Have you ever boycotted a product due to a moral issue?

No kidding. I wish his mothership would just come and take him away already!

That was too funny :rotfl2: He really is out there :earseek:

My favorite food in the world is CVS brand Gummie Bears BUT I have had way too many issues in that store to ever step foot in there again. They treated me like crap after a huge screw up on their part. I drive 15 minutes away to Target to get my prescription filled instead of walking the 10 minutes (with the price of gas...). :cool1:

My mom has bought the gummie bears for me on occasion and I eat them because they are so amazing  . But I would never go in there again.

I admire you all for sticking by your convictions. Yes, it's just a tiny drop in the very large bucket but it's something.

I boycott places where I'm not treated fairly - for instance, I won't go to Friendly's anymore since they must go out of their way to hire the world's worst workers. WalMart is awful, I don't give my money to them.

Back in the early 90's Japanese leaders called all American workers lazy and illiterate and said that we could never produce quality cars. Like all of you that are going out to buy American Girl dolls, I went out and bought a brand new American-made car. It was a gut reaction.

I don't eat veal.
I don't support Abercrombie & Fitch or Hollister because of their policies and their crappy clothes.
I no longer attend my Catholic Church.

Do you think I can hold a grudge???? :)

For those interested in using products not tested on animals, check out Lush (UK - Lush.co.uk or USA - Lush.com). It's not cheap, but their stuff is awesome!

For the diamond thing - you might want to avoid gold too. I'll only buy Welsh gold as I know we don't have that kind of 'slave labour' here.

I try to make an effort to avoid things like products tested on animals and stuff (there is just no justification for it in the cosmetic industry - pharamceutical is more debatable - and don't get me started on fashion fur!), but in the Western world the chances are that most things we buy involve some kind of cruelty to someone somewhere along the line. Think of all the clothes we have for a start - it's not only Nike that uses sweatshops.

While I don't boycott them, I try to find everything I'm looking for in another store and only buy at Walmart when I can't find it elsewhere. I certainly won't hurt myself to do an all out boycott, that would be silly. It's been a long time however since I've purchased anything there.

I do the same. I am probably not even going to go into a Walmart this holiday season.

Many cosmetic companies use the foreskin of helpless baby boys to make their face cream- including AVON, Mary Kay. I do not use their products.

Any source or proof for this?

This sounds rather improbable, but lets assume you are correct; So are you implying that the cosmetic companies kidnap these infants for the purpose of circumcision rather than their parents making that decision based on their culture, personal or hygenic beliefs? Having witnessed my DSs circs and other babies' circs, I can't even recall a specimen big enough to send to the pathology lab.

They'd have to be getting a very high amount of foreskin - Avon is an international company.

In third grade I boycotted Coke because someone told me it had cocaine in it. I drank Sprite instead. I showed them.

actually, in its original formula, it did have cocaine in it, hence - 'coca'cola

it depends.. i am/will boycott A and F, and some other stores based on their ads, actions.

Just reading about the potential American Girl doll boycott makes me curious. Have you ever boycotted a product or company because of some moral issue? Proctor and Gamble? Disney? I never had personally, but I know a few people who are quite adament about that type of thing.

When I was a kid my parents wouldn't watch Jane Fonda movies and I couldn't understand what the big deal was. Fast forward and now I won't watch Woodie Allen movies for moral reasons! LOL. The child becomes the parent!

As a family we don't watch Tom Cruise or John Travolta as first runs due to strong held beliefs of my DH. He *is* ok with me Netflixing them though.

When I was in college I had a girlfriend from NYC who boycotted Nestle's due to their WHO violations. It wasn't until 20years later when I had my first child that I finally _got_ that one. I don't boycotte them but I do try to educate folks periodically.

As far as the American Doll thing.. never heard about it but from reading the article I am considering buying my daughter one for Christmas :)

Guess it's true "there's no such thing as bad press" *grin*

I also don't eat Veal and do not support some Charities due to the fact that many of the 'Executives' in the ranks earn more than six figures annually.
I am curious why no Diamonds too?

Diamonds.. I think it's got to do with the South African blood diamonds. Then again, maybe I just watch Law and Order too much!

I made an error- the foreskins aren't used IN creams, the creams are tested on foreskins-tht'as one way they tout "cruelty-free testing". It makes circumcision a profitable business. Also, in order for the foreskin to be tested on, it cannot contain any anesthetic. Which means a baby was cut on for 10 minutes without pain relief.

