the grounds (and even walking through the Treehouse area). We just stayed at BWV, and I do love the location of that resort, but I dont understand all the negative responses to SSR. But, that's better for us, as you said, we know we can get a room!!!

I am envious that you can go so often, we get our once a year for the most part. My DW has run a few marathons, so she has gone down with her running buddies a few other times, she loves the Disney races.

So, OP, do you think you will stick to late Aug-early Sept for a few years or will you try for another time next year?

2003-2006- We took our kids to WDW for the first time in 2003. They were 6, 4 and 4. We wanted to wait until we were done with diapers, naps and strollers. We went in late Sept then and in 2006 because they were in year-round elementary school and had a 3 week intersession late Sept-early Oct. We didn't know about F&W or we would have gone early Oct and done that...actually probably not because Epcot and F&W wasn't our thing with little kids...we were more MK folks then. 2005 we tried Easter week and it was a nightmare with the crowds. 2004, we didn't go to WDW. We bought DVC in 2006 in order to have space for our family of 5 (condo style with a separate bedroom for us parents and a washer/dryer was the draw). We lived in NC and driving to WDW once every 8-12 months would not be a problem so that was the plan. We figured we'd stick to Sept until our youngest (twins) were done with elementary school. Their middle school would not be year round.

2007-2011- In 2007, we moved from NC to MD. No more year round elementary...boo. Also harder to drive to WDW so often. We thought about selling our DVC. We had 200 OKW points and wished we could sell 100 of them but since you cannot break up a contract we had to, either, keep them all or sell them all. MIL and FIL had gone to WDW the previous 2 Januarys and wanted to make it a regular thing for them so they offered to pay us to share our DVC contract (100 points for each of us per year). So, we tried to make use of our 100 points and our new traditional school schedule and tried many things. We did a trip with MIL and FIL in Jan 2007, a split stay for 9 nights with SIL's fam over 4th of July 2008... HHI in July 2009(so we could drive and not buy park tickets)...2010 off site stay in July for DDs' softball nationals...OKW at Xmas 2011 (with all the inlaws)...etc. In 2011, 2 things changed. We began to fly to WDW. And our 3 kids were 14, 12 and 12 and needing more space so we started to get 2BR villas instead of the 1BR villas. Also in this time my DDs began playing year round travel softball so finding time to vacation had become harder. Christmas was a good option as was August. we also realized we love Epcot and love to eat at WDW so staying at BCV or BWV was our first choice. We got the DP through 2008...after 2008 no DP (not worth the cost anymore).

2012-2014- With getting a 2BR and being able to fly (we could now afford to), we started to add on points. 2012 we added 75 HHI, 2013 we added 100 AKV and 50 HHI and in 2014 we added 80 BWV. We started to vacation in August a lot (did another Jan trip too). We did HHI, VB, WDW. We were trying out many resorts. We did another Xmas trip with the inlaws. SIL also owns DVC so we do many trips with the inlaws. We also discovered F&W and this coming Oct will be our 3rd trip in a row (sans kiddos the past 2 but with DDs this year). Disney started to offer the special AP or PAP deals and we bought in. So we found ourselves doing many trips each year to get use of our AP/PAP. We discovered the TIW card as well.

2015- DS graduated HS and we had a big WDW trip in Aug (split stay at 3 resorts). Afterwards, DS informed us that he'd like to skip trips to WDW for a few years. On this trip we stayed at AKV Jambo for a night that I booked last minute with OKW points. We realized that we didn't need to own at AKV to book there (AKV has become our fave resort). With resale prices being so high we decided to sell our AKV and make a profit. It sold the day we contacted the broker to list it. Bought for $66pp and sold for $80pp. DS, DDs and my PAPs are expired and we don't think we'll get another set. This last Aug trip was hot and crowded so we decided that we're now going to find off season times to go. I am going back to January. College kids have off through mid January so we will book that for our family trips for a few years (starting with Jan 2017). And then DH and I will do F&W every year. We'll use our BWV for F&W and our OKW/HHI for January and stay at AKV. My kids haven't stayed at BLT yet so I do want to try for there in Jan 2017 (and likely a 1BR for just the 4 of us since DS asked to skip WDW for a while). And I think we'll try the DP again so that our kids can just go do their own thing (and not have to be with us at TS meals to use TIW card). MIL and FIL are still using 100 of our OKW points. We have 305 to use for us. That will work for short Jan and Oct trips in, preferably, a 1BR for the next several years. Throw in a couple HHI stays (maybe in May or Sept). Not sure what our DVC plans will look like 10 years from now (kids will be 28, 26 and 26) but I am guessing they will change again.

We didn't do our research and ended up purchasing AKV, even though we live in the west and DL is where our hearts are (and less than half the travel time to WDW), because we bought into the "since you have an alternative school year and won't be travelling in the summer or xmas/easter, you'll always be able to get into the Grand Californian" line from DVC.

This turned out to be true from 2011-2014, but then our school district went back to a traditional year, and now we're stuck having to go to WDW during the high season (and have gone over easter the past few years).

We're pulling our daughter for a couple of days this fall to take one last off-season trip to DL because it's the 60th (although we have to spend extra points to stay at the GCH or DLH because VGC is full), but she goes into middle school next year, so the days of her missing classes for a Disney trip are at an end.

For the next few years, I think we'll either rent our points, or save up a couple of years worth at a time and take a longer vacation at Aulani in high season.

DW and I have always wanted DVC for ourselves, We bought in for our vacations and not for our young children. We have taken and will continue to do so, family and friends even on DCLs with our points.
Before our DD left for college she would go with us all the time. Then we became DVC empty nest travelers. Now we are bringing our DGS on most trips and re-enjoying some of the things we did with our DD.

We have almost always traveled to WDW during school breaks, even when all three kids were elementary/preschool age. We could have taken them out of school for a week back then, but generally we always preferred traveling during school breaks (except summer when it is too hot for our taste). Once we took them out of school (elementary/preschool) for a few days in October and I'm glad we did because it was great seeing the fall decorations and celebrating Halloween at WDW. Now that one is in high school and one is in middle school there is no missing school for vacations because they have a lot of homework and cover so much material each week, plus they do not want to miss sports and other activities.

One thing that has changed for us is frequency of trips. We used to go twice a year and now it is every other year. This is partly due to busy schedules and wanting to do other things, and partly due to not wanting to spend as much time and money at WDW as we used to. We also like Universal now that the kids are older, and a few days at US one year with 5-7 days at WDW the next works well for us.

Once our kids have left the nest I can see going once a year for F&W and then maybe every other year with our kids if they are still interested.
