Have you ever heard of this? Post # 173 Test results, she is better!

Penny -- You and your daughter are in my thoughts and prayers today. I am hoping you'll post an update and that a quick diagnosis will permit immediate aggressive treatment for your sweet girl. (BTW, I never had a sore throat until the abscess was very bad.)

I would consider taking her into the best Children's or pediatric hospital in your area for a full evaluative work up and many specialists on hand who work together. Best wishes. :flower3:

I would check in to yaz, I think I just saw some kind of recall on that birthcontrol pill recently.

MRI results are back. Perfectly normal. I asked when they did the MRI if it would show her sinuses and they said yes.

Our latest doctors office called with the results. We were scheduled to come back in the morning at ten. Now they tell me wait until Monday when the West Nile test results should be back to come in.

Meanwhile, she temperature is 101 now. It has been shooting up, staying five or six hours and breaking. Last night at one AM we were still up because it was 101 and didn't break. Usually by then it is gone and she is cold and clammy.

I feel sooo frustrated and worried.

Penny

An MRI of the head would show the sinuses and show them to be clear, blocked, infected, whatever.

I would probably next go to an infectious disease doctor. There has to be something causing the temp spike. Has she had bloodwork done? Is her WBC (White Blood Cell) count normal????

I think we have to start thinking about less common stuff...tick or mosquito borne illnesses (Lyme or erlichiosis come to mind immediately, but there are a number of them), mono...things like that.

I don't know the exact symptoms but there was a child in MN that had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever-very, very unusual for our area so just something else to look into??? The child had not traveled out of state any where.

White Blood Count - normal both Mon and Wed
Hemoglobin 11.6 - about where it has run for the last three years
Blood pressure - 112 / 74
Heart Rate 112
Temp (right now) 101
Urine - OK

West Nile test results should be back by Monday

Meanwhile we are basically just sitting here until Monday. There are no decent hospitals anywhere near here and I don't know of any specialist I can cold call on Friday morning and get her seen that day.

Have you called the hospital at LSU-Shreveport? Someone at the med school may agree to see her; clinical faculty tend to be curious about mysteries.

You know, when I lived in Louisiana we used to make jokes about the rifraff you might find being treated at Big Charity and elsewhere in the LSU hospital system, but we also knew that there was no better place to go when no one could pin down what was wrong. Those folks have seen darned near everything, especially in New Orleans. IME, If there is an answer, they won't rest until they find it.

My best wishes for her recovery -- I'm absolutely a layman, but that relentless fever seems indicative of some kind of infection to me.

AWhen my DH had similar symptoms (as I posted in my previous post) a spinal tap and an infectious disease doctor was called in both times. I had to wear a mask and everything to visit him.

The not knowing is scary for sure. Y'all are still in my prayers. I know you are frustrated and concerned. Is she just laying around? Sleeping a lot? Reading, watching TV? What does she feel like besides 6 lbs. of crap in a 5 lb. bag? Fevers really take it out of you. I recently had one for 7 days. Keep her hydrated. That is so hard to do.

Hugs!!!

@ possibly ~ 3 weeks now it's probably a viral meningitis/encephalitis (? is she confused)

(if you take neg MRI and sinuses out) - bacterial meningitis would have been deadly, and a lot of the other weird things usually come with something (rash, joint pains, abnl lab results, hx of ticks, etc)..

The only way to really sort it out (with fever/ha/photophobia) would be/would have been a spinal tap and send for viral titers (arbovirus, eee, wee, sle, west nile, etc, etc).. may not be too late to do it though..

no real advice other than supportive care and get a tap soon

I am so sorry to hear your DD and your family is going through this--you have had a lot of upset in your family lately. I hope you get an answer soon---hugs to you all!

LSU Shreveport is where I will be headed with her if I don't hear something by Monday (if I make it that long). LSU is around 2 hours away but it is the closest and best available.

She is tired and pale. This week she spends most of her time laying on the sofa, and is a little bit grumpy (this is a child who has never been truly grouchy in her life). She has lost her appetite and is down by at least ten pounds. For some reason she says meat repels her.

I haven't noticed her being confused.

Thank you for the good thoughts and prayers.

Penny

Not trying to tell you what to do, but.. i honestly wouldn't wait, and I'd get her to a major medical center right now...

The body has lots of ways of compensating and putting up with things.. but the longer you go you risk more dehydration, kidney shutting down or something, less chance of figuring out exactly what it might be.. and if something "really bad" that needs to be treated possible permanent damage or something

ha/fever/photophobia for a little while probably a cold or virus maybe.. 3 weeks, not normal.

Believe me, I'm not at all satisfied with waiting. I am trying to get in touch with a physician friend who used to work at LSU Shreveport to see if he still has any contacts there. I'm just afraid they won't see her if we just walk in on a Friday with no referral and no violent symptoms like bleeding or some such.

Meanwhile we are pushing fluids on her constantly. They did check her urine yesterday and it was good. This is what is so confusing to me, the tests you would normally rely on are all fine but she is so not fine.

Penny

:hug:for you and your family, you have so much going on... I hope you find an answer and a treatment ASAP.. please keep us all posted as I know we will all be worried about your daughter..

Just another thought.

COuld it be her wisdom teeth?

I had terrible headaches and an infection withthem. They had to come out when I turned 19.

Good luck. I understand your frustrastion of wanting to know what is wrong.

Sounds EXACTLY like Lyme's disease. My bil had much the same symptoms-headache, fever, light sensitivity. Ask for the blood test.
