DH and I dream of taking off w. the kids to a very far away country and stay there for approx. 6 months. DH can work from just about anywhere if there is internet and I´m a teacher w. the option to take one semester off without loosing my job.
Have any of you ever done this? How did you start planning, where did you go? Did you have kids with you?

No never have done this. Just how old are the children and would they benefit or remember this. Those are the questions I would be asking myself first. To me, everything needs to be done when it makes sense and the children will be able to learn and enjoy the experience.

Havent done that...but we did relocate with DHs job and lived in Doha Qatar for 5 1/2 years :goodvibes It was fantastic! We did a lot of vacationing in that time, my kids learned a lot.

Housing for 6 months could be expensive, depending on where you go.

I think it would be great fun!

I haven't, but I think it's a great idea. I'd love to do something like that!

I think it sounds like a great experience. If I remember correctly, you won a year's worth of hotel stays in the Radisson Blu contest. Are you planning to stay with them for the 6 months?

If your work is not affected by it, I say GO! How often in life will your children get this opportunity again?

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it, but must say that I view this very differently. I believe that children and the family as whole, can benefit greatly from travels even when done when the children are too young to remember them later in life. My kids are 3, 6, 9, 15 and 17 and they have traveled quite extensively so far.

Sounds great. I lived in Kuwait as a kid while my dad was working there. I´ve lived in 4 countries so far, and my kids "only" in two. Would love for them and all of us to experience local life in more places.

Yes, we did win and have had some really fun trips so far and will go on a month long trip this summer using the amazing prize we won. However, we would prefer staying in an apartment/house somewhere very local, if we would go somewhere for 6 months. I can not imagine staying in hotel rooms for so long ;)

I have not done this but have also thought about this idea recently. My husband works for laptop and I am a teacher. We were thinking of going during the summer, from June 1 to August 15 just to see how my 4(4,6,10,12) would do on an extended trip. I believe they can learn from living in different places.

There´s no doubt in my mind that children learn a lot from living (and even just visiting) different places.

We just moved to Australia from the US for my husbands job and it has been wonderful so far. I was worried because my kids are 16 and 14 but they have loved it and asked why we didn't do this when they were younger. Currently they are going to an International School and they are amazed at all the different places that some of the other students have lived. Good luck with what ever you decide. Life is an adventure - enjoy it:)

How wonderful! Glad your kids are enjoying it so much. Where in Australia are you?

We are in Perth, Western Australia. It is absolutely beautiful here:)

I can imagine. I would love to travel in Australia. My best friend has traveled throughout Australia and visited very many places there. She LOVED it and her photos were amazing.
