Have you ever gotten sick at Disney?

My husband had serious issues at the end of our 2012 trip.

He tripped in Epcot on Saturday night and hurt his finger. He was able to bend it, so we didn't really sweat it. It bothered him all day Sunday, but we didn't slow down, enjoying the parks and Stormalong Bay.

Monday morning, after a sleepless night, he got up and it was swollen and warm to the touch. As the day wore on, he took off his wedding ring, because the adjoining ring finger was starting to swell as well.

After lunch, he went to first aid, who suggested an ER. We went back to the Beach Club and they got him a cab.

Long story short: he had broken his finger, under the fingernail so it wasn't obvious. Then, somewhere-- we're guessing maybe the hot tub-- he picked up a staph infection. Then, to add insult to injury, he had been very bad that trip about watching his blood sugars-- he's Type 2 diabetic-- and his sugars were scary-high. They wanted to admit him.

Our flight home was the next afternoon. Oh, and as a photographer, he had a few thousands of dollars worth of camera equipment that I had no idea how to pack up.

I will say, the CMs at the Beach Club were absolutely amazing!!! They comped his cab fare to and from the ER. When he was eventually released later that night, they got his medication right up to our room. And they gave us the use of the room all day Tuesday, well beyond checkout time. Not only was he able to pack up all the camera stuff, but they gave us time to enjoy the parks one last day without sweating getting back to the room to check out or worrying about refrigerating his meds. They absolutely saved our trip!!!

We got home, he saw his doctor that day, and spent a week in the hospital.

One trip all three of my kids (an adult, a 3.5 year old and a 1 year old) spent a night/day puking - at the same time. Wasn't fun at all. Glad we were in a villa. The baby was fine the next day but the other two missed a park day. My adult dd tried going to DHS the following evening and ended up passing out.

oh ya!!!! I for some reason get them stomach bugs. last 24 hours but cant eat or drink anything. last may, we left on a Saturday, arrived late sat. afternoon, hung out sunday and sunday night I was up looking at what I ate sunday again. Monday, I had to take dd over to check in for the college program. my dd god father was with me, thank god and he did the driving while I tried to keep my cookies where they belong. we left Tuesday morning around 2am and he drove the 16 hours home.

from then on..... I became a germaphobe at wdw!!! :lmao: I don't touch anything I don't have too!!! :lmao: it seemed to work!!!!
ive had colds, flu types also. I just eat cold meds like cocktail peanuts and fight on. cant get sick in wdw!!!! :thumbsup2

I've had a case of heatstroke. :(

My sister ended up in the ER with chest pains one night. We had flown in with 2 of her kids and her husband was flying in with the 3rd child the following night. The CMs at Coronado Springs couldn't have been nicer. They let me check her in the next day for the package part of our trip, as we had added a room only night on to the beginning. They paid for taxis to and from the hospital. And they called her room a couple days in to see if they could do anything else.

After that trip I loaded a bunch of numbers into my phone, and have them listed on a card as well. Pharmacies, Med Centers, and the names of the places that will deliver meds to the room or even come see you in the room. I'm prepared just in case another medical emergency ever comes up while in Orlando.

Not Disney, but worse in a way because we may never get to go back.

I had a slight sore throat as we packed to go to family camp. It got worse and worse on the five hour drive there. By the next morning it hurt so badly I couldn't eat. I would struggle to get a bite or two of yogurt down and then quit eating. And the food is in a dining hall, which is open very limited hours and has a set menu so I couldn't just get broth to drink or Popsicles or whatever.

The camp is in the mountains and there was just a nurse with no doctor or pharmacy nearby. I couldn't sleep and the heat and lack of a/c was making that worse. And I couldn't eat. And dh was trying to take care of me, a two year old and a nine year old by himself.

We ended up driving five hours back home where I got antibiotics and started feeling better in about two days.

The truly awful part is that it was possibly our last chance to go because city residents get priority and fill the camp up and we moved out of the city. I still feel guilty about ruining that trip even though as dh points out I couldn't help it.

Thank you!!!

I would add that the ER-- I think it was, ironically enough, in the town of Celebration-- was wonderful.

On our trip in 2007 while sitting in the airport waiting to get on the plane DS then 6 says he doesn't feel good. By the next morning at breakfast it was obvious he was sick-he was not eating anything. Checked with the front desk and they gave us the information for the Urgent care center. We called and a van from the urgent care picked us up (and brought us back) no charge. DS had a bad sinus infection. Two days later I was not feeling so good either. Bad sore throat, headache and itchy/watery eye. Kept going with the help of Advil but in another day I could not even swallow any food. My throat was now totally white. Off to the Urgent care for me too. Turns out not strep they said it was probably mono and a bad case of pink eye (woke up that morning with my eye stuck shut). With both DS and I on antibiotics we both felt better in a few days. I did miss a few meals-lol. Luckily we have not had another trip like that again. I carry hand sanitizer with me all the time now.

