Has anyone ever watched a shuttle launch from the fort? There is one schedualed for October 14 at 10:00 pm while we are there and would like to see this. Is it possible to see it from the fort or should we drive somewhere closer? THANKS

It will be spectacular from the FtW beach. If you drive closer, you will end up in a snarl of traffic for hours. You will see it just fine from the Fort.
Have seen launches 2x just by accident, we weren't even looking for it. Once in 1997 from a WDW bus window, and once in 2005 at MK - Toontown to be precise. Okay, we didn't actually see the "LAUNCH" perse, but you couldn't mistake what it was in the air.
If the shuttlle is on sunday, monday, or thursday you could drive to port canaverale watch the ships, shuttle, and have a lunch or dinner at one of the great resturants at the port, we like grills resturant but there are many. Get there early. ENJOY

IMHO I think seeing the shuttle further away is better. Last year I was testing the power plant directly across from the launch pad and it wasn't as exciting watching it go straight up. We saw it a couple years ago when we were at Arabian Nights and it was much better from there.
I remember being there one time when the shuttle went up and was at Hollywood studios but i was not able to see it. However when i lived on the west coast of Florida in 1986 my family was visiting after the birth of my second child and we excitedly watched the launch of the ill fated Challenger. That was horrible and you could see that smoke and cloud in the sky for hours. You could even see the shuttle (although faint) that day as it took off.
We saw a nighttime launch in June, '07. My husband did some research online and decided the place to watch it from was in Epcot World Showcase over the lake. The cool thing was that other people must have researched it, too, because there was a little group of people waiting on the patio for the shuttle launch with us (while we ate Epcot treats...yum!). Being with other people that were excited about the launch, too, made it more fun for us. I put a picture of it up in my family room!
BTW, one guy there said the traffic to get to Cape Canaveral is nasty when there's a launch, and recommended that if you really want to be near it, get a hotel room somewhere close by. But, be forewarned that launches are often delayed at the last minute, and it might not take off until after your WDW trip is over.

I think you have been inhaling too much of that soot from those stacks dude!
I have been very lucky and have a friend that works for Lockheed who if I remember, builds the rocket launchers for the SHuttle, and we were given special passes for several launches. We got to go where the press gets to go and I will tell you this...there is nothing like the sound and the sight of watching the Shuttle take off from being right there. It is truly incredible. I have video of them and when played through a surrond sound system you would think the house is taking off.
If you ever have the opportunity to go watch a lift off I would suggest you take it. You won't regret it.
My MIL lives in Melbourne Beach and they watch it from the beach. They say it's a spectacular view. If it's delayed long enough this time, maybe we can see it!
