Have you ever negotiated a more flexible work schedule?

Due to health problems, I am considering speaking with my boss about taking half hour lunches instead of an hour and then working just 9-1 one day per week. I'd be missing 6 hrs per week and they can adjust my salary accordingly. With proper time management and utilizing the skills of my asst., this can be done with no problem. Just wondering if anyone has done this in a place where this has never been done before? My other thought is to work from home 1-2 days per week....the work I do CAN be done that way, just not sure he'd be open to it.
Thanks!

Oooops....sorry, that will only take ONE hour away from my work each week, not 6!!

At my work there is a company policy and a written AWA (Alternate work arrangement). I work for a very large company though, and I know not all of them do this. I do currently work an adjusted schedule due to my young child.

It can't hurt to ask....unless you need to be at the office to perform a certain function at a certain time I think anything's possible. You may need to provide "need" but perhaps just a note from your Dr.

Good luck.

DW did it not long after DS was born -- she cut her days from 5 to 3, and her salary was cut accordingly (60%). In her case, it meant dropping a client or two and focusing her energy on those clients, but because of her profession, it still meant working long (60-70 hours) weeks during her busy time.

Yes I have - twice.. When I worked for the doctor (medical records clerk) and I whipped the records dept. into what it SHOULD have been prior to my arrival - there simply wasn't enough work to maintain a full-time schedule.. So, I approached the doctor with the idea of me working from 7 a.m. to "whenever" my work was done (usually around 12:30 p.m.) and she also allowed me to not come in at all on many, many Fridays..

On another occasion (due to DH's doctor appts. and such) I was able to negotiate a 5-day work week to a 3 day work week..

Wouldn't hurt to ask.. I say go for it! ;)

i agree that it doesn't hurt to ask. my employer is very flexible about that kind of thing. i'm on an alternative schedule now because i'm going to get my master's degree.

I originally was working 8:00-4:00, but when I got married and moved further away I asked to change to 7:30-3:30. Not really a big deal, but it really helped to avoid traffic on 2 very busy highways. They had no problem with that. Then when I was getting ready to return after my maternity leave I decided I couldnt work full time anymore. I asked to work Mon-Wed instead of Mon-Fri. My boss's boss's reply was, "If anyone can do 5 days work in 3 days, its her", so they had no problem with it. Of course, I went from full time salary to part time hourly, but that was expected.
Id give it a try. The worst they can say is no. :D

I totally agree that it's worth asking for! If this job can't accommodate you, maybe another can.

After being a SAHM for 6 years, I went back to work for someone I worked with many years before and, it was agreed that I have a school schedule (for my kids). It's been IDEAL for me and, hopefully for him as well! ;) I have one more week until 'School's Out' and, I start my own summer vacation. :p Meanwhile, my boss is at USF/IOA this week with his family, while I man the fort. ;)

Best wishes!! :sunny:

I had changed my starting hours a few times in my last job. My boss was kind enough to work with me and generally didn't mind what my hours were as long as the work was getting done. I still worked 40 hours, but I was in much earlier and out much earlier. Yipee! :Pinkbounc Hated starting at 7:30, but loved leaving at 4:00.

I did.. after DD started school I started leaving at 230 one day a week to pick her up, later that also became soccer practice day so I can kill 2 birds with one stone. I'm paid hourly anyway and there are PLENTY of opportunities to make up the hours... so as long as no customers are griping it's no biggie. It's actually on the company master calendar every thursday has a 230 entry for "Alex- Soccer practice" :)

I did when started kindergarten. I had been working 40+ hours a week and decided I wanted to be the one dropping my son off at school and picking him up. I approached my boss and she was very open to my suggestion. I basically started at 9 and left at 3, skipped my lunch hour and ate while I worked at my desk and if need be I would take work home to do after DS was in bed. I lost some of my hours, but the time spent with my son was well worth the changes. I agree, it can't hurt to ask, good luck I hope it all works out for you.
