Please advise.

We get our points in February. I plan to go ahead and "borrow" against next year for a short trip in February. Now, this is where I need the help. I want to sell my remaining points and use that money for our trip because we won't be able to go back in 2006. How do I do this? In the past, I physically had the points to transfer to another member and they called about 2 days later and MS confirmed the points had been moved, but because I don't get the points until February, how can I do this so I know I'll get the money in time for the trip and that the person will definitely know they are getting the points?

Thanks tons - Dianedisney :earseek:

As I understand it if you sell all reservations in your name are cancelled, but maybe you are just "renting" the points. In that case when you "get" the points won't matter. It will work like it did before. You may be borrowing from 2006 into this year which might make a difference to the renter. (I am not sure there)

Are you specifically asking about transferring points only? If so, you could advertise sometime in January that you have them to rent but they won't be available until February 1st. At that point, you could have the transaction done in the first couple of days.

Now if you are willing to rent out a reservation, then you could do that now. You could offer up your points to book a reservation in their name now and work out the payment details.

You can't just "sell some of your points". All sales have to be for complete contracts. That is why some folks suggest having two smaller contracts is better than a large one. If you are only talking about extra points for one year, why not bank them?

Now that I reread your post, I think you are really talking about renting out points. Just do the same as you did when you did a transfer. Again, why not bank them?

Sorry I wasn't specific enough. I am talking about renting our remainder of points. Financially, it would be better for us to rent the points and use that money for our trip. We may change our mind and rent only 1/2 of our remaining points, but we'll have to see.

I like the idea of specifically saying that they are available February 1st - thanks for the advice.

If anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know. All are appreciated!

Diane

You can state that they are available after Feb 1 but that may not allow you enough time to receive payment for your rented points in time to use the $$$ for your trip. If you move the points (borrow) to your Feb 05 use year, they are permenently moved to that year. In that case, I would use them quickly (borrow them and rent them in the next couple of months)so that you have time to make the reservation and get payment and still have time to "reuse" the points if anything goes wrong. Make sure that the pople who rent from you know that this ais a final transaction and a nonrefundable deposit. Just about every time the rentersfollow through but it is a good idea to give youself time to get the transaction completed.

You can always bank the points but it it a good idea to rent the points and have the $$ to have an extra special trip too.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do here, but I think you may be confusing making reservations with use year.

If you have a Feb use year, and are taking a vacation in Feb 2006, you can use points which you receive on Feb 1, 2006 for that trip. You would not be borrowing points, unless you had already borrowed ALL of your 2006 points into 2005...in which case you would be borrowing 2007 points.

Just because you make a reservation in one use year for a time period in the next use year does NOT mean you need to borrow points. You only borrow points when you do not have enough points available in the use year of the trip to cover the whole trip.

If you rent out a reservation for a trip that occurs in your 2006 use year, and you do not have enough points in that use year, you would need to borrow from your 2007 use year AT THE TIME THE RESERVATION IS MADE. You can always advertise renting points and state that it could only be for trips starting after Feb. 1st, but in most rental cases, you would get paid as soon as you make the ressie for your renters, or at least a partial payment by then. Just be aware that a reservation rented out with borrowed points could put you at risk of losing those points if the reservation is canceled within 30 days of the reservation. There is no way to put those points back into their original use year.