It was 1982. I was 11 years old. We were on the monorail to Epcot and I started feeling nauseous. We made it into the park and I threw up in the bushes. We went to first aid and then they drove my mom and I back to the Poly (my dad and brothers stayed at Epcot). My mom was sooo excited to be backstage as they drove us out of the park. I felt too awful to even look out the window.

And there was that time several years before that - 1975 or 76 - when we were driving home and I threw up in the backseat all over my stuffed Minnie.

The same thing happened with our daughter on our last trip...she was 2 and it was the worst stomach bug ever!!!! She's 9 and we're finally going back and I'm paranoid someone is going to get sick again.

Thank you! :flower3:

In September 2012 we were there for 6 days... I got sick for 3 of those. Not sure if it was from a salad I ate or a stomach bug, but it was terrible. I even went to urgent care. Got $$ back from trip insurance too... My husband was a trooper bc I had the whole trip majorly planned!! So paranoid of it happening again! Ugh

Twice, both times it was food poisoning that took me out. I never get food poisoning so to get it twice in Disney really suck. Once I believe it was a resturant in the park and the other time it was a pizzaria off property. Wiped me out for a day and a half.

Our last trip three of us got sick with a stomach bug. I think it was from using a drinking fountain in the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground. DD5 was the first to get it but she was okay by the next day and we were able to go to the parks as planned. I came down with it next and I spent our last day of vacation in the hotel room feeling miserable. We had to fly home the next day and thankfully I felt well enough to travel. DD10 came down right after we arrived home. DH never caught it from us, lucky sod. This was the first time any of us have ever gotten sick and also the first time we didn't exclusively drink bottled water. It could be coincidence but lesson learned.

To people who are stating they got "food poisoning" at WDW, was this illness diagnosed by a doctor? The only way to diagnose a foodborne illness is by a stool sample. Foodborne illness and norovirus (stomach bug) have almost the exact same symptoms. Most people just associate being symptomatic with vomiting/diarrhea with the last meal they ate and think that is what got them sick, when most of the time it is the norovirus.

Hand-washing is super important at a place like Disney. When at a buffet, get your food and then wash/sanitize your hands before you eat. All those utensils that hundreds of people are touching at the chafing dishes and the door handles coming in/out of the restroom have a lot of germs. You can really lesson your chances of getting norovirus if you are careful of washing your hands before you handle food and not touching your eyes/face with unclean hands either. Also, I sanitize door handles/remotes/touchable items in the hotel room because of the possibility that a sick person was in the room before we got there. Better safe then sorry.

All of my extended family got a norovirus one trips. It was going around the parks- people puking everywhere. Nasty, but it only lasted for 24 hrs.

On our trip in 2007 while driving from Chicago to Disney World sitting in the car I said I don't feel very well my backed really hirt. By the fourth day of our vacation my back was getting worse and I also had a head cold. My DH asked the front desk and they gave us the information for the Urgent care center. Tey told me I had pneumonia and was in the Hospital for 2 day's.

We have been like 8'times and never gotten sick...until last time. I got a digestive thing and once I felt better my husband didn't get it. I actually think it s overheating and dehydration and fatigue because my daughter dint get it and she is too young to overheat, we made sure she was hydrated And she wasn't running around the parks by she was in a stroller (it was August). Next trip I will take all these things into consideration but I am also starting an Emergen-c and probiotic regimen at least a week in advance and for the entire time we are there, because it can't hurt and it might help :)

Several years ago we were delayed at the airport. As I was helping my older daughter find something in my bag, I looked at my youngest dd, who was 2 at the time. She was licking the railing, IN THE AIRPORT!!! I know everyone in that airport heard me scream, I was sooooo grossed out!! Until she got sick, she never showed signs of being sick so we just went with our plans. But, sure enough about two or three days later, we were in the pool at the Boardwalk and I could tell she was about the throw-up. My DH and I managed to jump out of the pool and almost get her to the bathroom. We did not make it off the pool deck though before she threw-up. It was awful.....The next day my DH got sick, then that evening my other daughter and then me. My son did not get that, but ended up with strep a few days days later. Thankfully it was longer trip, so we did have several days when everyone felt fine. I think that someone always gets a head cold during a trip, but that stomach bug crap was the worst!!
