I've never had one thrown for me, but we did plan one for my MIL that was a great success a few years back.

Yes - my DD threw a surprise birthday party for me a number of years ago (I thought I was going to a house warming at their first new home)..

It was very nice - lots of people there - had a good time - but truth be told, I don't like "surprise" parties.. Never have.. I don't like being the center of attention.. Ironically, she feels the exact same way.. LOL..

My DH (then BF) threw me one when we were back in college on my 20th birthday. I was totally surprised, and didn't like that feeling. I wasn't prepared at all. Everyone was dressed up for an outdoor evening bonfire, and I was in beach clothes. Other than that, it ended up being a REALLY fun time!

My bridal shower was a surprise and while it was nice, I hate looking at my pictures because I looked like a slob! My mom told me we were going to a lumber yard to buy a picnic table, so I was dressed in an old T shirt and old jeans. If you're gonna throw someone a surprise party, make sure the person who is trying to get them there has them dressed appropriately! I'd rather not have a surprise party ever again!

I would be beyond mad if someone threw me a surprise party. I've let it be known to my husband.

I wouldn't want a party at all, a surprise party would throw me over the edge. :goodvibes

Yes, when I was in high school. It was a very nice surprise, however, not being IN on the surprise I wasn't prepared for the picnic, outside, in December, in Minnesota. We were out there for a while and I was FROZEN. We moved it inside though :lmao:.

I voted "another reply". Yes, I have been the honoree at a surprise party, it took all of my might to keep a fake "thanks so much" smile on my face, but if my DH ever did that to me again he would be in for it. I need a "Yes, it was awful, and if it is ever done again there will be hell to pay."

40th birthday party-bad enough alone
7 months pregnant birthday party- bad enough alone
surprise party-bad enough alone
videotaped for all to see my huge belly and sick smile-bad enough alone

all of these together are grounds for justifiably homicide or divorce.

Not for me no, I am lucky my husband remembers to get me a birthday cake. . But I had one for my husbands 25th, 30th and 40th birthday this past April.

I replied as Another reply. I had never had a surprise birthday party, let alone a party with any of my friends as we moved a lot when I was growing up. Well when birthday #17 rolled around we were finally settled somewhere and I had made lots of friends. Seems my parents still remember me lamenting about never having a party with friends so they decided to throw me a surprise party. It would have stayed a surprise had one of my friends not accidentaly have a present fall out of her locker addressed to me LOL I still acted very surprised then when the party happened.

Oh, I so agree with you. I love a party, but don't surprise me. Tell me! I'll stiil go. This happened a few years ago when I turned 40. I walked in and the band said there she is and started sining Happy Birthday, I am by NO means a shy person, but I'll be the center of attention on my own terms.

My Mom hinted over and over and over again about a party for her 80th birthday and YES we threw her a surprise party.

My DH wanted a party for his "big" one, but, since I had to have it at home, it really couldn't be a surprise.

Now me, I want ABSOLUTELY, no part of a surprise party. On my 50th birthday, I told my DH NO SURPRISE PARTY. I told him that, if he thew one, I would turn around a walk back out.

But, I couldn't guarantee that he or one of my well-meaning children wouldn't decide that I should have one. So, I booked a trip to Disney World to celebrate in peace.

My husband had a surprise 30th birthday party for me, but the surprise was on him. I came home 2 hours late from shopping.

He told me that he didn't have any plans for the day , so I took him at his word.

I really didn't like being the center of the surprise.

Surprise party for my 13th birthday. The great part was that it was at my Dad's. He never cares about birthdays. I think my aunts put him up to it.

My friends threw me one for my 30th birthday and I liked it. I think you are a spoil sport if you get mad at someone for doing something nice for you. Even if someone gets me a gift I don't like I still appreciate the thought.

My friends threw me a surprise baby shower. It was totally a surprise--I thought we we're headed to a summer bbq and was driving around trying to find two-liter bottles of soda on sale to take with me. They had invited friends from other cities who came in for the occasion....friends who didn't even know each other, but they all came together. It was touching and wonderful!

DH made me think we were going to a wedding, but he really had a limo pick us up and take us out for the evening. We went to dinner in Dallas at The Mansion on Turtle Creek and he proposed there. That was memorable enough, but.......

We then drove to Reunion Tower (you may recognize it from the opening credits of Dallas) and when we arrived, I was surprised to find out it wouldn't be just the two of us celebrating, but instead, a large group of friends! DH (to be) had arranged a surprise engagement/she accepted the proposal party. So we had a wonderful evening there, revolving over Dallas.

It was a fantastic night. :thumbsup2

That is so sweet!!!

As for myself...I've had 3 surprise parties thrown for me. One baby shower and two birthday parties. I was only actually surprised at one birthday party, and I figured it out right before I walked in the door...it was HARD to walk in, having figured it out. The other 2 I played along, but knew.

We had a surprise party for DS last year, turning 14. He had said many years that he would love to have a surprise party. It worked out do it for 14. He liked it, but he felt "duped', betrayed. I think its a natural reaction and the reason why most people don't really like them!

Can you imagine how awkward it would have been though if it turned from an engagement/she accepted the proposal party to a pity/she said no party. :lmao:

Yes, I was thrown a surprise "going away" party. I was in the Air Force and my shop threw a party at my boss' house even though it was common knowledge that I didn't like them. The cookout part was ok............but it really went downhill when the male stripper showed up. I am not kidding. He, of course, was dressed as a police officer. He handcuffed me. Not EVER having been handcuffed, I did not know that if you struggle the cuffs get WAY tight (I was 25 years old).

At that time I weighed in at a whopping 105 pounds and this guy was picking me up and flinging me around and put my legs around his waist (he was only wearing his g-string by that time). He was grinding all over me. The final straw was when he sat me down and was shoving his "stuff" in my face. I looked him dead in the eyes and told him that if he continued I would bite "it" off and spit the tiny pieces out.

I tried really hard NOT to have a meltdown. Only 1 person (my best friend) could tell how really pissed I was!

I am totally NOT a prude (which is why they thought this would be acceptable) but certain things are by INVITATION only......with whoever *I* choose.....WHEN I choose.

Gross.
