Have you noticed the change?

Although I didn't discover this board until early 2003, I have noticed that there seems to be a lot more threads started by users "sailing on date x, are you going too?"

As I write this, there are 19 threads like this on the first page alone...

Not complaining mind you (well I am ;)), but want to remind those that there is a sticky tread to post your handle for your sail date already:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=326949

Now if they use it for conversation, fine, and I enjoy reading the discourse, but it seems like a waste to reply "Me too!" While I'm on my broom, there are multiple threads started for the same "Roll call for the xxx date, anyone going?"

Oh - just making an observation...and venting just a little

Often the "me too" are fairly new posters. These posts often initiate private messages and enable the new posters to feel more comfortable posting to the board at large. There was less repetition of same date threads when the search function was still enabled. Bit grueling for some of us to search several months of postings to find if someone started a thread for a particular date now. I often cannot spend time on the boards for weeks. The list does not allow any give and take. Sometimes lurkers will finally join in if the thread gets active enough. The threads particular to one sailing keep a lot of drivel that others do not need to read from cluttering new postings. I enjoy the drivel, and will often send the "me too" a PM which then blossoms into a full participation on their part to the sail date thread.

Are they still taking suggestions for new boards? In addition to the DCL boards that exist, it might make sense to have a "Roll Call" board and the conversations could go on without affecting the general flow of the main board. I thought about suggesting it, but I find I just skip over all the roll-call type posts (unless it's mine lol) and read the other things I am interested in.

I happen to like those threads. It is a great way for DIS'ers to get to know each other before the cruise. Some groups are better at it than others. If it is date I'm not sailing or don't know anyone on I just ignore it.

"Roll call for the xxx date, anyone going?"

As a proud member of the 11/8 roll call - it sure got our group of 100+ DISers together due to the efforts of the wonderful "alisbarc" who initially posted the thread...and not only that...put together a newsletter to join us all together.

I went to your linked thread, and I'm wondering...you don't honestly think it is better to wade thru 45 pages of - "We're going XX" and "XX" do you, especially when the XX passed about 5 months ago? Just curious why the thread you linked would be better than what we have when it isn't harming anyone except taking up a little bit of space you can certainly ignore if you want. Call me crazy - but if I wasn't going ON the 11/8 cruise...I certainly wouldn't be reading it! :)

It seems to me that if someone can take up space to vent every now and then... than others can take up their space to say "me too"... and it will all equal out in the end. ;)

Well, the threads don't bother me one bit. Perhaps, though, Genie would be happy if on the Unofficial DIS Sailing Dates, there was a link posted next to the sail date corresponding to an ongoing thread for that cruise? Perhaps Genie would even like to start a thread which provides information and links to ongoing sailing discussions so as not to be bothered by repetitive posts? Or, just a thought here, maybe those threads that don't pertain to the reader can be what we call "Overlooked" for other threads that have information which actually interests the reader?

Good point...

Thanks for all the flaming support

I suppose I didn't communicate well enough that I noticed an increase INCREASE in this activity.

I'll not waste your time any longer!

Whoa there GenieDana!

I'll not waste your time any longer!

Too late for that...

JUST JOKING. SORRY. COULDN'T RESIST.

Your posts are NOT a waste of time. You wanna talk about needless space taken on these boards - read MY posts. "Opinions Without a Cause." lol.

In my opinion, GenieDana, no one "flamed" you. Trishy applied a bit of sarcasm, but she didn't "attack." You could have responded in kind, such as:
Perhaps Genie would even like to start a thread which provides information and links to ongoing sailing discussions so as not to be bothered by repetitive posts?
I love to stay and chat with you, trishy, but you're obviously late for charm school...

Remember, GenieDana, if everyone AGREED on these boards they'd be awfully lackluster. Take a deep breath. And if it'll make you feel any better, I'll lie and say I agree with your opinion concerning this issue... lol. (((((((((((GenieDana))))))))))))).

754 posts ago, I responded with a "me too" when I was planning my first cruise in May, 2001. It was a "spur of the moment" cruise, and we booked less than 45 days before departure. I needed all the help I could get, since this would be our first-ever cruise, and at that time, I thought it would be once-in-a-lifetime. I wanted it to be perfect.

Now I'm planning my third cruise, have been tagged by the Tag Fairy (thanks again!) and I still read all the "who's going when" posts.

It might be a nice idea, however, too have a board dedicated to these "cruise planning" threads. It would be nice to have even one more great board to read every morning!

LOL BD!!! Loved the charm school reply.... But, remember, not everyone is as quick with a funny reply as you are!!!!