They take foreskin, use some of the cells to grow new "skin" in a petri dish or whatever, and then test the products on the new "skin". So, perhaps MK is says that they don't test on foreskins because they aren't technically testing *on* the actual foreskin, but on skin derived from foreskin cells. However, if someone were to ask if the skin was derived from foreskin cells, then they should answer "yes" correct? So you don't need a ton of foreskin to make a ton of cells to test on.

Several companies are pursuing skin replacement, both for in vitro
toxicology testing and, farther down the line, as graft material for burn
patients. The human cells in the Skin2 Dermal Model, from the La Jolla,
Calif.-based Marrow-Tech Inc., come from the dermis of a newborn's foreskin
tissue discarded after circumcision, seeded onto inert medical-grade nylon
mesh. Here, the cells divide and metabolize, secreting a collagen matrix
and growth factors, as they normally would. The Skin2 "Full-Thickness"
model caps the dermis with an epidermis. The company's next product will be
a stratum corneum (skin surface) model, which mimics the lipid barrier
function of skin and is expected to be useful for evaluating penetration of
skin-care products.

Organogenesis Inc. of Cambridge, Mass., uses a variation on the foreskin
theme for its Testskin by seeding human foreskin tissue into a bovine
collagen gel. Nutrients are added, the cells secrete collagen and growth
factors, and an epidermal layer is placed on top. Manufacturers now using
Testskin include Est'e Lauder Inc., Mary Kay Cosmetics Inc., Avon Products
Inc., and Amway Corp. Next from Organogenesis will be a skin model
containing pigment-producing melanocytes useful for testing sunscreens and
makeup for dark-complexioned people, says John Burger, director of investor
relations for the company.

Here's some info on Testskin
Quote:
TESTSKIN II is a living skin equivalent model that is comprised of fibroblasts and keratinocytes (derived from human neonatal foreskin)

Here's a quote from Discover Magazine from 1991.
Quote:
“Organogenesis, a biotech firm in Massachusetts, has come up with a safe and cruelty-free alternative for these tests [cosmetic tests on animals]: a lab-grown piece of human skin... Testskin is already being used by laboratories at Helene Curtis, Estee Lauder, and Mary Kay Cosmetics.”
Discover Magazine, August, 1991

So Testskin is made from foreskins and apparently MaryKay has used it in the past. Not sure if they still do.

I know this is small potatoes in the grand scheme, but I refuse to buy another "Dixie chicks" CD or concert ticket for the rest of my life. Granted, i'm just one person, but considering i've seen them a few times and bought a few CD's that's still a few hundred bucks.

I think what they did (everyone remembers this, right????) was unforgivable and will not give them one more cent of my hard earned money.

I do, however, think Natalie's husband is adorable (Adrian Pasdar - he's Carlos' lawyer on Desperate Housewives).

Tinijocaro; that is SO COOL!! Gee, I might just start wearing makeup so I can support these companies! Seriously, how could this bother you? Even if your against circumsion for your son, do you really think you have the right to stick your big fat opinion in someone elses familial, medical, and/or religious beliefs? Circumsion is painful I'm sure, but no more painful than getting a baby girls ears peirced, and it does actually have some validity (unlike infant ear peircing, which I think is twisted, sick and cruel beyond belief). My great grandfather developed penile cancer because he was not circumcised. This is a medically proven fact, though you usually have to live 90 or so years for it to happen. So not a big worry for most people. We are generally a long lived bunch though,so please keep your opinions off our rights to do what we will with our bodies(geee that sounds familiar) .Also the rights of burn victims and those born with deformities, who've had cancers removed etc. that would truely benefit from this MIRACLE of science. Oh, and if they are growing these foreskins in labs now, then they can just mass produce them from stock on hand. It's not like they are roving third world countries snipping themselves a bloody harvest of tiny little bitty bits, forever mangaling the family jewels of these great yet downtrodden peoples who have so much to teach us about leaving with the land, unlike our greedy, selfish capitilist pig culture yada, yada, yada.Get a grip.

Make that 2 people!

Spoon Full of Bitterness -not just a wee bit defensive about your choice to circumcise are you? I'm not here to debate, just answered the OP's question. No need to get your undies in a ruffle.

A couple points, though, since YOU brought it up. Your *****l tissue would serve the same purpose that a foreskin would- same tissue- for all the burn victims.

"so please keep your opinions off our rights to do what we will with our bodies" It's not YOUR body I'm opposed to cosmetic surgery on. Do what you want with your own body. It's babies who don't get a choice in what happens to THEIR body. It's not about you.

No, they don't "grow" foreskins in labs. Not sure where you got that from. They culture the cells.

A nice glass of wine might help you calm yourself a bit. No need to be so nasty, just because you disagree with me.

Just thought I would throw in........it is NOT ten minutes of cutting to perform a circumcision!
