The picture posted in my signature was taken the moring of January 25th - the day he was deployed. It's not often I get all seven kids together, but on this day, even the college athlete got permission to miss a weekend of practice and come home to see her brother off. I will treasure this photo forever! I had a wallet size of this picture made and put into a small frame that I found at Radio Shack. The frame has a microchip and you can record a 10 second message that can be played over and over. So, he now has that little frame (and our voices) with him at all times.

He told us in his last phone call (on Sunday) that he keeps the little frame in his desert cammie pocket at ALL TIMES. :D

At least I know there's a little bit of Indiana with him every minute of every day. ;)

That is a great idea and I am sure your DS treasures it. It will probably get him through many tough times.

Tell him we are all so proud of him and continue praying for all of our military.

God Bless

Melinda

On Good Morning America this morning they were asking some soldiers about what kind ofgood luck charms they carried with them. It was cute to see what some of them carried in their pockets. Everything from a plastic spoon to a silver cross and a leather pouch. Everything had a story behind it.

I think its very generous of you to share your "soldier". Last Sunday,at family dinner,I shared what I knew about him. My friend's dad, who served in WWII in Italy, got very emotional. He wanted to know all about your son. How old was he,where was home? He wanted to know how I knew him if he came from Indiana? Patty, this was the hard part, trying to explain the internet is one thing, but forgetabout tryin' to explain the Dis!!!
When it was time to go home,he gave me a check and said "make sure to send a package from me,an old soldier to a young soldier, but always a soldier".

hang in there!

OK...that did it for me. The tears are flowing down my cheeks...my coworkers must think I've lost it! ;)

Thank you for sharing so much of your personal story with us. You have helped me see inside the lives of the people protecting me and my family. You've put a face on the word "soldier" for me...and it has made such a difference. Thank You.

God Bless your son...and his wonderful family.

No....now you guys are making me cry!!!!:(

What a great picture, Patty! A real treasure!! Blessings to your son.

OK--so I was a little choked up with Patty's post. OK, I can deal. But then...Miss Airhead...wow that did it for me too. What a great guy that 'old' soldier is. Next time you see him, give him a hug from me please. It's amazing.

What a treasure for your son. A little bit of home is with him 24 hours a day. What a creative idea that was.

Just wanted you(especially Patty) to see how much people
care about someone they don't even know! Pete(that's my friend's dad gets real emotional whenever we talk about war.
He was only 20yrs old and said that the packages he got from home kept him going.
He called last night(something he NEVER does) to see if I sent the care package to "the boy". He's going to make a list for me as to what a soldier needs. I asked him if he'd like to write a letter but he said he couldn't because he gets too upset. This man just turned 82 and talking about war still makes him cry.