Okay, I'll admit it..... I am guilty!!!! I started "The official thread for Sept. 21st Wonder"!

No, really, the OP is right... if you look at the first page on this board sometimes, the MAJORITY of it are similar threads... Since these threads are becoming so popular with upcoming cruisers, (Many planning DISmeets, etc....) perhaps we could have the Cruise Forum, the Trip Report board, and also a board for those DISers booked on upcoming cruises??? If you think about it, there are three cruises per week, so that would make like 36 cruises in the next 90 days alone. That is a LOT of threads!

PS: Just a note.... I have noticed that many cruisers do not find their way over to the 'sticky' thread and list their name??? It used to be something like The Unofficial Cruise List. But, since the name changed??? Perhaps a simple - Sign up for your cruise date HERE!

I agree that there should be a different board for these types...but I don't mind them if they stay here. When I went on the Halloween Cruise last year I met many great people and we all put together times to meet and our own trick or treat. I even met someone my age that I could hang out with on the cruise...and then I met someone who was not my age...but we still talk and have plenty of good laughs! I recognized a few people who slighty mentioned that they would be there and one was even sitting next to us at dinner (although we never found htis out until the second to last night.) and this year they are planning the same (although I won't be there I check in now and then to give advice)

I still think that they should do a different board...but if they don't? Grin and Bear it!!!

Search being perma-disabled is the main reason for the duplicates. Twice I've had to start a new thread for our cruise date, because there was no possible way I could search back through all those pages. So, since the search feature doesn't look like it will ever work again, I'd say that a separate board would be the answer!

I bet everyone has their pet peeve about what they like or don't like to see on these boards. Mine is vague subjects such as Have you noticed the change?. At least threads that start with "Roll Call for mm/dd/yy" or "Who's going with me - mm/dd/yy" are clear in their meaning.

Seriously, I've participated on such threads. One of my fellow cruisers started a thread back in February for our July 5th cruise. We were able to exchange information about excursions, things to do, Palo get-togethers and DIS meets. By the time we got on board, it was like we were all old friends and it made the week that much better. By keeping it in one place, oonly those DIS members who had in an interest in our cruise popped in. We created one thread with multiple questions related to one specific cruise, rather than multiple threads that could have taken up even more space.

The beauty of bulletin boards like this is that we have control over what we read and don't read. If you aren't interested in who's going on the so-and-so cruise, skip it and go to the next subject.

It would be nice if we could mold the discussion to the way we each would like it. If it were up to me, I would do waway with the prolifieration of "Docs Arrived" threads. But I can't, so I just skip them. I almost missed this thread becuase of the subject, but curiousity got the better of me :)

If you do have a thread going that you want to follow, and do not want to search back several (dozens..) of pages to reclocate it if it has become inactive, try saving the webpage of the link to your desktop. You can pull it up at leisure and add a comment or bump to reactivate it. If the thread stays active enable the email notification on your user control panel.

Sandy, you hit the nail on the head... I didn't reply to GeniaDana's first post, because I tend to be sarcastic sometimes, (who me??) I didn't want her to think she was being flamed.....

If you don't want to read the post, don't! go onto another topic. Yes, there are a lot of "who's going, etc." but everyone is excited about their trip.... I'm not going until January, but I still read Andy's 8/23 thread, because it's Andy... I don't like shrimp (Sorry, Rae, can I still be your best friend??), but I still read the thread because it's Rae.

I try NOT to read IGTD's post's because I basically know what she's going to post.

Some posts don't interest me, I move on. As much as I love the DisBoards and have made many friends, I don't read every single post on here.

When I do my daily check on our ongoing "10/11/03" thread I look over the most resent threads and sometimes even try to help someone with questions. Now that I have sailed 3 times I find I can answer a few questions (many of the same questions that I had before finding this board).
If the "who's going " threads were located somewhere else I think we would lose a lot of valuable insight/info from past cruisers who are doing the same thing as me.

If the thread subject is something I have no info about (for example, casinos in Nassau) or if it's something I have seen hundreds of times (for example, what movies are playing?) then I just do not read that thread. It IS important to SOMEONE, or else it wouldn't be there!:p

Our Dis group now totals over 100 people! By the time we cruise, there will have been 6 "mini meets" of Dis'ers who just can't wait to meet their new friends! On 2 past cruises meeting the people on these boards has been the highlight of the trip. I highly recommend to everyone who is sailing to make the effort to get to know some of the others sailing with you. It makes the cruise so much more fun!
