having surgery - what are my options?

I have a 3 night cruise scheduled with my mom and sisters on January 19th. I found out today that I'm having surgery sometime in January - I'll find out exactly when in the next few days. If it's early January then everything will be fine since it's a short recovery. But, if it's scheduled during my trip or after then I won't be able to go. I can't go if it's after the cruise because I don't feel stable enough to travel right now.

We have 2 rooms for the 4 of us. I'm the primary person on my reservation/room and the reservations are linked. We are completely PIF. If I can't go, will they let me send someone else in my place and put them on the reservation? What does it mean for my mom if I can't go but she and my sisters still want to?

It's a short cruise and we got a good price. I don't even really care that much if I'm out the money - it's more important to me that my mom gets to go because she's been looking forward to it for so long. I gifted it to her and I don't want them cancelling the trip because of me. We purchased DCL insurance but I'm assuming you have to pay for 2 people to keep the reservation so I'm just assuming I can't get my money back but my mom still gets to go.

I'll also call DCL but I want to understand what some of my options are going to be going into it. Thanks for any information you can share!

If your mother is capable of being in a single room by herself, it seems that the insurance would reimburse you the amount of money difference that would be charged for a single cruiser in a room. Just a suggestion.

Even if I'm currently the primary person on our reservation? I wasn't sure they'd allow us to switch that after we are PIF?

The cost of the cabin will be almost the same for your mother with or without you, because the cost for 1 person is the same as the cost for 2 except for port fees. So one option for you is to simply not show up.

I would definitely call DCL to discuss what happens if you do that, though, to make sure your mother will be able to check in without you. You should also ask whether someone else can replace you on the reservation -- there may be a fee for that after PIF, if it is possible.

Insurance probably won't help if you're still paying the same amount for the room. It may help if you booked airfare through DCL.

I hope you can get the surgery in the beginning of the month so this becomes irrelevant!

Just fyi the only difference between the cost of a cabin for 2 vs. the cost of a cabin for 1 is port fees, which are negligible compared to the overall cost of the cruise.
