Our local schools just opened back up this week. My DD just told me that my nephew who is a 9th grader took a true/false test his 1st day this week and made a 90 on a 10 question test. He is a very bright student, on the A honor roll much of his school days so far.

This is where I have a problem. The question he missed was Did Humans Evolve From Apes? He answered false. He got it marked wrong along with a good friend of his. Im proud of him that he stood by his answer and didnt waver.

What kind of junk are they teaching our kids if that is in the first days activities? And we live in the Bible belt of NC.

I want argue the point of Evolution vs Creationism. I know what Gods Word tells me and what truth my heart holds.

We homeschool our kids. My DD age 11 made the comment afterwards, and I qoute "Man Im glad we arent in public school anymore. Its a good thing we have churches or everybody would fall for that stuff."

Out of the mouths of babes!

tell the teacher God created you but she come from an ape

In the real world, if you're in science class you have to give the scientific answer, not the religious answer. If you can't accept that, it's better that you're homeschooling.

THREE CHEERS for the public schools!!!!:jester: :wave2:
I am so glad to see that they are teaching the truth, and this is from someone who DOES believe in God, just not the 7 days and 7 nights crap.::yes::

I have a sincere question for you. As an intelligent, 21st century person, how do you explain all the evolutionary evidence and fossil records?

I am a religious person, I firmly believe in God, but I do not take the Bible literally. Since the vast majority of the Bible was written decades if not hundreds of years after the fact, it is hard to take each and every story and parable as the "truth". Instead, I use the Bible as a guide in how I conduct myself and treat others.

Our social studies teacher spent the whole day one year explaining that we were going to take the evolution of man from a scientific stand point, not that that takes away from anything that you believe, this is just the view that they teach because they aren't allowed to teach religion, and doesn't mean that either way is right or wrong.

The Catholic private school that we were considering for our older DS teaches both theories to their students. IMHO, and for my own children, I think it's important that they learn and know about both.

Look around at some of the political threads ;)

I would be upset also if my child was marked wrong for this answer because the question should have never been on the test in the first place.

I have no problem with schools teaching Darwins theory because it is a part of science. But I do have a problem w/ schools condemning a child w/ a bad grade because the child doesn't believe in Darwins theory due to them having religious beliefs.

I'm proud of your nephew also (and I don't even know him)because it takes a big person to stand by what they believe. Good for him, and how sad that a school put a child on the spot with this type of question.

jimmytammy-I agree with you. Kudos to your nephew and DD!

To follow the evolution theory, you have to believe they humans have evolved from a "primordial soup", after all the apes didn't just appear did they? The human body is far too complicated to have evolved from "goo" without some divine intervention. Just my 2 cents!

Not all Christians take the Bible literally, first of all. Those that do should seriously consider researching it with archeological facts, the earliest manuscripts, and the context of the day in which it was written.

Secondly, just because ONE science teacher teaches the theory to be fact does NOT condemn all public schools and all science teachers.

Thirdly, I think its important to introduce children, esp those that old, to ALL theories and beliefs, and let them choose what to belief and what not to believe. It's important for a teenagers faith development to be faced with such discrepencies and be able to work them out. I think anyone that protects their child from such things are doing them a GREAT disservice and setting them up for lots of tossing and turning late at night when they are encountered with it. And they will be. It may just be when they're out of your home and out of your influence.

I don't feel that such a question should be counted wrong on a quiz on the first day of class, and I would have worded it differently, in order to acknowledge that the evolution theory is a strong possibility, but I would not have placed it as fact on a quiz like that. As a parent, I would not be raising a stink that it's being taught, but rather that on the first day of school, some children have never been exposed to it and it's not appropriate to count such things wrong so early into the year. Make sense? So I don't agree with the teacher's decision, but I also don't agree with your response to it.

=)

Isn't it the "Theory of Evolution"? Since when is it taught as fact?

ITA.

evolution doesn't say that there wasn't divine intervention, just that there was goo. ;)

my personal belief is that older children/young adults should be presented with competing theories, research it themselves, and then make a decision for themselves. religious belief is a lot stronger and more meaningful this way as opposed to just spitting back the words that someone told you were the "right" ones. JMHO. :)

I don't belong to any religion. I'm an athiest. First let me say I wholeheartedly support the rights of the child involved and his parents to believe what they choose. I even support the rights of the child to declare his beliefs in a public school. However, the creationist theory has no business being taught in a public school. It is mainly a religous theory and these days there is *supposed* to be a seperation of church and state. By teaching a theory subscribed to by only some religions that seperation is violated. Granted, the evolution theory is flawed but it's a generally accepted scientific theory. I assume this was in a science class. The teacher should be able to include other theories as well such as creationism but when it comes to testing, the child is being tested on retention of the information taught in the class. It's a tough call even for me. If you believe in the theory of creationism then you should stand up for that. You should also be prepared for the possibility that someone else will disagree with you. That's the beauty of this country, you don't have to believe what you are taught. I can't really say who I think was right in this situation. I believe in the theory the theory of evolution but I also realize the child feels his answer was the correct one. You just have to teach your children what you believe to be right and hope that they can stand up for their convictions while allowing others to hold to their own beliefs.

Ok, flame away if you must but I don't plan to debate this. I know this is a mainly christian board. I support your right to practice your religion so I hope you'll support my right not to have one.

A very well said statement, slo.

She should've just worded the question-

According to the Theory of Evolution did humans evolve from apes?

Thank you very much for reminding me of why I have my son in a private school. I was considering a switch in high school, but I better save for that private high school education.

I went to catholic schools all my life and I can't recall ever once where I was forced to accept one theory over the other. In fact, I recall discussing the differences in the two theories as part of our philosophy class.

However, I do think the question was too simplistic and vague. I don't see it as wrong and I don't see it as right. To me, they are still both theories that haven't been proven right or wrong.
