Have you had gastric surgery at all? Experiences appreciated.

I took my first shot of Mounjaro Friday night. I have been on Rybelsus (same type of medicine in pill form),for about a year. I lost about 43 pounds on it but the appetite suppression stopped quite a bit and I fell back into bad habits and have gained about 20 back. I heard good things about Mounjaro and like the idea of a once weekly shot vs a daily pill. The Rybelsus made my blood sugar so much better, but I’m over 300 pounds and need to get this weight off. I don’t feel any side effects yet. I’m so nervous but hopeful that as I increase the dosage my appetite will decrease.

How are you doing?? I am now on week 7 and lost 32 pounds so far.

OP here! :wave2:

Thank you to EVERYONE for the responses. :flower3:

After thinking more about it, I decided to try Wegovy first, before/in place of surgery. I had a doctor appointment already scheduled for the end April, and my doctor was fully onboard with it. I knew he would be because of how my weight has gone up and up and up in the last 20 years. :sad2: My insurance is covering it, and I took my first injection 3 days ago. 💉

So far, no negative effects, but it’s the very lowest dose. I will keep updating this thread, if anyone is interested. :surfweb:

Thank you again, everyone! :thanks::disrocks:
That's great! My insurance wouldn't cover it and I would've had to stop some medications for seizures/migraines, so it was cost prohibitive for me.

Best of luck!

Is Mounjaro/ Wegovy/whatever generic name something you are on "for life" or do you come off it once you lose the weight? Is the idea that you are supposed to fine tune (if applicable) your eating habits while on it so that when you come off of it you do not gain the weight back?
If you are using it for weight loss as opposed to diabetes, there may be an end point, or a lowered dosage at some point, once the desired weight loss is achieved.
According to the Mounjaro website, it's only for those with type 2 diabetes. Is this true, or are doctors prescribing it "off label?"
Right now it is just approved by the FDA for diabetes, but they are working on approving it for weight loss in overweight and obese adults. Excess weight can create health issues like diabetes can.

This criteria is for Ozempic:

According to the FDA, individuals with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or above who have at least one weight-related disease or those with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater might be prescribed Ozempic 2.4 mg once weekly for weight loss.

But like with weight loss surgery, it behooves users to make healthy food choices, exercise, and all that, in order to sustain the weight loss. If they come off it and go back to old habits, weight gain can occur again. I guess the question is whether people stay on it at low dose to continue to have less desire to eat.

It is off label but expected to be approved for weight loss soon.

I gained 40 pounds during COVID. Not normal at all for me. I've always been thin and able to maintain my weight. I have had reasonable successes with mountjaro. I do not have cravings and feel full after a small meal. My weight loss has averaged 5-7 pounds a month and I am satisfied. Exercise and diet didn't move the scale downwards one iota. I'm at an age were limited mobile affects exercise and the extra weight is a negative with my cholesterol and blood pressure. So yeah...doing what it takes.

Maintenance doses may be required Although it has helped my with my eating habits so we will see....

First, I wish I could give a hug to each and every one of you. Your bodies are perfect no matter what your size.

Second, I am filled with self-loathing over my body even though my life partner loves me just the way I am.

Third, if I am unable to keep off the weight after I turn 50, I will save up for surgery.

Unfortunately, I know that being heavy does have associated health risks. Five years ago I was .1 from being diagnosed with Type II diabetes. I got terrified and started walking and doing a Keto diet. I lost 70 pounds in about a year. Then I went off Keto and my weight started to creep up. One excuse or another and I'm still a negative 20 but unhappy. So, I've started walking out again and lifting weights a little and cutting back on portions and desserts. I'm making small goals for myself: 10 pounds before my cruise this summer, another 10 before Christmas, etc. I am going to ask my doctor about shots.

I would find a weight loss clinic that is dispensing these meds in your area. It is often much cheaper than filling an RX at your pharmacy.
