I know there are a lot of Mac aficionados here so I figured it would be a good place to post.

Earlier today, we set up our brand new 21.5" iMac. It is gorgeous and the screen is huge (can't imagine using the 27"). I've just started the process of moving files from our old iMac and discovered that the new one doesn't come with any equivalent of AppleWorks. Is that correct or am I just missing it somewhere? I can't believe they would ship a computer today with no word processor at least.

I definitely need to get software for word processing, a draw program, spreadsheet, etc. as all 3 of us use those things all the time.

Your new iMac should have the iWork suite installed.

The word processor is now called Pages. The spreadsheet program is called Numbers. Keynote is the Mac presentation software.

Enjoy your new iMac!

IWorks is not included. You have to purchase it as an add on.
It runs around $70 I think, but I am very pleased with it.

Guess I'll have to check when I get home but I don't recall seeing iWorks. Is it fully compatible with documents created in AppleWorks? I certainly hope so. The old iMac still works and we still will use it as a secondary computer in the house but I'd like to migrate over the files that we work with regularly.

Steve,

I am a recent Apple convert. I have purchased a Macbook Pro and IMac for work. We have an IMac in our home. I had to add IWorks to each of them. You can get it pre-installed, but you have to pay for it separately.

I am not sure about Appleworks. I do know that it is compatible with Word documents. You can even save a document as a Word document.

Hope it works easily!

I recently switched back-to-Mac with my new Mini. You can download a free trial of iWork from Apple to make sure that it works for you. Also, it looks like you can get iWork for $38 from Amazon

I use OpenOffice - it is free shareware. You can download it from openoffice.org and it should open any Mac or PC file types - I can transfer Excel docs from work to open at will by "saving as..." to convert them to whichever I need next, if necessary.

You can also do a lot on Google Documents now.

OpenOffice is awesome. I used MS Office for Mac on my last iMac and switched to OpenOffice on my new iMac and I think it ROCKS! Best part is that it is free. Give it a try!

And they are always updating it to new versions and guess what - those udpates are free, too! :thumbsup2

When I bought my new iMac the Applestore told me I would need new iWorks and a new version. But they transfered everthing from my old eMac and my Appleworks 6 works just fine. I also still use Quicken 2005 (I only use it as a checkbook register) , but did purchase 2007, becase I was told my older version would not work - it works fine. They transfered everything to my new iMac and when I turned it on I still has my picture of Poly as my desktop.:)

I ended up getting MS Office for Mac. Probably should have just downloaded Openoffice.

I do have the 27" Imac and yes the screen is huge !

The 21.5 is quite large enough. Considering that our family room TV is 27" I can't fathom needing a computer monitor that large. I really didn't want the 21.5" but it only comes in 2 sizes. I would have been quite happy with a 17". We actually considered replacing our iMac with a MacBook but decided we preferred a desktop as our main computer.

I'm not sure if it would be an option for you - but look at Google Docs?

I just got a 13" MacBook Pro. It replaces an aging 15" MacBook Pro. I splurged and got it with a small SSD (solid state drive) and the boot time is incredibly fast - something under 15 seconds. Hope you enjoy your new Mac!
