Have you ever boycotted a product due to a moral issue?

I am a huge Dixie Chicks fan, and am happy to buy two or three copies of their CDs to make up for anyone refusing to buy them. Exercising one's right to free speech is not only forgivable in my book, it's downright laudable.

As for foreskins - the information provided by Tinijocaro would not have influenced by decision either way. I chose to have my son circumcised for my own reasons, none of which involved what I thought might happen to the foreskin afterward.

Just thought I would throw in........it is NOT ten minutes of cutting to perform a circumcision!

Depends on the method and the doctor, but you're right, the actual cutting is just a small part of the procedure.

"The first stage of circumcision is to grasp
the foreskin with forceps, and widen the opening. The foreskin is normally attached to the glans by a membrane called the synechia.
The glans and inner lining of the foreskin are still developing in the young child.
During circumcision, the synechia must be torn apart.

The foreskin is clamped. A slit is made in the dorsal side of the foreskin.

The slit is separated and the foreskin is laid back, exposing the glans.

A PlastiBell of appropriate size is slipped over the glans, and the foreskin is laid over it.

A ligature is tied in the ridge of the bell, as tightly as possible around the foreskin.
Oozing will occur if the ligature is loose.

After one or two minutes to allow for crush, the foreskin is sliced off at the distal edge of the ligature using a knife or scissors. The surgeon trims as much tissue as possible to reduce the amount of necrotic tissue and the possibility of infection. The handle of the bell is snapped off at this time."

This is the plastibell procedure- I know there are other methods, but all involve tearing the synechia apart, cutting and clamping the foreskin, and , cutting off the foreskin. Some methods take longer than others.

I boycotted (and still do) Exxon, due to the Valdez incident. They were using a single hulled vessel to transport crude, 10 years after federal regulations required double hulled ships.

I also don't eat veal, after living in an area where you saw the calves hobbled or in the little white confines on a regular basis. DH can have all he wants, I won't.

actually, in its original formula, it did have cocaine in it, hence - 'coca'cola

Well unless the poster was drinking coca-cola before 1902, she was probably safe from ingesting cocaine: http://www.snopes.com/cokelore/cocaine.asp

"But before you're tempted to run off claiming Coca-Cola turned generations of drinkers into dope addicts, consider the following: back in 1885 it was far from uncommon to use cocaine in patent medicines (which is what Coca-Cola was originally marketed as) and other medical potions. When it first became general knowledge that cocaine could be harmful, the backroom chemists who comprised Coca-Cola at the time (long before it became the huge company we now know) did everything they could with the technology they had available at the time to remove every trace of cocaine from the beverage. What was left behind (until the technology improved enough for it all to be removed) wasn't enough to give a fly a buzz. "

i know, thats why i said
in its original formula
It was marketed for use against headaches, because of the cocaine in it. ( yes, i know i watch WAY to much discovery channel.....)

I will not patronize Domino's Pizza because they fund anti-choice groups. I saw the founder and CEO on tv and learned more about him and I was really turned off. Being Catholic is good and fine but he's too extreme for me. Besides, I think their pizza is lousy.

I won't see Mel Gibson films because of the way he acted when Passion of the Christ came out.

Walmart- I have a big problem with a lot of their policies, and their 'higher than thou' attitude of the company. I also don't care for the kind of people that go there, and I don't think their prices are all that great.

I won't eat swordfish. Not only is it high in mercury, but also their trolling methods kill sea turtles and other endangered sea wild life.

I won't watch anything with Tom Cruise in it since he made that jerk comment to Brooke Shields about her postpartum depression. I think he's a big phony these days.

As a rule, I try not to shop at Walmart, as I hate their customer service policies.

Absolutely. I have boycotted several companies. I don't go looking for the info but when I do find out something that I don't like I stay away.

Ok, I wouldnt say I boycotted a product. I do boycotted Ringling Bros Circus. After I saw a news special on how they treat their animals, I refused to ever give them one more cent. The last time I saw their circus was about 9 yrs ago, and I refuse to take my kids there.

Not us personally, but several years ago DW was heavily involved with The Pampered Chef. When they were purchased by one of Warren Buffet's conglomerates, many many people refused to host parties, and many consultants walked away from $50 - $70K/yr businesses that they spent years building.

Nutty.

I try and boycott anything that supports Mumia Abu Jamal (though that has become difficult in recent years, as there are so many companies and celebrities who do support him)-- I grew up with members of the family of the police officer he murdered (and my dad was a Philly cop).

I boycott Walmart (though my mom took me there once, and I succumbed to the prices, I felt really guilty about it, and won't do it again), because of their business practices, and they're non union (from what I understand they're employees cannot get medical insurance)-- we're a union family, my husband is a member of IBEW.

I was just recently told to boycott Domino's but that's a union issue.

I boycott Stone Cold Creamery (union issue)

I think that's it-- at least that's all I can think of right now.

I do not eat veal (much to the chagrin of my Italian in-laws).
My family does not go to circuses.
I try to buy "American" whenever possible.

It's amazing how Mumia Abu Jamal has been made into a "hero".

I like Walmart. While they have been criticized for their business model, "driving small businesses out of the area", etc, a study has shown that the lower pricing has a net positive impact on shoppers and for the community.

Wal-Mart. Mostly because their stores around here are horrific. But some of it is that I don't care for many of their business practices.

Diamonds.. I think it's got to do with the South African blood diamonds. Then again, maybe I just watch Law and Order too much!

Actually more Western Africa, but South Africa as well.

I just want to clarify--most of the people who have supported Mumia do not condone any illegal actions he may have taken, they simply feel that his right to a fair trial was violated and that he should be able to be retried and possibly resentenced under the protection of the laws of the US Constitution and applicable PA state law.

Won't order from Dominos, for the stated reasons.

Talked DW out of going to Curves, for the same reason (and their founder makes the guy that founded Dominos look like a saint).

Won't eat veal.

Will be buying an American Girl Doll for DD for Christmas. :teeth:

Will be buying the next Dixie Chicks album, because they make some beautiful music. Could care less about their political affiliations (though I happen to agree with them).

Will happily enjoy reduced audiences at Tom Cruise films, since if I cared about actors religious beliefs I probably wouldn't see many movies.

Not sure if this counts but I avoid all SASSY baby products because my daughter nearly choked to death on a fault baby book and they refused to take any blame or look into recalling the book. It was a soft cloth book called the Baby Bug Book. On one page was what was to look like grass but it was green felt. I put my daughter to bed in her playpen in my room when she was 13 months old. I went in to take a shower and she was choking on a piece of the felt that she was EASILY able to pull off the book. After many calls to SASSY they refused to take blame or anything. They sent us a new copy of the book, this time the grass was cloth so they KNEW there was a problem. But I looked in the stores and the old book was still being sold by the tons. They refused to take the books off the shelf. So I went to the news, they did a whole news story and everything. Nothing ever happened from it, so I refuse to buy anything SASSY.
