Having Issues Finding a New Phone --- UPDATE pg. 11

Okay, what is this new software thing that has been mentioned here. Is it an upgrade or totally new iPhone coming out in June? If somebody was going to get the iPhone, shouldn't they wait then?

That is the other great thing about an iPhone, if there is an upgrade, you just download the new version for your phone. No need to get a new phone. Free upgrades.

Oh wow, very cool! So this new 3.0 version will just be a download? Is that something that takes a long time? The fact that we'd be able to type in landscape is a VERY BIG selling factor for me.

There are rumors and pretty solid ones of a new iPhone model coming out. Apple keeps this information (including the date) pretty close to the vest.

Apple has released information about the iPhone 3.0 software. It will include landscape typing for e-mail. It's a good thing too, as my huge fingers hit the wrong buttons a lot. It is a free download for iPhone users. There are other rumors about what this upgrade will do.

The download time obviously depends on your internet connection speed but it prior upgrades (2.2) didn't take very long at all, measured in minutes not hours.

And while I don't have long nails, I do remember that when I got rid of my treo, I had to learn not to try to use the tips of my fingers, the flat surface worked much better.

Okay, so I am watching the preview for the 3.0 software now and am very impressed. Now this idea of a new phone model has me baffled. When is this supposed to come out (if at all)?

From my understanding....it will be a download available to current iPhone users.

Others are saying that it's a new phone model...which I havent heard.

There are several cool things that are supposed to be in this upgrade.

The one that excites me the most is that ability to copy and paste. My job requires me to share exisiting information with clients. Currently, I need to re-type this info each time. This will make it much easier and efficient to answer "business" email from my phone.

The keyboard takes a day or two to get used to, but after that it becomes very easy. Being able to "landscape" the keyboard will make it eve better.

We have a broadband internet connection and I find that the upgrades take just a minute or two.

I've joked around about this...but it's wonderful to have your date book, phone, ipod, computer and entertainment in one little device.

Just after my eye surgery, I had to be face down for a week. The iPhone truly saved my sanity. I loaded it with many movies and TV shows and could watch and keep my head down at the same time. I also used an app named Ambiance which is basically a white noise machine. It was awesome......I used it without headphones. I just picked the "noise" I wanted and laid it on the bed next to me. I used an app named Pandora. It'a an internet music app in which you create the "radio station" you want to listen to. I couldnt sleep one night and a Brahms station. (my classical musical knowledge is very limited...wasnt aware that Brahms had some ROUSING music in addition to those lullabys)

I guess my point in sharing this is to say....this little gadget is so much more to me than just a phone. The fact that it is a phone makes it that much better.

I love pandora!! Nikki, visit pandora.com if you want to see what it can do, than imagine being able to take that with you everywhere!

So if a new iPhone came out, I imagine it'd be super expensive. Would they still sell the old one (put it on sale until sold out) or immediately take the old one off the shelves?

I don't know what the pricing will be on the new one but when the iPhone 3G came out (current model) it was cheaper than the first generation iPhone. That upset a lot of folks.

Based on that experience, I would not expect pricing on the next generation to be significantly different but that is just my speculation. With AT&T being the only US carrier, the two companies make money from the 2 year contract requirement (trust me on that!) than the sale of the phone itself.

To answer your question, I doubt that AT&T and Apple would continue to sell 3G after the new version comes out. You might be able to get one second hand.

If there is going to be a new one then after they announce it they will just slowly run out of stock on the old ones. It will not go on sale. When we went from first generation to 3G iPhone, the stock just slowly depleted itself. I remember that they even had us with less inventory than normal (smaller, less frequent shipments) even before the announcement was made. It just confirmed our suspicions at that point.
I wouldn't think that it would be more expensive than this model, unless it had more storage space like some of the iPod Touches do. They sell like hotcakes at the current price, any higher would be too much, I think.

FYI, Apple WWDC (worldwide developers conference) June 8-12 ;)

I am undecided as to what to do now. Should I wait until June or no? I mean...uhh...err...should a friend of mine who might want an iPhone wait?

I wouldn't wait.

Everything I am reading about the possibility of a new iPhone coming out this summer is all speculation. Even if there was a new version coming out, it looks like it will be a phone with minor upgrades. For example, a 3.2 megapixel camera instead of a 2 megapixel camera (ooohhh!)

Remember, most of the iPhone's features are software based. With a new firmware upgrade (which IS coming out this summer), all of the existing iPhones will have the new features.

If I were you, I'd buy now and upgrade the phone's firmware this summer (which will be a free upgrade).

I would do but on/around May 10th. (Are you going on the cruise?) That way you have 30 days to return it if something does get announced in June, but you don't have to wait :cool1: Just make sure to keep your old phone just in case. IF there is an announcement AND you decide it's worth it to return and purchase the new one, it will most likely be a month or so before it gets released, so you could go back to your old phone till then. Make sense? Good luck :banana:

OMG Nikki - I'm :rotfl::rotfl2: at this thread...this whole thing was me yesterday in the AT&T store. I've got a phone on it's last legs and DH's is basically dead. He's getting an I-Phone, I saw what the bill would be from what we pay now and went :scared1:

I informed him that if one of us were to lose our job (he's in IT and I'm in cable ad sales) and he wants to pay the extra, don't expect me to cutback on cable or something just so he can have his phone to play with. He works in IT and spends all his time on the 'puter anyway...I can't imagine how much more time he'll spend on this

I think I'm leaning towards the LG Vu, I know it had decent reviews and the data package is cheaper and can be dropped if I'm not using it. Besides, I'm not sure if I want work knowing they can find me whenever and whereever ;)

If your DH is in IT and he does support on different 'puters at different sites, then the iPhone is PERFECT for him.

I did IT support for several years and had the iPhone in my last year. The ability to store information about the different systems I supported as well as the ability to look up information on the web when there are no other computers around to do so is invaluable!

As for what to do in case one of you loses your job, remember that you always have the option of canceling your contract albeit at a penalty. Unless you only have 3 months left in your contract, it is cheaper to pay the penalty than to keep the phone (and you get to keep the phone to be reactivated at a future date).

Perhaps the question you should be asking is "how long will Kevin be able to resist the new iPhone"?

I agree with Armand. I am glad I have the iPhone 3G. It is the best handheld computer I've ever owned. The phone part isn't shabby either. I can't imagine it working much better (famous last words). I find it hard to believe you would be disappointed with it. I'm not up on all the rumors about the features of the mystical iPhone 4G but so far, none I have heard don't impress me all that much. There's always going to be a bigger fish.

Now, I know folks who never buy anything without obsessing over whether "I should take it back for something else." If you are one of them, you might should wait. It's a big purchase and it is important for you to be fully satisfied with it.
