I read an article recently (CNN?), and others about food prices rising for Thanksgiving and beyond. It was surprising the percentages that were quoted. I haven't seen any prices jump as high as was reported. I'm wondering about it. Will they jump just before Thanksgiving?

I need to get some things now, anyway. Have you seen a rise in grocery prices? Are you concerned about the predictions of increasing in food prices?

Yes I have noticed within the last three weeks some items have up and up doubled. I don't make it a practice to watch the news ever, but did watch the blurb regarding grocery prices and the to be prepared for increasing prices for quite a long time. I so hope they are wrong!!

I have decreased our weekly items quite a bit. Most snacks are gone (always the first to go) and I am having to use my stock-ups more and more.

We are also doing a pizza special more often. It is cheaper than cooking. We do make a huge salad with what is on sale, but it is sad that the pizza place is cheaper than even cooking the "cheap" stuff.

yes, prices are going way up. milk used to be $1.89 at aldi, now it's $2.99, but still cheaper than the other stores. bread, vegetables and other staples such as flour and sugar have also increased. the PP is right...it's cheaper to buy pizza and add a salad. DH and i can make 2 meals from a frozen, great value brand, mega meat pizza and some chopped lettuce. we buy meats in bulk from sam's club now, which saves a lot. items like TP, ziploc bags, and snacks for DD to take to school (and for DH for work) are also cheaper there.

I have definitely noticed a big increase in prices. One price that nearly floored me was the cost of a pound of butter that was "on special" this week for nearly six dollars!!!!!! What?!!!! Seriously, they can keep it and let it go bad before I spend that much for it. And a pound of strawberries was five dollars at the same store yesterday. I know that there not in season but my husband likes them on his cereal and its the one indulgence he asks for. I still couldnt bring myself to spend that much on a little carton of berries. Last year at this time three dollars was the going rate for a carton. He got the blueberries and blackberries that were on sale instead. I also noticed that the sales flyers are getting thinner with more store brand items being advertised in them. Im definitely paying closer attention to sale prices and planning my shopping accordingly.

And yes, I have heard the hype about price increases. The fed planning qe2 has alot of people nervous about inflation the likes of which this fifty year old has not seen in her lifetime.

Butter $6 - what? I purchased yesterday for $2.59. Yikes

Prices are going up - scary. I have been stocking up on sale items. But produce is killing my budget! We are trying to stick to a budget and it is scary. It is cheaper to buy crap foods than to eat healthy. What a dilemna!:confused3

My advice? Shop the sales and CLIP coupons. Check out www.jillcataldo.com she lists the best grocery deals for the IL area but I know many of what she lists can be applied across the U.S.

Oh, and ALDI is increasing their prices left and right. A lb of butter used to be 1.69 there and now it's 2.49. IT'S JUST BUTTER! Target has it on sale for $2.25 this week, I'll think I'll get a couple to hold me over for a while.

I think the problem is going to be that even with coupons, going to Aldi's etc, they are forecasting the food prices to increase heavily, so a $1.00 coupon is not going to compensate for the increase of $4.00 per that same item. If Aldi's prices are going up, then so will everyone else sooner or later.

They are also stating that "sale" items will be a thing of the past and loss leaders will be far and few in between. Don't get me wrong, I said it before, I don't very often listen to the news, but this is what they are saying.

I have been buying produce and chopping it up and freezing it. I believe prices are going to keep on creeping up. I am stocking up a little at a time. My mom told me she wants coffee for Christmas! Heard something about the small cans going up to a crazy amount of $70 :scared1:

It won't get that high, but with coffee futures being driven sky high by financial speculators we are seeing an all time high on prices. BOO HOOOO !!

That info probably came from an article published on Nov 5 by the National Inflation Association on www.inflation.us. There was some really scary stuff in that article - it predicted about $78 for 11oz of coffee, $23 for a loaf of bread, $11 for an ear of corn, $62 for a 32 oz bag of sugar.

I am no expert on the economy and I'd never heard of the NIA before so I have no idea how reliable their information is. They could be kooks or they may know what they are talking about. I did notice that the bags of Christmas candy they were just putting out at Walmart seemed to have jumped in price quite a bit from last year as well as some other items that have increased lately. But I'd love to find out more about the NIA and if their information is reliable. Those prices seemed awfully farfetched but, ya know, even if prices only go up to a fifth of what they predicted we would be looking at a loaf of bread costing nearly $5, a bag of sugar costing about $12, and coffee being more than $15. That's gonna hurt.

I have started buying all my groceries at Target, with the exception of produce and fresh veggies, I get those at Sprouts or Fresh,n,n
Easy
Which r both super cheap for fresh stuff
Target has lots good sales on thanksgiving stuff today

coke products r 4 for 10 :eek:That is great" never see that anymore

Yes, we have noticed that the prices have increased. Gas has also risen as fast as the next tide too! Sometimes we shop at the commissary and the price difference is amazing on some items. We love Harris Teeters and Publix, and shop there since it is more convenient and has better organic produce.

I've been noticing the increases, too. Eating healthy is getting harder and harder. I usually go to Walmart for processed items, because they tend to be cheaper. Well I had to look at my receipt to check something and I noticed that the rollback prices that were advertised by the item didn't ring up. I got charged between 50 cents-$1 more on several items. I thought I was getting good deals, but I should be better at paying attention to prices as they ring up.

Which items do you notice freeze well? I'm thinking of doing this myself but I'm not sure when it would be a waste of time.

Watch for cotton goods to possibly go up a lot too if they haven't already. I read that weather and other issues have caused cotton itself to become quite a bit more expensive and while some middlemen and retailers hope to absorb a lot of the increase, they won't necessarily be able to handle all of it.

I heard the same thing! It's hard to imagine it could get that high. But I do get extras when I'm grocery shopping. Things I know I'll use. I watch the expiration dates, use sales, and coupons. I am trying to stock up.

I do wonder how high things will get. I did read somewhere that the price of groceries will jump from 10% of people's income to 40%. That's a scary thought! I don't know how true it is. But it does give a person pause. Doesn't hurt to stock up.

An 8oz bag of Kraft shredded cheese was $1.79, now the smaller 6-7oz bag is $3.99. Bacon was on sale for $5 a lb today for the store brand; it runs closer to $7 for the name brand. Milk is still $2.99 or cheaper, but prices have steadily crept up the last few months. Cereal (thankfully) is still BOGO often, but the coupons have decreased in amount saved or you have to buy 3 or 4 of an item now. Unfortunately, everything seems to be creeping up and the savings just aren't there like they used to be.

I went to get my grocery receipt in the kitchen so I was sure of the price.

I bought a gallon of milk on Friday and it was $3.34 for the store brand.

Wheat sandwich bread also store brand was $1.48. That is higher than a few weeks ago.

I mainly freeze veggies that I will steam anyway. I have been chopping and freezing zuchinni, cabbage, broccoli, and couliflour(sorry, can't spell that one!). I have a few different squash , acorn, butternut etc..that I am going to bake and freeze the meat for later too. You could do corn too, I just don't serve much corn because it's not very healthy.
